表示“抓住”类的动词:seize, grasp, grip , take hold of
(1)Fear gripped her heart.
(2)Jealousy seized her.
(3)A wild joy took hold of her.
(4)A feeling of panic seized her.
(5)Anxiety tore her into pieces.
(6)Anger and bitterness covered upon me for weeks.
于是,动词通常是 get the better of或者get the best of(都表示
He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
the better of 的结构,表示“胜过”。
(1)Enthusiasm gets the better of me.
(2)Boredom often gets the best of them.
(3)His curiosity got the better of him .
),还可以是 prey(捕猎,折磨)
(1)Worrying deprived him of sleep.
(2)Excitement deprived me of all power of speech.
(3)Astonishment and horror oppressed her.
(4)Anger and bitterness had preyed upon me continually.
(爬),有时还会咬(gnaw)、吞噬(swallow/swallow)你。
例如 :(1)Happiness crawls up to the tips of his brows.
(2)A slight feeling of fear slowly crept on him.
(3)Self-doubt began to gnaw away at her confidence.
(4)Fear swallowed her.
(1)Joy shone from his brow.
(2)Happiness radiates from her face.
(3)Smile spread across his face.
(4)She has been in a dark mood this week. ( a dark mood 用黑暗
(5)His face clouded over when he heard the news.
而这些情感负担的unburden(卸去)、lose(失去)则会让人感到轻松、获得解脱。例如:
(1)Grief bears heavily on her.
(2)He was burdened with worries
(3)The manager carried his anger.
(4)After I lost my temper,I felt lighter. ( lost my
(5)Unburdening herself of her anger gave her a sense of relief.
常见的动词有:涌出(well up),surge(涌动 )甚至 sweep (冲;卷 ),有时 fill/brim/take possession of (注满/盛满 / 占满 )容器,有时overflow/well(漫出/溢出)容器,
在高温下甚至会boil(沸腾) .
(1)Panic surged up within him .
(2)The terrible scene filled her with fear.
(3)A wave of panic swept over her.
(4)The loneliness and grief comes in waves.
(1)His heart is overflowing with joy.
(2)I could feel anger boiling up inside me.
(3)He was brimming with sorrow when she left him .

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as
they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’
eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was theforest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of
which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting
excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength
from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his
health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa
declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and
grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what
happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest.
Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones
rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where
the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How
many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer
him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But
he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”

The Christmas Spirit Strikes Again
I always dreamed of making a big surprise of a lifetime. Thanks to a little determination,
some luck, and a generous helping of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.
My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to study.
She was graduating just before Christmas, but due to my own scholarly schedule back home, I
would be unable to make it down in time for her graduation. She was understandably
disappointed, and I felt guilty that I wasn’t able to be there for her on this special occasions.
While I was talking to my professor the week before my sister’s graduation, she commented,
“Well, if you want to go, just go ahead!" I couldn’t believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. “Just
make sure you get permission from administrator (行政主管),” she added. My heart sank. The
administration at my school was infamous for denying any sort of time-off requests. I almost
didn’t bother asking, because I knew it would be a waste of time. But something in me decided to
try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affects the
administrator at this time of year. When I returned home to check the reply in my inbox, I steeled
myself for disappointment. I held my breath, opened the e-mail, and started to read. And re-read,
just to make sure I’d understood. Approval? I couldn’t believe my luck!
Immediately, I called the airline. Unexpectedly, even during the busy Christmas season, I was
able to change my ticket to arrive the day before my sister’s graduation. With news this fantastic, I
was bursting to tell my sister. But, fingers on the dial((拨号盘), I paused. Wouldn’t it be much
more fantastic if I could surprise her? What a state of shock she would be in! Slowly a great idea
came to my mind. I decided a much more dramatic arrival than just a ring of the doorbell. What if
I couldn’t arrive in a box?
I started to plot.

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that
my family couldn’t afford one, so I settled for a bedside table with lockable drawers, a safe place
to keep my private stuff.
We went to the charity shop where we found an old dark one. It didn’t look too cool, but I
thought that I would paint it to make it look better.
After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out. I felt
something stuck to the back. I reached in all the way, and guess what? A sealed bag with some
papers in it.
When I opened the bag, I realized that the papers were official documents. And, wrapped in
them were a bunch of ten and twenty dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my
birthday!
“Is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out
to be a will. Some old lady was leaving her savings for her son and grandchildren.
My mind was going crazy. Was I the luckiest twelve-year-old ever? With this money I could
buy the coolest bicycle. Who knows?
I began counting. When I reached a thousand dollars, my mother was knocking on my
bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“Do you want some help? Is everything all right?” she asked.
No, everything was not right. Actually, my stomach was growling (低吼).
“I’m okay,” I lied.
When my mother left my room, I lay on my bed, starting thinking. What a dilemma (窘境)! I
wished there were some one I could talk with. Could I keep it and get all kinds of stuff for me and
my family? It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, if I shared it...right? Thoughts ran through mymind. But I really didn’t need someone else to give me the answer.

It’s a beautiful sunny day. The Bonds boarded their boat for a carefree day trip to Dove Island
for some fishing as a family custom. Thomas Bond, a 30-year-old construction worker, loved the
sport, especially catching bass (鲈鱼) and had impressed on his oldest daughter, Lizzy, a love of
the outdoors, teaching her how to bait (下诱饵) a hook and cast a line and brave the waves.
The family spent the day fishing in the vast ocean, and then left the island in the early
evening. Upon setting off from the shore, they found thick fog rolling in. Lizzy fell into a light
sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Molly, at a table on the boat’s lower deck (甲板). Their
father’s sharp orders woke her up: “Get out of the boat. The boat’s sinking!” Lizzy pushed her
sister into the cold, dark water. Both girls wore life jackets. The adults did not. The girls were
followed by their mother, Petra Bond, who was expecting a baby at that time. Within seconds, the
boat was damaged and was left just the tip of its bow in the air.
Looking into the faces of her father, mother, and sister, Lizzy wasn’t frightened. After some
time, her father told them he would swim for help. “I’ll be back,” he said before disappearing into
the darkness.
“Dad is like the superhero to me. I believe he will get help to rescue us,” Lizzy said toherself. After some time, her mother became quiet and stopped swimming. Lizzy wrapped a rope
around her mother’s chest and tied her to the boat so she wouldn’t float away. Then her sister fell
quiet too and she stayed beside her.
To keep herself awake, Lizzy daydreamed about what they would do after they were rescued.
They would stay in a hotel, order room service, and lie comfortably under the blankets in bed,
cozy and warm.

Shrieking Toad and Dancing Ant
Kids got nicknames at a summer camp, and mine is Shrieking Toad I guess it
was my fault that I couldn't get a cool one.
A bunch of us campers were on our first nature walk. When we broke for lunch, we sat down
on logs. I was on my nuts when a tree frog dropped onto my shirt from the branches above. I
shrieked. It was totally unconscious and I didn't even know I could make a sound like that. Most
kids forgot about it except Stan. Whenever I walked by, he'd shout, “Shrieking Toad, show us how
you can hop!” I corrected him that it had been an eastern gray tree frog, not a toad, but that just
made things worse.
Three days later, Counselor Matt announced we would be paired for a treasure hunt. Excitedwhispers spread through the camp. But when he read “Jay and Stan” as a team, my nerves got
completely fried. Stan shouted, “Great! Shrieking Toad!” Then he called to the group, and I went
red at what came out of his mouth. “Guys, if mosquitoes are bugging you, ask Shrieking Toad to
eat them. Toads love bugs!” Kids roared with laughter.
After all the teams wandered off, Stan and I were alone. Then I had a great idea, surprising
myself that I hadn't thought of it earlier. I suggested we split up so as to have a better chance of
finding treasures. “Yeah, I'd better do what I'm toad (told).” Stan laughed and set off.
Ten minutes later, I heard something that reminded me of myself a few days ago. I ran toward
the sound. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Stan was jumping
around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded jumping
around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded like “Dance!
Dance!” Seeing him scratching at his body and hitting at his clothes made me realize what he was
really saying: “Ants! Ants!”

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an
object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got itwhen I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he
called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could
make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have
any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how
huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-
sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused
to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was
finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the
park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be
there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an
omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.
We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make
sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right
behind, holding the bicycle.
