lot taller and “meaner” looking.
Whistle blew. Five of us started on the court. Our opponent got hold of the ball first. They were unbelievably
fast. They kept breaking our defences and kept scoring goals. Excited parents were cheering so much that their
faces were as red as beetroots. Even our best, Bryce, could not stop our opponents from scoring, which annoyed
him a lot. By half time, both teams were extremely exhausted and our opponents were ten goals ahead, which
presented us with an enormous but achievable challenge.
Jack was awfully anxious as we were not playing anywhere near our best. He told us that we could still win if
we made our transitions much quicker so that penalty shots came our way.He also directed us to rebound (抢断篮
板) and position ourselves better to receive and score goals. Most important, he reminded us to play as a team.
Our team was all fired up. The second half started in our favour. We were as quick as lightning on the court.
We were dribbling (运球), passing, shooting and rebounding without any mistakes. We caught our opponents by
surprise. The scores were almost level. We were trailing only by one point. The crowd was growing wild with
excitement, fuelling our confidence. At the same time, our opponents switched back to attention and started playing
like what they did in the first half, making it harder for us to score.
One minute left! Our opponent threw in the ball but I managed to steal it! Our team was bursting with
happiness! More opponents were heading my way and I had to pass the ball to Bryce. Instead of passing on the ball,
he did the most unexpected thing. He tried to score from half court! He missed by miles!

I didn’t continue college after graduation. I moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a

But my first day was welcomed by the students’ indifference (冷漠). The desks were messy and the whole

The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. After my repeated persistence,
they finally turned off the playground mode. But just a few minutes passed when I noticed two kids quarreling in
the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident but one kid named Jeremy bothered me. He shouted at me for coming
at him. And when I asked them to return to their seats, he slammed (用力摔) his backpack and grew mad as I tried
to urge him to take the right attitude. “I don’t like you, homework and this afterschool program! All you guys do is
yell at me. I’m never coming back.” he walked out of the classroom, slamming the door.Naturally, I was so frustrated (挫败的). I wondered why I am here. Most kids disrespected me! I paused to
take a deep breath. Then suddenly I thought to myself, “You said you would never serve people again, but you
don’t understand what these kids really need.” At that moment, I remembered my middle-school life. I always had
a poor attitude, never did my schoolwork, repeatedly got into fights, and disrespected my elders.

I saw my father’s car pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, played

A good time was bad by all, and soon it was time to return. During the journey back, we stopped at a Dhaba
for tea and snacks near the Mehana district. That’s when I noticed suddenly that the rope with which the luggagewas tied on and of the carriers had come loose and one of the suitcases was missing. It must have fallen off
somewhere along the way.
Although it didn’t contain any valuables—just clothes and some cash, we decided to retrace our steps, drawing
back four kilometres, looking for the bag. But luck wasn’t our friend: we could not locate it and returned to
Ahmedabad depressed.
After about a month, one day, while in my office, I got a call from my assistant that a certain Mr. Shah wanted
to see me. I was in the middle of a meeting so he was asked to wait. After I got done, I called him into my office.
I was looking after the development of small industries in the state at the time, so my immediate query was.
“How can we help you? Do you want to set up an industry or are you facing any issues in your enterprise?”
To which he said, “No, sir. I have not come for any official help. It is a personal matter. Did you lose
something recently?”
Of course, it all came back to me and I told him about the lost suitcase from the cab back from Mount Abu a
month ago.

Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less
because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract
his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because
Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing
downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

boxes under the tree — but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment He
pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford
one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad assured me.
And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I naively（幼稚地）
thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was considerably more complex than I had
anticipated. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on
the log house. In the dark yellow electric light, Dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

I will not come with you."
The jackal said, "Trust me. Let us knot （打结）our tails together. Then I will not be able to leave
you." The tiger agreed unwillingly to this proposal. So the jackal tied their tails in a knot. Now they
walked towards the cave together.
