My Mother’s Diamond
It was a beautiful August day, just weeks before school restarted. My mother, my brother and I were sitting in
our front yard, enjoying the afternoon shade of the big tree. My father, Carl, was also at home, working in his
basement office. As we lazed outside, we watched as two girls came towards us on our side of the street; one riding
a bicycle and one holding onto the back of it as she roller-skated behind.
Just as they passed by, the skater lost her balance and went down on the street, right in front of our neighbor’s
house. My mother jumped up quickly and ran toward them to help the fallen skater, and my mother’s foot caught
on an uneven section of the sidewalk. Down she went, injuring her knees, her palms and her chin. We came running
up to her and my brother went to ask my father for help. Meanwhile, I was checking on the skater, who was okay.
The two girls continued on their way, and my mother lay there on the sidewalk, bleeding. My father came
running, and he carried my mother into the house. He set her down on a kitchen chair and got busy cleaning her
wounds with a wet washcloth. As they washed the wounds, my mother looked at her wedding ring on her finger,
only to find the diamond was gone.
My brother and I ran outside to look for the missing diamond. The place she fell on the sidewalk was covered
with small rocks. We had no luck. My mother went out and searched as well, on her painful hands and knees. Many
people spent many hours searching the area over the next several days, all in vain. My mother’s wedding ring,
although not fancy, was priceless to her.
Several months passed. Our neighbor, Mike, was a good friend and had a business buying and reselling cars.
We bought several cars from him over the years because he was so good at it. He liked wearing work boots and his
boots were always muddy wherever he went.

Have you ever accepted others’ help? Do you remember him or her? You may never know how much each
gesture may mean to someone. Sometimes you may think your help is so small, but as a matter of fact, what you do
is of vital significance to others.
When young, I worked as an English teacher in a university. During the summer vacation, I was invited to be
an instructor at a high school leadership camp by a college. Having been highly involved in many campus
activities, I jumped at the opportunity.
About an hour into the first day of camp, immersed (沉浸于) in communications and interactions, I noticed
the boy in black for the first time. Small and skinny, the boy was seated alone, staring into space and his obvious
discomfort and shyness made him appear fragile. The desperate loneliness he revealed almost stopped me from
approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from the senior staff- to stay alert for campers who might fall
left out.
I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole surroundings appeared foreign to him. But I
somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to push him, either. That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my
concerns about him, I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and asked them to pay special
attention and spend time with him when they could. In the meantime, it struck me that I should do what I could to
give him a hand. I argued that he needed a friend, one who could share happiness and sorrow with him. I hoped to
be his friend, his real friend to help him go through the challenging period.

I was a vet in Yorkshire. One day I received a call from Mrs Tompkin asking me to cut the beak (喙) of her
budgie (虎皮鹦鹉). I armed myself with a pair of clippers and stepped onto the narrow strip of pavement which
separated the door from the road. A pleasant-looking red-haired woman answered my knock.
“I’m Mrs Dodds from next door,” she said. “I keep an eye on the old lady. She’s over eighty and lives alone.”
She led me into the cramped little room. “Here’s Mr Herriot coming to see Peter for you,” she said to the old
woman who sat in a corner. Mrs Tompkin nodded and smiled, “Oh that’s good. Poor little fella can hardly eat with
its long beak and I’m worried about him. He’s my only companion, you know.”
“Yes, I understand, Mrs Tompkin.” I looked at the cage by the window with the green budgie perched (栖息)
inside. “These little birds can be wonderful company when they start chattering.”
She laughed, “Yes, but it’s a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he’s lazy! But I just like
having him with me.”
“Of course you do,” I said, “but he certainly needs attention now.”
The beak was greatly overgrown, curving away down till it touched the feathers of the breast. I would be able
to revolutionize his life with one quick snip from my clippers. The way I was feeling this job was right up my
street.
I opened the cage door and slowly inserted my hand.
“Come on, Peter,” I wheedled (哄骗). As I lifted him out, I felt in my pocket with the other hand for the
clippers. Then I stopped.
The tiny head was no longer poking cheekily from my fingers but had fallen loosely to one side. The eyes
were closed. He was dead.
Mrs Dodds and I looked at each other in horror. When I turned my head towards Mrs Tompkin, I was surprised
to see that she was still nodding and smiling.
I drew her neighbor to one side. “Mrs Dodds, how much does she see?”
“Oh, she’s very short-sighted but she’s right vain despite her age. Never would she wear glasses. She’s hard of
hearing, too.”
“Well, look,” I said. My heart was still pounding. “I just don’t know what to do. If I tell her about this, the
shock will be terrible. Anything could happen.”
Mrs Dodds nodded, stricken-faced. “Yes, you’re right. She’s that attached to the little thing.”

Gracie. With a show of some reluctance, Addie gathered her treasures together, and they started at a leisurely pace,
which somehow was gradually accelerated without the apparent notice.
These children had gone farther up the canyon than they had realized. The many charms had attracted them
along and they didn’t feel tired for a long while. Suddenly, a low rumble was heard that increased and seemed to be
rapidly coming in their direction.
“It’s raining! Are there any caves?” “Only way up on the side.” “Let’s take hold of hands and run!” “We’d
have to drop our flowers.” “I don’t care. Hurry!” Away they went, the wind driving the rain right in their faces. The

The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again more insistently this time. Someone just wouldn’t
go away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the call. I was getting very
nervous for there stood a “monster”. The man had big eyes with a twisted body under a heavy overcoat, and his
head leaned slightly forward.
“May I use your phone?” The deep voice came from somewhere back in his throat. Although the request was
polite, his tone was rough. I shrank back as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. He took a
step forward and further asked me for permission. Again, I refused his request. Thinking he might try and force his
way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend our home. Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of
her tail wagging.
“You’re crazy, Lassie,” I thought to myself. But there was no denying sign. Based on past experience, I trusted
her judgement. The man explained to me that he lost his phone by accident.

Soon the first Thursday came. Principal Peters got to his office as usual just right next to the teachers' lounge.
Hearing popping sound, he smiled, for it meant the promise of the potential garden. But it was REALLY loud. He
wrapped a scarf around his head to block his ears. When the first Thursday was over, he breathed a sigh of relief.
But the next Thursday, popping sound happened again. This time, he had brought earplugs. The day, it seemed,
would last forever. But for the kids' garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
The following Thursdays witnessed Principal Peters attempting to pile gym mats against his office walls and
asking the fifth grade to practice for their concert in the hallway outside his office. The "unbearable" popping sound
seemed to have taken root in his head! But for the kids' vegetable garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
On the 11th Thursday, he went to the teachers' lounge again to see how much money was still needed. Seeing
the Principal coming with a hard-hidden painful expression, the students responded cheerfully, “Only with 41
dollars our garden dream will come true.” Hearing this, Principal Peters left without saying anything.
