1. 所需阅读的短文词数在350以内;
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右(词数少于130的,从总分中减去2分);
1. 与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度;
2. 内容的丰富性;
3. 应用语法结构和词汇的丰富性和准确性;
4. 上下文的连贯性;
5. 拼写与标点符号是语言准确性的一个重要方面,评分时,应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑;
(1)故事的发展线索;
(1)根据给出的续写第一段的首句,提出问题、预设故事情节发展走向,确定续写第一段的续写内容;
(2)根据给出的续写第二段的首句,确定续写第一段的最后一句, 以保证两段之间的衔接过渡;
(3)根据给出的续写第二段的首句,思考故事如何结尾,从而确定续写第二段的续写内容;
It was the day of the big cross-country run.Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town
were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten
years old.His usual big toothy smile was absent today.I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other
children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened.“I was afraid that kids from
other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably.“I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him
decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼).I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After
making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to
side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid.He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That
was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.It just took him
longer — that's all.David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other
children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced
and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
David,
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.I quietly said, “David, if you don't want to run today
(if引导条件状语从句), no one is going to make you do.But if you're not running because you're afraid someone is going to
laugh, that's not a good enough reason. There will always be someone who will laugh and say mean words (who引导定语
从句).There are people like that, and that's just the way it is.The real question is whether you are going to let those few
people stop you from doing something you really want to do (whether引导表语从句).Are you going to let them get in
your way?If you really want to run, David, then you run!” I held my breath as David took this in.Then he looked at the
field and said with fierce but quiet determination,“I'm gonna run.”

forward with the other children. But he had only gone a few metres before he tripped and fell flat on the ground. My heart
sank.As I started to shout encouragement, other voices around me appeared too.David picked himself up and started
again. This was David's run.He had worked for it, and he wouldn't give up!At last, he raised his arms in triumph as he
crossed the finish line to wild cheers and applause. At the end of the year, the track coach asked the class to nominate one of
their classmates for the athletic award for their grade.Without hesitation, the whole class voted for David, saying that no
one had worked harder for that award than he (动词-ing短语作伴随状语).

pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken
porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it.Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.Seeing the mess in the kitchen (动词-ing短
语作状语), he immediately understood what had happened (宾语从句), but he wasn't upset.Instead, he applied some
medicine to Jeff's hand, and then set out to help them clean up the mess, throwing away the burnt toast.Next, they began to
make breakfast, and until then the twins looked cheerful. Before long, the porridge was ready.Their father instructed them to
fry the rest of the bread.Soon, the breakfast was ready, too.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up.Opening her eyes, she couldn't believe what she had
seen. Before she could ask any question, their father turned up and told his wife about how the twins had made preparations
to give her the surprise breakfast (about的第一个宾语从句), and what trouble they had gone through when making the
porridge and French toast (about的第二个宾语从句,其中when making相当于when they were making).Disbelief
gave way to excitement and pride.Hugging them in her arms, she said, “Thank you, children. It's such an unforgettable
Mother's Day for me.”
1.续写首句与给出的首段首句的衔接;
2.续写首段尾句与给出的第二段首句的衔接;
3.给出的第二段首句与续写第二段首句的衔接;
During this past year, I've had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way
most people hadn't bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big
Jeep.I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money.Nothing.Right as I was
about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack
but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it.Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and
cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road.We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron.No worries: He handed it to his wife,
and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was
a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands.I tried to put a $20 bill
in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could.I
asked the little girl where they lived.Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit
farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I'd had lunch.
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag.
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag.
Q1: What was my reply? (about lunch) Did I have lunch?
Q2:What did the girl do? (about the paper bag)
Q3:How did I feel?
Q4:How did they left? (after they left)
Q1:What did I find in the paper bag?
Q2:How did I feel?
Q3:How did I change the opinion towards stranger?
Q4:What does the story intend to tell readers?
Not until then did I hear my stomach rumbling.(首句女孩问“我”是否吃午饭了,本句写“我”的反应)
I waved to the family, seeing them walking across the street hand in hand.(第二段首句写在他们离开之后,本句写
In sight came a hamburger and a 20-dollar bill, to which a note was attached.(第二段首句写“我”打开了纸包,本
It was the first time I was not sick of my car trouble but lucky for seeing a beautiful heart.(照应第一段,升华主题:

longer.I waved to the family, seeing them walking across the street hand in hand (动词-ing短语).
After they left, I got into my Jeep and opened the paper bag.In sight came a hamburger and a 20-dollar bill

I tried not to be biased(有偏见的),but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie because I had never had a mentally
challenged employee. He was short, a little fat with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Down’s
Syndrome(唐氏综合症).
I shouldn’t have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his fat little finger, and within a
month my regular truck customers had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot(吉祥物). He was eager to laugh and
to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a coffee spill was
visible when Stevie got done with the table. Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until after the
customers were finished.
Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who was disabled after repeated surgeries for cancer.
Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie
being sent to a group home.
One morning last August, Stevie missed work for the first time in three years. He was at a clinic getting a heart surgery.
People with Down’s Syndrome often have heart problems at an early age so this wasn’t unexpected.
Later that morning, Frannie, the head waitress, did a little dance when she heard the good news that Stevie had come
through the surgery in good shape and would be back at work in a few months. Belle Ringer, one of our regular trucker
customers, stared at her and asked, “Frannie, what was that all about?”
Frannie quickly told Belle Ringer and the other two drivers about Stevie’s surgery and the trouble his mother had
handling all the bills. Belle Ringer nodded thoughtfully.
After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a couple of paper napkins(餐巾纸)in her hand.
“What’s up?”I asked.
“I cleared off that table where Belle Ringer and his friends were sitting, and I found this was folded and put under a
coffee cup.”
She handed the napkin to me, and three $20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold
letters, was printed “Something For Stevie.”
That was three months ago. Then came Thanksgiving, the first day Stevie was supposed to be back, and I had arranged
to have his mother bring him to work. Leading them toward a large corner booth(包间),I could feel and hear the rest of the
staff following behind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;

We stopped in front of the big table covered with coffee cups, all sitting on dozens of folded paper napkins. “First
thing you have to do, Stevie is clean up this mess,” I said in a calm tone, gesturing toward the tableware. Stevie looked at
me, and then his mother, then pulled out one of the napkins. It had “something for Stevie” printed in big, bold letters. As he
picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table. With an I-don’t-get-it look on his face, Stevie stared at the money, then at all
the napkins peeking from beneath the coffee cups, each with his name on it.
I turned to Stevie and his mother, saying “Happy Thanksgiving !” Stevie put on an innocent smile, while his mother
opened her mouth as if to say something but was choked and speechless. I told them that the $10,000 in cash and checks on
that table problems. Soon, it got really noisy, with everybody cheering and shouting, and there were a few tears too. But you
know what’s funny? While everybody else was busy shaking hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big smile on his
face, was busy clearing all the coffee cups from the table

The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I
was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something
and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes.
There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away.
They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she

with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy
than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but
with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been
eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root
cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I
knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so
was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while
Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.

I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight was broken,
as were my eyeglasses and my phone. I turned on the phone and it lit up! Sadly, however, no signal. If only I could get the
still-functioning phone up through the door, it might connect to the Internet, so I could shout at Siri from down below for
help. In the daylight, I could make out Angel was mewing at me from above.
It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. She kept her eye on me. Waving the phone, I instructed “Angel!
catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer, I cast the phone upward. Miraculously, Angel managed to catch it with her
paws as it shot through the door and lay it right by the entrance. Once it connected to the Internet, I yelled at Siri to call
emergency services. With them on the line, I screamed out my situation. When heavy footsteps came near, I knew I was
saved. I no longer wonder if it was Angel who rang the doorbell that day.

I consider myself technologically capable, or at least I used to! However, shopping with my husband the other day
clearly showed I’m being left behind by the times.
Finishing picking lots of goods in Carrefour Supermarket, we walked toward the checkout counters, noticing few
people there. In fact, despite all the lights above the counters on, showing open, there was no cashier (收银员). Walking to a
deserted counter, like an ATM machine, I saw it was brand-new. On the other side of it was a long moving belt leading
down to a kind of island. When I placed my shopping cart near the machine, it monitored my presence and spoke to me in a
soft woman voice, “Please slide your card on the front glass.”
“OK,” I thought, “I can do this.” But my husband thought we should find somebody to walk us through this new
process.
“Are you kidding” I said. “Relax! I’ll have us out of here within seconds.”
“Please slide your card on the front glass,” she asked again, except that this time she sounded a little impatient. Were
they programmed to annoy customers.
I swiped (刷) my card down the card-slider on the side of the machine and it asked me to do it on the front glass. I
thought I must have slid my card upside down so I turned and swiped it again down that slider. Then the not-so-nice-
anymore-computer-machine lady told me I needed help. Honest to God, that was what she said; she said I needed
somebody’s help.
A store assistant noticed this, coming over and I told him there was something wrong with the machine for its not
taking my card. He took my card and slid it on the glass beside the slider I had been using. Then the machine-lady asked me
to scan my goods. The assistant asked if I needed any more help. “No!” I suggested they should program the machine more
precise. He smiled and walked away.
It worked well, so I decided to show my husband I could scan the rest faster. I was doing well when the belt suddenly
stopped and began to move backward. The machine-lady told me to rescan because of an overload on the belt.

What was worse, a bottle fell and broke, making me so annoyed. For a moment everybody stopped what he or she was
doing and looked my way. So embarrassed was I that I stood there clumsily, feeling the blood rushing to my face.
Meanwhile, the beautiful female voice of the machine broke the awful silence: “Please slide your card on the front glass.”
I’ve had just enough of it and I noticed my husband had that familiar “I told you so” look on his face and then he walked
over to the assistant for help who had been turned down by me!
After the assistant helped us out, I turned to my husband. “All right, honey,” he jokingly said, a different comfort
dawning across his lined face, “it’s time for us to sign up for a class (out-of-class tutoring).” This experience made me
realize that only by learning constantly can we handle our life easily and smoothly. So, I start to make myself more modest

Twelve Days of Kindness
Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to
Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also
going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.
“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota. I really miss them and my
friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rachel.
“I know, Rachel. So would I,” I said. “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don’t you remember how hard it was
to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to-30℃ on our way back?”
“I remember,” she said and ducked her head disappointedly.
We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the
question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.
We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren’t expecting anyone. Hesitantly,
Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom, there’s a big box on the doorstep and nobody is
out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody insight.
They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas

After that, we opened one more gift each day. Before uncovering the box, we would sit around the table expectantly

We opened the 12th package on December 25th. We couldn’t contain our excitement, anxious to witness the final

Bruce had a sweet tooth during his childhood, but it was not just sugary snacks that he desired. Being raised in a poor
family was a bittersweet experience, but it gave him adaptability and ambition.
When Bruce was young, his mother would tell him that the candies in the store’s checkout line belonged to the cashier.
She said that because she could not afford a 50-cent chocolate bar. Nevertheless, he saw through her trick and made a
promise that he would grow up to be wealthy enough to buy what his family needed.
Bruce’s father worked hard to make money outside, so he spent less time at home. Instead of focusing on their
economic instability, Bruce’s mother selflessly pushed her children to strive for success so that they could lead a more
comfortable life later. She worked for long hours every night and struggled to pay the minimum due on her bills. Still, she
would find time to read with Bruce and his sister, Alice. Their mother taught them the value of perseverance, education, and
moral fibre. Despite lack of their father’s company, they were loved and nurtured just as much.
However, not all of life’s milestones were easy. Some, like moving and being helpless, left Bruce with an endless bitter
taste. He had to deal with many problems when they moved into Maryland, several states away from their roots in Georgia,
to make a living. The first few months were great: baseball games, family trips to the mall, dinners, movies, etc. It felt like
they were the perfect family. Then things changed. Baseball games were too expensive, and trips to the mall were replaced
with days Bruce and Alice spent isolated in the study.
,
As the brother and sister grew up money was even tighter. They spent many years living in a very poor family setting.
Even so, their mother inspired them to keep trying and working academically. They even cooperated with each other and
developed a computer system. Alice was joking about patenting it someday. But as the saying goes, “Good things never
come easy”, and success requires setbacks.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking.
I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and
painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where
I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories.
If youre willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night
on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the
horses mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I
checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from
the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said,“Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it
again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If
I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked
past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I
entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was
barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the
likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky
spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the
window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped,
and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into
my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was
departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group
and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let
out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say

it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned
around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked
on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and
grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town
were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten
years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children.
He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from
other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making
sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as
he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing.
That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him
longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other
children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced
and was proud of his strong determination.

Possible version 1:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your
mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a
deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I
added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and
expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a
look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway
was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a heart disease. David insisted on running as if he had
forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked
himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You
can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the
20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make

Possible version 2:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Seeing his face filled with anxiety, I felt sad, deciding
to talk something with him. Turning to David, I smiled, “David, Look, what a wonderful event!” “Yeah!” David smiled
weakly, bowing his head. Patting on his shoulder, I said in a soft voice, “I heard you had worked so hard for this event. How
I admire your strong determination. Why not give it a try?” “Teacher, I am afraid kids from other schools will laugh at me. I
think what the coach said is right.” murmured David, with glum looks on his face. “But David, what counts most is to
participate to the best of your ability in whatever we’re doing. Do you agree?” After a temporary hesitation, David nodded
in agreement, finally deciding to join in the cross-country team.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. With a blast of the gun, David tried his best to
shoot from the start line, but he failed. Painful and a bit embarrassed as he was, he still dragged his feet to keep moving
forward. The sun was beating down, the hot weather suffocating. After what seemed years, David, rocking his small body
like a cat on a hot brick, eventually finished his run as the last one. When approaching the finish line, he burst into a big
toothy smile and waved to me with excitement, crying “ I made it! I made it!” All the kids including those from other
schools erupted into a big applause, cheering for his determination and persistence. At that moment, a flush of admiration
and joy swept over me.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How
pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and
chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what
to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to
boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke
two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff
turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the
bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in
the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over
and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess
now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot
burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh
dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost
their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the
challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they
had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife,
who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy - his name was Bernard - had
interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He
wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money.”
said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a
solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what
we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it
into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

Bernard。

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a
good one, too.”
Mrs. Meredith
With everything ready. Bernard started out on his new business.”
Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.

Possible version 1:
When Mrs. Meredith heard of the idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Then Mrs. Meredith searched the internet
and ordered a household popcorn machine. After that, Mrs. Meredith, together with her three children, paid another visit to
the family and told them about the popcorn plan. Needless to say, they were deeply moved, especially Bernard who finally
found a way to make money for his family. A few days later, the machine was delivered to Mrs. Meredith’s doorstep. And it
wasn’t long before they got the hang of using the machine to make popcorn.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Although it was a hard time and things were tight for
everybody, Bernard’s business worked out quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from door to door to
sell it. People were surprised to see such a little, poorly-dressed boy selling popcorn at their doors, but eventually almost all
of them would buy a bag or two. It is love that makes the world go round and Bernard felt it deep in his little heart.
Possible version 2:
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. When the three siblings called on
Bernard and shared the ‘big’ project with the poorboy, Bernard’s face lit up but quickly his excitement faded. “Thank you
for your big box of corn, but I don’t have a single penny to buy popcorn and paper bags.” Bernard sighed heavily. Smiling
slyly, John produced 50 dollars, which was contributed together by Clara and Harry. Excitement returned to Bernard’s face
as he murmured a sincere thank you with a trembling voice.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. With the big box hanging around his neck, Bernard become
the No. 1 popcorn boy in the neighborhood. The three siblings would help him with filling and making changes. Together,
they sold 500 portions in a single day as the neighbors still showed support despite their own poverty. By the end of the day,
Bernard’s corn box was emptied but his cash pot was full of notes and coins.Yet, he knew, from the bottom of his heart, that
