When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I
did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and
painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I
played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories.
If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on
April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the
horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I
checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from
the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it
again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I
didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

【答案】 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won
the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the
news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly.
Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said,“It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t
have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said
“Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about
it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a
famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.

4.(2022·新高考I卷)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town
were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten
years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children.
He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from
other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making
sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as
he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates
thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why
none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s
all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did
always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of
his strong determination.

__________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your
mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a
deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I
added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and
expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a
look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was
extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had
forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked
himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You
can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the
20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make
something unusual happen finally.

Be What’s Missing
Where was that cashier? Angry, I glanced at my watch. I barely had enough time to eat my hamburgers and then dash
back to the hospital where I worked.
I looked around the nearly empty fast-food restaurant but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman whom I guessed
to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn’t looking, she looked at
me with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter. The woman pushed the gray hair from her lined forehead and continued
wiping the counter.
I glanced again at my watch. I planned to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But just as I mentally
made up my letter, I had a memory of Rosie, a former coworker of mine. I could hear her sweet voice recommend me, “Be
what’s missing.”
“What do you mean, ‘Be what’s missing’?” I had asked the first time I heard her use that phrase. “Whenever you find
yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing.” Rosie smiled at my blank stare. “It’sreally simple when you think about it. If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is inconsiderate, then
thoughtfulness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide
whatever the situation needs.”
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How was I supposed to “be what’s missing”? What was missing was service.
But then the woman who had wiped the counter walked slowly toward the cash register. With deliberately paced words, she
asked, “May I help you?”
I was not satisfied with her service, and I was so angry that I almost lost my temper. But again I heard Rosie’s voice,
“Be what’s missing.”
I took a deep breath. It was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on — by someone who was, no doubt, overworked,
underappreciated, and underpaid. With Rosie’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order… and smiled. “How
are you today?”

【答案】My greeting seemed to surprise her. She eyed me for a second before answering. “Not too good.” “I’m sorry.” I
said. “I hope it gets better starting right now.” She almost smiled as she looked at me “Thanks. I hope you’re right.” I thought
to myself as I ate my sandwich. We’re all the same, really. We have problems and angers, we get tired and we hurt. We need
to be nicer to each other.
After dinner, I placed everything in my tray and wiped the table more thoroughly than usual. The woman was watching
me, a big smile on her face. She walked over and took away the things from the table, saying “Thanks. You are so kind. You
make my day.” I said, “If this can make you happy, what I have done is worthwhile.” I walked out of the restaurant and felt
cheerful. “Be what’s missing.” It worked. I hoped everyone can be friendly to others.

I worked at a local university and our office was staffed with a few student workers. One of the students was a member
of an amateur soccer team that needed a player. She overheard me talking to another student about how I’d always wanted to
play soccer, but never got the chance. The soccer player offered to let me come and try out for the position.
I was excited and scared. Excited at the thought of doing something I’d always wanted to do, but scared that I was too
out of shape and too old to keep up with athletic twenty-year-olds. There was no harm trying out, though. I agreed to be on
the field for practice.
My husband and children thought I was crazy but I didn’t care. I didn’t move much while doing my job at the university
and I’d just taken up running to turn back the clock a little. I had all the mom responsibilities, too. Between my work and
family responsibilities, finding time for myself seemed impossible, but I knew playing soccer with kids would motivate me
to keep active.
I showed up with butterflies in my stomach and low expectations. I just knew once they saw how out of shape I was,
they’d let me kick the ball a few times and then look for a younger girl. During drills, I was slow and got breathless easily,
but my desire to do that made me drive forward. Maybe they were touched by my spirit or maybe they just needed a player—
they let me in anyhow.
I couldn’t have been happier! They took my shirt size, jersey (球衣) number and my team name. I chose “Mama Platt”
because it was what a couple of the students called me, and I chose my dad’s soccer number from high school: 7. I still
remember the moment I stood in a sporting goods store. Was that really happening? I couldn’t believe it. These girls were

【答案】One possible version:
In order not to let my team down, I decided to improve myself. I ran as much as I could around my neighborhood to get
in better shape and improve my speed. Passing the ball was the most challenging part for me because I was not flexible
enough, so I did much practice in private. When it was time for the team drill, I would always show up on time and try my
best to cooperate with my teammates. After months of practice, I was able to do my part successfully! Anyway, I felt
prepared for the coming games!
We won our first game, our second and our third. Some nights we played two games back to back. It was exciting, tiring
and the most fun I had ever had in my life! We only lost once during the entire season and ended up winning the
championship. It was the experience of a lifetime! I turned thirty-nine while playing soccer with college kids. I remember
driving home after the last game and realizing that taking chances could open doors to opportunities you had never
considered possible!

Mr. Maude was thinking about what to buy for his wife as a gift for their 10th wedding anniversary(周年纪念日). One
day, he happened to notice Mrs. Maude talking to a friend, showing interest in her ruby ring and he realized he would be able
to make Mrs. Maude happy if he bought one for her. Mr. Maude couldn’t understand why ladies had so much passion for
expensive stones of all colors, but he would be willing to do anything for his wife for such a great occasion.
As SM is a famous jewelry brand(珠宝品牌), Mr. Maude decided to buy the ruby ring from their online store. He found
the store and contacted them. A lady at the customer service recommended one that she promised no lady could refuse. It was
worth $12,000. Of course, it would cost Mr. Maude an arm and a leg, but he thought Mrs. Maude deserved it. Without much
hesitation, Mr. Maude bought what the service lady recommended, expecting to give his wife a big surprise. What he didn’t
expect was that what he finally received from SM was more than a surprise
Days after Mr. Maude placed the order online, he received a parcel from SM when his wife was taking care of the
garden. Thinking that he needed to take a look at the real thing before he gave it to his wife, he took the parcel to the
bedroom and opened it. Inside the package, there was some wrapping bubble plastic sheets. When Mr.Maude emptied the
package, to his surprise, he found not one but two ring boxes. Inside each box, there was a ruby ring. The two rings are only
slightly different from each other. “This is obviously not supposed to be a buy-one-get-one-for-free offer. Ruby rings are just
too expensive for that. Most probably, this is a mistake of some kind,” Mr. Maude said to himself.

【答案】 So, Mr. Maude decided to discuss this matter with his wife. When Mrs. Maude came back to the house
from the garden, Mr. Maude told her what had happened. Together, they decided to contact the service lady. The service lady
was shocked at what the couple told her and talked to her boss about the matter immediately. The boss got online himself and
apologized for such a big mistake and hoped they could send the other one back, to which the couple agreed. The couple
called the delivery service and sent the other ring back to the appointed address.
The day before the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, an unexpected parcel arrived from SM. The
couple didn’t place another order. “Could it be another mistake?” the couple wondered. With curiosity, Mr. Maude opened
the parcel and dug into the packing bubble sheets. He took out a ring box and a note, reading “We hope this small gift can
reach you in time for the anniversary celebration. This ring is not dear, but it’s specially made for Mrs. Maude to express our
appreciation for your honesty.” Mrs. Maude couldn’t be happier, because she now had two rings for the anniversary, one for
love, the other for honesty.

I spent 15 years trying to make it in the music industry. When I was a teenager, I did any odd job to afford time in a
recording studio. I knocked at managers’ doors and sent out demo (录音样带) after demo, but I got nowhere. In 2010, aged
27, I was doing a job in a restaurant when I wrote a song called Dream Goes On. It was a song about never giving up. I just
let out all of my frustrations at the keyboard.
Over the next five years, the music career never materialized but I persisted. Then, in 2019, I uploaded Dream Goes On
to a music-sharing website. I just wanted someone to notice my music.
Later that year, I received an email out of the blue from Music World from South Korea, requesting a license for the
song. They had chosen my song from the millions on the music-sharing website for a theme tune for one of their shows. I
was amazed and negotiated a contract for $5,000 for the use of the song and signed up straight away. I was pretty excited, but
didn’t think anything more would come of it, so I focused on my job in the restaurant.
This February, Music World organized a musical festival in Seoul and my song Dream Goes On was also chosen as the
theme tune for the festival. I watched on YouTube as my song was being played to a huge crowd of people. It was amazing.
After three days of the festival, I was contacted by Music World and they asked if I’d like to go to Seoul to sing Dream
Goes On in a concert. They flew me out there the next day. I was welcomed like a celebrity—everyone I met thought I was a
big name in England. I had to break the news to them that I wasn’t a pop star.

【答案】I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years. Seized by a strong sense of tension, I
stood on the stage, seeing the huge cheers and a sea of lights below the stage. I was lost at the moment, holding the
microphone tightly. I tried my best to collect myself and began to sing my own song which I had practiced hundreds of
times. Looking back the years I had experienced as I sang on the stage, I realized that it is the opportunity that I had beenwaiting for the whole life. I kept myself full of enthusiasm as I was singing on the stage, showing the best to the audience.
After the concert, I had photographers and journalists battling to interview me. With them around me, a long queue of
fans were waiting to have their photograph taken with me. I was like a superstar and that night was like a real dream for me.
I had knocked on doors for years, yet my moment came when the opportunity called me. Life can surprise you. It has
reinspired my passion for music. This has made all the odd jobs and weekends spent in recording studios all worthwhile.

At one time children made May Day baskets to celebrate spring and enjoy the rewards of giving surprising gifts to their
beloved ones. When I was in perhaps the third grade, our class took on such an adventure. For several days, we worked on
creating paper baskets. We cut colorful stripes of construction paper and wove them together, following our teacher, Miss
Anderson. We cut and wove and glued. Then we decorated them with our crayons and more cutting and gluing. Finally, we
fitted paper handles onto the tops so that we could secretly hang our creations on the doors of unsuspecting receivers: surely
our mothers.
We were finished right on time. Miss Anderson brought armloads of flowers for us to use in stuffing our prizes. Lilacs
and tulips and al the colorful flowers of spring. We had to wait until the day was nearly over before we were allowed to
choose the flowers that were just right for our baskets. I chose the biggest, most beautiful blossoms, allowing myself to beselfish for the sake of my mother. Then we fidgeted (烦躁) away what remained of our day, waiting for the clock to tick
down the minutes to our release.
Finally, mercifully, the bell rang! We threw on our coats, gathered our homework and our lunch boxes, tied on our
scarves and then, carefully, we cradled our offerings of love and off we ran to our individual homes! I was so excited! I ran
as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. I paused at the corner of my house, to catch my
breath and savor the moment. Then I glanced down to admire my offering one last time before I hung it lovingly over the
doorknob. Horrors! Shock, dread and depression! My flowers were gone! Apparently, bouncing out on my mad dash home,
all that was left was a sad, messed-up, wrinkled little empty basket! I stood on the doorway and burst into mournful sobbing
tears.

【答案】范文
By and by, my mom came to the door to discover the source of the sorrow. As she let me in and relieved me of my
school things, I tried to relate my horrible dilemma and the depth of my sadness. Mom listened attentively, and her
comforting presence brought a glimmer of hope to my disappointed heart. Having wiped my tears tenderly, she gave me the
scissors fetched from the kitchen and suggested I find some replacement flowers from our garden. This time, I chose smaller
and more resilient flowers, carefully arranging them inside the basket. Seeing each petal radiating the purest colors of spring,
I felt my enthusiasm began to return.
Soon, my newly-decorated basket was ready to be offered again. With the revived basket cradled in my arms, I
embarked on a second journey towards home. Awkwardly, I placed the paper handle over the knob, knocked hesitantly, and
made an embarrassed retreat. Mom slowly came and answered the door. Oh! She was SO surprised! I stepped out of my
hiding place. “Well, Mary!” she exclaimed! “Look what someone left here! Aren’t they lovely! “ With her excitement all my
worries vanished. My pride of giving barely allowed me to maintain the surprise but what mattered was to show mom shewas remembered on this special day.

Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day of
celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights and
decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas decorations in
the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of the darkness of the past
year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as if sparkles
were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung ornaments (装饰物) on
the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep everyone in the spirit. The whole place
looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was looking
forward to overly stuffed clams——a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying another
Christmas together as a family. However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t have any
symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came back they all learned
that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed away after getting lung
infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult to-dos. It
was almost too much to bear.

【答案】But when she returned to the house after the funeral, the twinkling Christmas lights brought her a spark of joy. The
lights were a sign of hope and resilience, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is still beauty and brightness to be
found. Sara realized that her father’s tradition of putting up Christmas lights wasn’t just about making their own home
festive, it was about spreading that joy and hope to others as well.
In the following days, more and more Christmas lights were reappearing on neighbors’ houses. And soon the whole
street was aglow with colorful lights and decorations. Every evening, families would take walks around the neighborhood,
admiring the festive displays and feeling a sense of community and togetherness. The Pascucci family’s tradition had taken
on a life of its own, becoming a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of difficult times. And as the years went on, the
lights continued to shine brightly, bringing joy and comfort to all who saw them.

I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren’t all that
excited about getting any work done.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it. “Let’s pick Hawaii!” said Emma,
“Hawaii has super-cute swimsuits” “True!” Agreed Angela, “Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer
sales happening now.” “Really? Maybe my mother will take me shopping this weekend,” said Emma.
I turned to Bernard, “Which state do you think we should pick?” He shrugged (耸肩), “I don’t care. But what happened
to your hair, Jessica? It looks like caught in a blender (搅拌机)!”
No one in my group seemed very eager to talk about our project, so I went ahead and shared interesting facts I knew
about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one responded, so I pulled out my notebook. I asked Emma to search
for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. But she said she was busy and asked if her picture at a Hawaii hotel pool would do. I
requested Angela and Bernard to find Hawaiian historical information and geography respectively. It turned out they all had
their own business. I was getting the impression that none but me planned to work on the brochure.
Later that day, as I set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed-out. “What’s going on?” she asked. I told
her what happened and sighed, “So I guess the only way to get the brochure done is for me to do it myself.”
“Well,” my mom said with a smile, “when it comes to homework, they don’t necessarily do things you order. Second, I
doubt if you’re responsible for everyone else’s part. Why don’t you check in with your teacher about it?”
When I talked to my teacher the next day, he explained he would grade the assignment partly on the finished brochure
but mostly on our individual work, which made me much less worried.

【答案】At our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. I carefully explained grading rules of
the project and suggested that they take it seriously. “Since we’re a team, we rely on each other to do the best we can.” I told
them, assuring everybody that we could seek solutions together if troubles arose. My sincerity persuaded my teammates.
Emma, Angela, and Bernard all ended up doing their share. The following days witnessed our lively discussion and
cooperation. Shining moments occurred when the girls added fashion information and Bernard put humour to our work. As
we handed in our assignment, I felt my stress relieved.
Finally, we were amazed to receive the grade for our group project. Right as the teacher said, our group work was
graded majorly based on efforts of each member. It was not excellent but good enough to reward what we had prepared and
contributed. Smile spread across my teammates’ faces. They genuinely thanked me as it was my inclusive attitude that
helped them get work done, which I owed to my mom’s golden advice. Next time when you are stuck with teamwork
troubles, don’t shoulder everything but try a friendly communication.

Kindness of Strangers
We rely on a community where helping others is highly appreciated. When we need help, it creates a web that ties us
together.
Once upon a time, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me
from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs?” She had lung disease and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a
day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her
room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes. “Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to climb the stairs.”
“I know, honey. We’ll try to solve the problem.”
My daughter’s words reminded me of an incident. A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电
梯) to us. My daughter could use this stairlift to go up and down stairs by herself without anyone helping her. Hearing the
perfect product, our whole family was very excited and looking forward to it. The stairlift sounded wonderful because it
would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it although John, my husband, even took two jobs to
support the family.
To meet Cassandra’s wish, I got round to ask the charity organization in our community for help once again. They had
lent us a wheelchair before we bought one. Maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. I held my breath while the phone
rang. “Do you have a stairlift I could borrow?” I asked them hopefully. However, they hadn’t, but they promised to call us
right away if they got one.

My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her lifetime, which now stretches to 92
years. We’re not allowed to call her Gran, because it makes her feel old. That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I visited her. She picked up a box. “There you go,” she said.
“You are good at these things, aren’t you?” It was a new phone. Her current mobile was ancient. I was surprised it still
worked.
“Yes, ”I said. “That’s why I ask you. Young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home
and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use it, such as surfing the
Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone.
“Here’s your phone. All ready to use.” For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition,
which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe(滑动屏幕).
“Swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the
right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone on the sofa.
“Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home
when she was angry and upset.

【答案】Possible Version 1
Paragraph 1
“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “No,” Eileen insisted, “I just want my old phone back!”, heading to retrieve (拿回)
her repaired device. Gathering my patience, I stepped forward, hugged my Gran and gently explained that the old phone, just
like an antique, was incapable of providing internet access or sending emails. “Please let go off the old one, and embrace the
brand-new world.” I encouraged her. Empowered by my words, she mustered the courage to give it one more shot. Smoothlyand magically, through the fingerprint recognition, this time, she swiped with the right amount of pressure and located the
email app on the menu.
Paragraph 2
Seeing this, I was not feeling hopeless any more. More surprisingly, a newly received e-mail blew me away, it reading
“Please let go off the old job, just embrace another new opportunity.” The knowing (会意的) chuckle from my wise
grandmother confirmed what I already knew deep down. The familiar yet powerful words lifted the weight from my
shoulders, motivating me to seek out a better career. How wise and strong my Gran was! The words kept echoing in my mind
ever since. Even now, I am constantly reminded of the transformative experience, where I got the lesson— Out with the old,
in with the new!
Possible Version 2
Paragraph 1
“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “You have been making progress, and I have distilled (提炼) some skills from the
former experience.” I added, in an attempt to calm her anger. Such praise seemed always to stimulate people to further
efforts. Although still frowning, grandma wasn’t resistant to trying again. This time, I held her finger, with them poised (稳
定) above the screen, and began to swipe. Despite some glitches (差错), gradually, she achieved mastery — thrilled to send
selfies (自拍) to her friends and even comment on videos on Tik Tok. “Thank you so much my dear. You have done a superb
job!” she praised me, with gratitude and ecstasy (狂喜).
Paragraph 2
Seeing this, I was not feeling hopeless any more. Her little higher pitch (音调) and excitement inspired me. Through the
whole process of teaching, it struck me that if we were in a bind (身处困境), a show of temper did no good. Instead, effort is
the best antidote (解药) to sorrow. If the 92-year-old Eileen could overcome the difficulties and embrace a new digital era,
certainly so could I. No matter how bad the situation seemed, we should always nourish (怀有) a hope in our mind. And the
legendary woman fueled my dream — taking a deep breath of fresh air, I believed there must be a more suitable job
awaiting.

Tucker looked across the backyard of his family’s new home. Just beyond the pine trees, the flat ground pushed upward
into a steep and empty hillside. Dad had promised that the hill would be perfect for sledding—much better than anything the
city had to offer.
Tucker’s brand-new sled rested in the corner of his room. It was perfect: bright blue with red and orange flames racing
up its sides. He was sure it would be super fast. If only it would snow.
He went to play with his brother, but Paul was in his usual spot—seated in the beanbag chair, controller in hands,
working his way through a video game.
Tucker went down to the basement and found his father surrounded by piles of flattened cardboard boxes. Can you play
knights with me, Dad?” Tucker asked.
His father looked over the wall of boxes. “I promised your mom I’d get all these boxes broken down and ready for
recycling. In a little while, pal.”
Tucker fished a small, yellow toy car from his pants pocket and settled down to watch. When he pulled aside a box to
make a ramp(斜坡), he got an idea.
“Dad, can I have some boxes?” Tucker asked.
“Sure, if you clean up when you’re done,” answered Dad.
And some tape, too?” Tucker continued.
His father smiled, grabbed the tape, and tossed it to Tucker. “Have fun.”
Despite the cold, he was sweating from carrying a mountain of cardboard into the backyard. When Paul finished his
game and walked across the backyard, Tucker threw the sticky silver tape roll to him and said, “Oh, brother. I need help with
cutting the tape.”

【答案】 An hour later, though sweating from exhaustion, Tucker and Paul began to work on their artificial ski
run. They had lined pieces of brown cardboard boxes, one after the other, up the hillside, and taped them together until they
had a ramp. It ran from the top of the hillside, past the pine trees, and down to the middle of the backyard. Tucker placed his
sled in place, took a deep breath and waited for Paul to give him a push. “Ready, go!” Paul called out as he pushed Tucker
down the hillside.
Tucker screamed as the sled raced down the slope, faster and faster. Excited and laughing, Tucker flew through the air
and landed at the end of the ramp. He jumped to his feet and raced back up the hillside with his sled. “Your turn!” He gave
the sled to Paul and Paul grabbed the sled and sped off down the hillside, laughing and yelling. As the daylight finally faded
away, it began to snow. “What a timely snow!” Tucker smiled.
