重难点 17 读后续写
根据新高考三年的考情分析，读后续写的阅读材料一般以350词以内的记叙文和夹叙夹议文为主，偶有少量议
论文。考生要在此文的后面续写约150词左右的文字与前文构成一个完整的故事。读后续写不是随心所欲地写，而
是要在所给段落开头和所标出关键词的帮助下完成续写部分(150词左右)。其中，段落开头语与传统写作中的开头
语类似，在某种程度上引导你的思路向某个方面发展，所续写部分不能脱离各自的段落开头语另起炉灶，要在其基
础上进行拓展发挥。体裁多为记叙文，时态为过去时，预计2024年高考读后续写考查形式仍会延续其考查形式。

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I
did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and
painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I
played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories.
If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on
April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the
horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I
checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from
the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it
again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I
didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children.
He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from
other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making
sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as
he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates
thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why
none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s
all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did
always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of
his strong determination.

to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn’t looking, she looked at
me with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter. The woman pushed the gray hair from her lined forehead and continued
wiping the counter.
I glanced again at my watch. I planned to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But just as I mentallymade up my letter, I had a memory of Rosie, a former coworker of mine. I could hear her sweet voice recommend me, “Be
what’s missing.”
“What do you mean, ‘Be what’s missing’?” I had asked the first time I heard her use that phrase. “Whenever you find
yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing.” Rosie smiled at my blank stare. “It’s
really simple when you think about it. If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is inconsiderate, then
thoughtfulness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide
whatever the situation needs.”
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How was I supposed to “be what’s missing”? What was missing was service.
But then the woman who had wiped the counter walked slowly toward the cash register. With deliberately paced words, she
asked, “May I help you?”
I was not satisfied with her service, and I was so angry that I almost lost my temper. But again I heard Rosie’s voice,
“Be what’s missing.”
I took a deep breath. It was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on — by someone who was, no doubt, overworked,
underappreciated, and underpaid. With Rosie’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order… and smiled. “How
are you today?”

to keep active.
I showed up with butterflies in my stomach and low expectations. I just knew once they saw how out of shape I was,
they’d let me kick the ball a few times and then look for a younger girl. During drills, I was slow and got breathless easily,
but my desire to do that made me drive forward. Maybe they were touched by my spirit or maybe they just needed a player—
they let me in anyhow.
I couldn’t have been happier! They took my shirt size, jersey (球衣) number and my team name. I chose “Mama Platt”
because it was what a couple of the students called me, and I chose my dad’s soccer number from high school: 7. I still
remember the moment I stood in a sporting goods store. Was that really happening? I couldn’t believe it. These girls were
actually going to let me be a part of the team!

bedroom and opened it. Inside the package, there was some wrapping bubble plastic sheets. When Mr.Maude emptied the
package, to his surprise, he found not one but two ring boxes. Inside each box, there was a ruby ring. The two rings are only
slightly different from each other. “This is obviously not supposed to be a buy-one-get-one-for-free offer. Ruby rings are just
too expensive for that. Most probably, this is a mistake of some kind,” Mr. Maude said to himself.

This February, Music World organized a musical festival in Seoul and my song Dream Goes On was also chosen as the
theme tune for the festival. I watched on YouTube as my song was being played to a huge crowd of people. It was amazing.
After three days of the festival, I was contacted by Music World and they asked if I’d like to go to Seoul to sing Dream
Goes On in a concert. They flew me out there the next day. I was welcomed like a celebrity—everyone I met thought I was a
big name in England. I had to break the news to them that I wasn’t a pop star.注意：

Finally, mercifully, the bell rang! We threw on our coats, gathered our homework and our lunch boxes, tied on our
scarves and then, carefully, we cradled our offerings of love and off we ran to our individual homes! I was so excited! I ran
as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. I paused at the corner of my house, to catch my
breath and savor the moment. Then I glanced down to admire my offering one last time before I hung it lovingly over the
doorknob. Horrors! Shock, dread and depression! My flowers were gone! Apparently, bouncing out on my mad dash home,
all that was left was a sad, messed-up, wrinkled little empty basket! I stood on the doorway and burst into mournful sobbing
tears.

Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of

decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in

In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles
were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on
the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place
looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking
forward to overly stuffed clams——a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another
Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any
symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned
that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung
infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It
was almost too much to bear.

“Well,” my mom said with a smile, “when it comes to homework, they don’t necessarily do things you order. Second, I
doubt if you’re responsible for everyone else’s part. Why don’t you check in with your teacher about it?”
When I talked to my teacher the next day, he explained he would grade the assignment partly on the finished brochure
but mostly on our individual work, which made me much less worried.

which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe（滑动屏幕）.
“Swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the
right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone on the sofa.
“Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”

Tucker went down to the basement and found his father surrounded by piles of flattened cardboard boxes. Can you play

His father looked over the wall of boxes. “I promised your mom I’d get all these boxes broken down and ready for
recycling. In a little while, pal.”
Tucker fished a small, yellow toy car from his pants pocket and settled down to watch. When he pulled aside a box to

“Dad, can I have some boxes?” Tucker asked.
“Sure, if you clean up when you’re done,” answered Dad.
And some tape, too?” Tucker continued.
His father smiled, grabbed the tape, and tossed it to Tucker. “Have fun.”
Despite the cold, he was sweating from carrying a mountain of cardboard into the backyard. When Paul finished his
game and walked across the backyard, Tucker threw the sticky silver tape roll to him and said, “Oh, brother. I need help with
