Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep he r head above wate r . One of the major
headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building . It was a six - story building . On
each floor , hallways stretched in four directions , leading to classrooms , laboratories , and teachers '
offices . Somewhere in the building , there was also a library , a cafeteria , and a gym .
Having a poo r sens e o f direction , Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building .
All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about , let alone commit to memory . She
decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place
didn’t exist .
In her fast P . E . class , Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one
mile around the track outside . She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic . There was
nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile . To Eva ," a mile " was used to describe
long distances . It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather ' s , and that always seemed like a
long way , even in a car !
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust . However ,
while some of her classmates edged ahead , others actually fell behind ." It ' s just the beginning ," she
thought ." I ' ll come in last for sure ."
Soon Eva began to breathe hard , with her heart pounding and legs shaking . Feeling desperate , Eva
started using a mind trick o n herself . She stopped thinking about the word " mile ." Instead , she
focused on reaching the shadow east on the track by an oak tree up ahead . Then she concentrated on
jogging to the spot where the track curved (弯). After that , she tried to see if she could complete her
first lap . One lap turned into two , then three , then four .注意:

Last summer,Hilda worked as a volunteer with dolphin trainers at a sea life park. Her job was to make sure the
tanks were free of any items so that the trainers could train the dolphins to fetch specific items. However, one day
after cleaning, one of the dolphins,Maya, presented Hilda with a candy wrapper from the tank. When Katherine, the
trainer, saw this, she blamed Hilda for her carelessness.Upset but not discouraged by this event,Hilda decided to do
some spying on Maya.
The next morning,Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear (水下呼吸器) and jumped into the
tank for her usual, underwater sweep.Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to see
Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday,Hilda knew what she was doing. She watched
as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn't surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and
swam to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box
and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there? Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and
swam over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered. Hilda then swam across the tank
following Maya’s path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turnedaround, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb (梳子) in her mouth waiting
for her treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish. “I know
where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting
place. “What’s all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.

“Mom, I’m ready to go,” called Jason.
Every Saturday, Jason looked forward to going to Chinatown to shop for food because his mom let him pick
his favorite snacks: roast pork buns and bubble tea.
The streets in Chinatown were crowded with cars and pedestrians. His mother could not find the same exotic
vegetables in the local supermarkets, so they always came here to shop. What fascinated Jason was tasty roast pork,
even the whole pigs hanging on big hooks in the windows, their skins roasted to a glistening brown. Jason’s mouth
would water just looking at them.
As they passed the newsstand carrying Chinese newspapers and magazines, Jason spotted an old man sitting
on the sidewalk. His hair was long, white, and messy. The face beneath was lined, dirty, and unshaven. Frayed and
torn clothing wrapped around his thin frame, and in this kind of cold weather, he even wore sandals, his feet blue
with cold. He banged an empty can against the sidewalk. As Jason walked by, he could smell a musty odor andpinched his nostrils together. The old man reached out and touched Jason’s left leg. Instinctively, Jason gathered all
his strength to jerk(猛拉) his leg away and kick the old man’s hand heavily. Frightened, he hurried to catch up with
his mother without looking back.
“Mom, the old man touched me,” he cried, “He touched me with his dirty hands. It’s disgusting! And he
smelled too.”
Jason’s mother glanced back at the man with a look of understanding and said gently, “Jason, he can’t help it.
He’s homeless. He didn’t mean any harm.”
Mom’s words made Jason look back at the old man with regret, who now was looking up at other passersby,
still banging his can.
On their way home, Jason asked, his voice filled with concern. “Why is that old man homeless? Where does
he sleep?”
“I don’t know. It’s tough to be homeless, especially in this cold weather. He did look quite weak,” his mother
replied.
Mom’s words made Jason’s regret deepened. He confessed his heavy kick to his mother, who reminded him
that it was crucial to acknowledge his mistake and try to make up for it.

What does it mean to be a hero? I think a hero is someone who goes out of his way to make others happy. My
hero is Mr. Wright, my chorus(合唱队) teacher.
When I was 12 years old, my grandparents passed away. I was really close to them, and losing them was the
hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or think; I felt like I couldn’t even breathe. It was as
if my whole world had fallen down from under me, and I fell into this huge hole of depression(抑郁).
Although I was battling depression, I was determined to make my high school years the best of my life. It was
difficult to be happy, but I had to try. I joined Women’s Choir. Mr. Wright was the choral director and he was so
funny that the first day, I just knew I had made the best decision of my life.
As the year progressed, I loved chorus more and more. I began to smile again and really enjoy life.
Then one day that all changed. My friends —or those that I thought were my friends —started talking about
me behind my back. I was hurt, and I sat by myself. Mr. Wright came over and asked what was wrong. The look in
his eyes told me that I could trust him. Trying hard to fight back tears, I told him the whole story. When I finished,
he nodded and told me, “If you never learn anything from me, learn this: No one is worth stealing your joy.”

A Sky Full of Courage
Sam rushed into Mom’s study. “Look at the feather I found!” He held up a brilliant blue tail feather. “Western
Bluebird! I’ve been looking for this one for ages!” He bounced on his toes. Mom glanced up from her map.
“Amazing.” She grinned, then took a deep breath. “Sam, tomorrow I get to fly a biplane(双翼飞机) over
downtown Portland. It’s the flying club’s contribution to the air show. Want to fly with me?” Sam shook with fear.
Just the thought of flying high in the air made him feel sick. “No thanks, Mom. Sorry.”
He cycled to the volunteer program at the Wildlife Care Center as he usually did on weekends. While Dr.
Malone, the vet(兽医), took care of animals, Sam cleaned cages. Dr. Malone stepped into the room, holding
something gently in her hands. Her quiet words made him glance up. “Look here, Sam! It was found near Matthews
Valley with a broken wing. Probably migrating when an eagle tried to catch her. She was way off course.” The vet
opened her hands to reveal a bird with a bandaged(包扎) wing. Sam jumped to his feet. A Vaux’s swift(雨燕)! “So
the swift’s companions are lost!” Sam concluded.
Every fall, flocks of Vaux’s swifts migrated through Portland on their way south, resting overnight in one
building of his elementary school. People from all over showed up every night to watch thousands of swifts fly
across the evening sky. In the evening, the swifts flew down into his school’s home to sleep for the night. But this
year, September had nearly come and gone without any swifts.
“I can’t believe so many birds can be missing.” Dr. Malone said. “They probably still fly near Matthews
Valley. They need you, Sam.”

Julia always enjoyed running through The Dark Walk towards the light at the end of it. It was a dark, damp
tunnel (隧道) made of smooth branches. This year she had the extra joy of showing it to her small brother, Stephen,
and terrifying him as well as herself.
One day they found a hole on one side of the walk. Inside there was water, in which they perceived a panting
trout (喘息的鳟鱼). They were both so excited that they were no longer afraid of the darkness as they bent down
and peered at the fish panting in his tiny prison, his silver stomach going up and down like an engine; otherwise he
was motionless. Julia wondered what he ate and thought of his hunger. She found him a worm. He ignored the food,
and just went on panting. Bending over him, she thought how he had been in there. All the winter, in the dark
tunnel, all day, all night, floating around alone.
Nobody knew how the fish got there. Her mother suggested that a bird had carried the egg. Her father thought
that in the winter a small stream might have carried it down there as a baby, and it has been safe until summer came
and the water began to dry up. Before they went to bed, Stephen asked his mummy the whole story of the trout, not
really interested in the actual trout, but in the story which his mum began to make up for him, and Julia, in her bed,
presented her back to them and read her book. But she kept one ear cocked. “And so, in the end, this naughty fish
got bigger and bigger, and the water got smaller and smaller...” Passionately, she turned around and cried,
“Mummy, don’t make it a horrible old moral story. Her mom even brought in a fairy (仙子), who had made it rain
and filled the hole, so that the trout could float away down to the river below. Staring at the moon she knew there
was no such thing as a fairy and that trout, down in the tunnel, was panting for his life.

篇完整的短文。
Last summer, I had a life-changing experience when I decided to join a group of volunteers in rescuing
homeless dogs. It all started when I read a post on social media about a group of abandoned dogs in desperate need
of help. Without hesitation, 1 reached out to the organization leading the rescue mission.
Early one Saturday morning, our team gathered at a local animal shelter, armed with determination and a
strong sense of purpose. We loaded the necessary supplies into our van, including food, water, blankets and leashes.
As we set off, a mix of excitement and nervousness filled the air.
Our destination was a run-down area on the outskirts of town. The deserted streets were home to numerous
homeless dogs, which had become victims of neglect. These innocent creatures, once someone’s beloved pets, were
now struggling to survive on their own. Upon arriving, our-hearts sank at the sight of many poor dogs searching for
food among the piles of garbage. It was a heartbreaking scene. We immediately sprang into action, spreading out to
cover every corner of the neighborhood.
Approaching the dogs cautiously, we soon discovered that gaining their trust was not an easy task. Many had
learned to fear humans after lasting unthinkable hardships It took patience, gentle words and gestures to approach
them without causing distress. With’ each successful rescue, our spirits were uplifted. Some dogs willingly
followed us, desperate to escape their miserable lives. Others required a bit more comfort, but eventually, wemanaged to lead them to safety. They received medical attention and were provided with much-needed love.
As the days went by, our team experienced both moments of joy and heartache. Some dogs were fortunate
enough to find loving homes, while others faced challenges due to their extremely unpleasant pasts. But through it
all, we persisted, knowing that saving every life made a difference.
