作故事的内容;
辑结构是完善的;
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from hishome to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had
encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along
alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this
beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But
when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up
with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the
spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its
head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open
his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down.
He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the
wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think
much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted
what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized
that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was
catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him.Paragraph2:
Afewminuteslater,the other two cyclists arrived.

Paragraph 1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac jumped off his bicycle and rushed to the door of the
car. But before Mac could open the door, the wolf had caught up and jumped to attack. Luckily, the magic
spray saved Mac a third time. Seeing the wolf back off, Paul quickly unlocked the door, and the
frightened man climbed into the car in no time, shutting the door behind him heavily. Becky looked out
of the back window and saw the wolf standing over Mac’s bicycle as if it were a kill. Soon after, the
animal ran off.
Paragraph 2:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. Mac got out of the car and hugged his friends. “It was
really a nightmare and I thought I was going to die,” said Mac in a shaky voice, tears gathering in his
eyes. For him, life could never be more beautiful. After saying goodbye to Paul and Becky with gratitude,
the three men continued their trip, agreeing never to separate again.4.
认真读题,看看和平时训练的题是否相同,有没有要用什么单词,有没有单词数量的限制;
I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates
or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I
was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who
trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I
debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the
highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason
to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with
my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow
response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad
performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began
missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no
choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team
they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my
debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the
one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.
Paragraph1:
But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined.
___________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine.
___________________________________________________________________
But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine.
主人公“我”,老师“an experienced teacher”,judges,teammates — Eton,Vivian
the best debater 最佳辩手
self-pride/self-important 骄傲
be confident of myself
阐述Eton、Vivian通过自己努力超过了主人公“我”,从而强调“Diligence makes up for
inability(勤能补拙)”的主题。
But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. At first, my teammates performed
well, but when I stated points, my mind went blank. My illogical lecture made the audience and
judges confused and disappointed. Lacking practices, I was grilled once and once again by our
opponents who asked a series of questions that I didn’t make preparations for. I had to struggle on
with my speech, feeling a lump in my throat. My hands were trembling and my sweat traced a path
down my pale face. Had it not been for me, we wouldn’t lose the debate.
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. I turned around and there was my
teacher smiling at me. I threw myself into her arms, not daring to look at her in the eye. She said
in a soft voice, “The failure is only a stepping stone to final success”. My teammates helped mewipe the tears off my cheeks. It was at that moment that I truly understand the importance of
teamwork and modesty which I have kept in mind till today.

To one's +
To my surprise,Tom won the first prize in the English Speech Contest.
Much / Greatly to my surprise, Tom won the first prize in
the English Speech Contest.
To my great surprise, Tom won the first prize in the English Speech Contest.【升级2】to the +情绪名词+ of sb(名词或者代词),比如我想要表达的是:
To the surprise f his parents, he won the first prize in the English Speech Contest.
这里把To my surprise改成了To the surprise f his parents ,本质上,是两种
To his surprise and joy, he won the first prize in the English Speech Contest.
I,to my surprise, found that Tom won the first prize in the English Speech
Contest.
What+情绪动词+sb +was +that 从句
What surprised me was that Tom won the first prize in the English Speech Contest.
【其他类】puzzle, confuse, interest, relax, touch, move, embarrass, impress
sb. felt a great sense of + 情绪名词+ welling up in sb’s heart and surging
through sb.
这个句子的亮点是后半句welling up in sb’s heartand surging through sb.,把情绪的描写形象化,具体化了。
Jane felt a great sense of horror welling up in her heart and surging through her.
Jane felt a great sense of jealousy welling up in her heart and surging through her.
Seeing his husband chatting with a beautiful girl , Jane felt a great sense of jealousy welling up in
her heart and surging through her.
Jane felt a great sense of jealousy welling up in her heart and surging through her ,throwing the book at
the girl.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He
would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew(宵禁),He believed he was
practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don't trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked
away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door
and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball," I said, bringing her into
my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the
house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won't she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could
come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I
patted her head, “I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good.”
“Mom's not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She's just trying to keep you from turning into
a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke. The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.

"Go back, Mom! Go back!" shouted my six-year-old daughter, June. I quickly turned around to
cast my doubtful eyes on the back seat, worried I had forgotten her younger sister. I was relieved to
see the girls safe and sit in their car seats, but June's expression was one of pure anxiety. "Mom, we
have to go back," she insisted. “Someone needs our help!”
As I looked back from the driver's seat, I spotted a young man in rags playing his guitar. His
skinny, poor-looking dog rested next to his feet near an old, worn cardboard sign that
read,“Homeless, please help.”
We'd come across homeless people before and had talked about their needs and struggles. I
should seize the chance to set a good example for my daughters to give a helping hand. So I searched
for some cash, only to find I had nothing but credit cards." I'm sorry, sweetheart, but I don't have any
cash," I said. “I have some, Mom!" June replied. She opened her little pink purse and pulled out a
five-dollar bill. “Oh, good. I'll pay you back when we get home,” I responded with a sigh of
relief. “No, Mom,” she insisted, “I want to help him. I don't want you to pay me back. I want to give
him my money.”
As we drove down the crowded rows of the parking lot, I reassured her that we would get to
him. When we got there, I called out, “Excuse me, sir!" He cautiously walked toward our car and
answered, “Yes, ma'am?” “Here you go, sir.” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her fivedollar bill through the window and explained, “I want you to have this." He smiled and hesitatingly
asked, “This was your money?” “Yes! I want you to have it,” she proudly answered. “Thank you,”
he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.
We exchanged a smile, and as we drove away, my younger daughter Scarlett began to cry. I

On a snowy day Steve sat down on the usual seat in the Union Square. Every Thanksgiving for nine
years he had sat down there at one in the afternoon. Every time, a wonderful thing happened to him,
which made his heart feel full of joy.
On those other Thanksgiving Days, Steve usually had been hungry. But today Steve was not hungry.
He had come from a dinner so big that he had almost no power to move. His body had suddenly become
too big for his clothes; it seemed ready to break out of them. They were torn. You could see his skin
through a hole in the front of his shirt. But the cold wind, with snow in it, felt pleasantly cool to him.
The dinner had not been expected. He had been passing a large house near the beginning of that
great broad street called Fifth Avenue, where lived two ladies of an old family who had a deep love of
tradition that on Thanksgiving Day food will be offered to the first hungry person to walk by. Today
Steve happened to be the one to pass by on his way to the park.Steve sat in the park, appearing to be waiting for somebody, but appearing not to expect something to
happen. Suddenly his eyes grew wider and his breath stopped. For the old gentleman was coming across
Fourth Avenue toward Steve's seat.
Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years the old gentleman had come there to find Steve on his
seat. Then he had led Steve to a restaurant and watched him eat a big dinner, which had been a part of
Thanksgiving Day. The old gentleman was thin and tall and sixty. His hair was whiter and thinner than it
had been last year. His legs shook, seeming not as strong as they were the year before.

The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a
silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze. When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with pieces of sparkling red, pink and clear
glass. Missi said. "Oh, no, not the vase.''
"Why? What did I do?" My face reddened.
"Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to
America, Missi replied nervously. "If you’d broken anything else in the apartment, 1 would've
gladly said I did it. But you're going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she's going to

1 was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom (传家宝).Why did I have to spin
around like that?
We gathered up the shattered pieces. 1 kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said
gently it didn't look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile, like a colorful,
swirly light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. My stomach was in knots. Would her mom yell at
me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn't stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn't
stop playing the” fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing.
The only thing I could think of to say was “I'm sorry. ”
A couple of minutes after six we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in the mountains
that led to a tiny cabin(小木屋)with no electricity and no running water. She wanted to stay home
reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.
“Ready?” Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast. Edun looked out of the window and only saw rain,
lots of it. “We should go another day,” Edun suggested. “Maybe a hundred years from now.” She worried
she would get tired on the hike. She worried about getting bored at the dark cabin. Mom said it was time
to stop worrying and get into the car.
Edun’s brother, Will, was waiting in the garage, who wore a camera around his neck. Will was four
years older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He’d started hiking when he was two
and loved it.
Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her
waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn’t like how it felt against her
skin.
After about half an hour’s drive, they parked at a trailhead(登山口). The rain had stopped but the
ground was still dripping wet. “We’ll be there by afternoon!” Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far
away.
Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch — “Fox sparrow!” — then he raced down the trail
and was soon out of sight.
Edun rested under a pine tree. “You can’t force me to walk,” Edun said. “You’re right,” said her

I need to do something in my community(社区)in order to complete the community service hours
required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup
kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing our dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be
doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad
dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already
outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we
opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless:
How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While
some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous, I didn’t have too much time
to worry about it. I was assigned (分配)to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and
said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them
wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while othersseemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but
they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there
were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and
around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence.
He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him
why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid
that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to
run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the rightthing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his
small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at
school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in
whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided
to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice,
and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special
education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his
strong determination.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely
bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the
night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-
called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I
even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls
were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class
was geometry, but where was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up
and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What's yours?” Even
though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I
decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite
conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK,
and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people
huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got
close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a
letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right
next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”

When Dr. Gullickson was assigning project mates for his introduction to experimental psychology
class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun
with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the intense, fiercely competitive, singularly serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As
fate would have it, Dr. Gullickson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I
would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.I went up to my new lab mate and
introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold
him back and probably cause his grade-point average to take a nosedive. He wasn't outright mean or
abusive. He just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did
it alone.Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make
the best of it and didn’t say anything, lest I make things worse. The project required each lab team to
develop a hypothesis, set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, run the tests,do the statistical
analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student
who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched.
I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him
the satisfaction of my chickening out. After lengthy discussions,we somehow agreed to do a study on
the tactile-kinesthetic perception of space. I wasn’t sure what it meant, but at least we had a topic.

Summers in the mid, 70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a

The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to
work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field
looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and painted at a weed
which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify
different grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle.
It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount
to.
At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for
Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed.
They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the
kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to
the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and
left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in
some milk. Jema found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jef turned on the
second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started
frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the
burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire
so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next
minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed
calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jef to clean it up
so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner
and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell
of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was
sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for
close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千
斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck
pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her
that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then
he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it
over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He
handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in
15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I
tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and
gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They
were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they
would go home.

Pumpkin (南瓜)carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In
the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad
has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I
carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason,
was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was
determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the
annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the
opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit,
my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞)
forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said,
and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It
was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward
than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against
the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I
shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the
town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the

bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man
sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little
boy — his name was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help
to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him
to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great
idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成) .”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a
research camp outside “ the polar bear capital of the world ” — the town of Churchill in Manitoba,
Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals —
should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be
through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of
those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and
smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He
pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard,
and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this
polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30
minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. Thecamp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I
approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry
roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪) get
the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours
out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for
now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it.” he said.“I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of
sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay,
Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem
interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they
knew their son would be back to visit, Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but
the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried, “What should we do to
cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but
us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy
welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on
it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

I’m from the fishing town of Kinsale, in Ireland. Life is pretty good there, but Dubai caught my
attention when I was 18. I moved there myself 10 years ago as a 30-year-old film-maker. It’s been a wild
ride, full of chaos and wonder.
My wife, Christine, lives here with me; when her sister Angela came to visit in April this year, the
three of us set off in my pickup truck. It was a cloudless day, touching 40 ℃. The heat and humidity were
violent, so we had to sightsee from the car.
We took the scenic route between Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah, a charming city in the north. A year
earlier, while off-roading with a friend, I got stuck at a water crossing there, at the only inlet on the coast,
where the sea flows into a swampy lagoon (咸水湖). I had to be rescued, and learned how quickly the
tide (潮水) could come in.
Christine spotted what looked like the Loch Ness monster stuck in the sand. We decided to
investigate and drove up to where the sand met the lagoon. It was a camel, not moving.
Since relocating here, I have always kept a shovel, rope, torches and knives in my car—getting stuck
in the desert can be debilitating
I got out my shovel and approached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed her Stucky. It looked
as if she had been trapped for hours—she was in quite deep. I’ve been around camels a lot in Dubai; they
are massive. They can be friendly, but they can also be fierce. I approached Stucky slowly and started to
gently dig away the sand around her. I kept patting her. I knew if she swung her head around quickly, she
could injure herself, or me.

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so
we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He
often said, "You can do anything you want to do." My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady
rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson
in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I
felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship(实习
资格) in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I'm
new and they're new, so if I'm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the
president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad
and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That's exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television.
Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come
at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I
caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but
excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and
said, “What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All I want is a chance to audition(试镜) I
just want you to know my face, That's all I'm asking"I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, bur two weeks later, his secretary
called. "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I
immediately answered, “Sure!”

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our
pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little
trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we advertised, we
would receive a reply on a postcard which said,“Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter.
It must be red mahogany (红木). I can pay$10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not
sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small,
so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I
decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room
cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house.
Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job,
nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained
to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us
every time she saw our advertisement. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent
us the same postcard every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would
never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the
postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them—what else could I do?

It was the first week of Mia's middle school. The bell's ringing brought her out of her daydreaming.
She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Mia followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and
laughed, using the break to socialize. Mia, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her
head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn't think others would like
her.Mia finally sat in Mr. Johnson's Language Arts class nervously. "Welcome to Language Arts,” said
Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Mia forgot to daydream and laughed along with
the rest of the class. “We'll have some fun with language," he said. "Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Mia desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in
the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的)face, she felt
hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the
blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea
fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As
she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her
feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward," said the teacher. “Let's see what we have.” For the rest of the
class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Mia originally thought it would be awkward.
However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's voice. "He's actually enjoying
this," she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students' papers not read,
including Mia's paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their
work themselves in front of the class next class.
