Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It’s true. I would be a different
person if my mom hadn’t turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson
about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my
mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the
family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained
about not having what other kids owned, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so
got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our
allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long
it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent
cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not
replaced.
It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it
was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers: The basket winked at meand I knew—I had to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it?
I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was
the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom,
please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

Two years ago, Caleb was confined (限制) to a wheelchair after an accident. He wanted to be
a great basketball player when he grew up, but his wheelchair weakened his confidence in his
ability to do so.One morning, he told his mother Linda that he had to give up his dreams because he was
disabled. Hearing it, Linda held Caleb’s hands and told him not to think of himself in that way
again.
“You can realize your dreams just like other kids,” Linda said. And she promised she’d be
there to support Caleb.
From that day on, after Caleb’s classes, Linda would take him to the school’s basketball
court, and they would play basketball together. When Caleb didn’t score a basket, he’d become a
little discouraged, but Linda always encouraged him to try his best.
One warm Sunday, Caleb and his mom played basketball in a local park. When Caleb finally
scored a basket, he shouted, “I did it, Mom! I scored a basket!” Proud of Caleb, Linda asked Caleb
to try it again and promised that days later she’d let him sign up for a basketball training club.
Just then, a voice cut her off, “Don’t have too much confidence in yourself! After all, you’re
locked in that wheelchair!” Caleb’s smile disappeared when he noticed a group of unknown boys
standing near the court s entrance. “This game isn’t for people like you!” shouted another. “Just go
home and play board games!”
Linda was angry. She shouted back. “Who are you to tell my son what he should be doing?
Just get lost!” The group of boys didn’t leave. They just stepped into the court, playing basketball
to enjoy themselves. They ignored Linda and Caleb, not laughing at Caleb any longer although
they still thought Caleb wouldn’t make any achievement in basketball no matter how hard he tried.
And Caleb was already upset by the group of boys’ hurtful words. Tears welled up in his
eyes. “Could we please go home, Mom? I don’t want to be here any longer,” he whispered.

Broken seashells
It was the summer in mid-July at the Jersey shore. My four-year-old son Will and I just loved
heading off to the beach just before dinner when the rest of the vacationers seemed to be leaving
for the day. The sun was still hot then and shining brightly.
Bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our adventure. Will would run so quickly to the
edge of the water and be soaked before I got there, laughing as the waves crashed and nearly
knocked him down. We usually walked along the edge of the water, looking for seashells to fill
our red sandcastle-shaped bucket. Some days, the bucket was full, and other days just a few shells
made it into the bucket.
On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore. Will
began picking up whatever shells he saw lying in the sand. After a while, I peered into the bucket
and saw nothing but broken shells. “Will, all of these shells are broken and no good. You need to
find shells like this,” I explained, as I held up a perfectly shaped clamshell. Will gave me a
puzzled look and continued on his way, gathering whatever shells he came across and dropping
them into the bucket.
I continued my search for some time, and then stopped to watch him drop more broken shells
into the bucket. Again, I stopped, but this time I asked in a stricter voice, “Will, why do you insist
on filling our bucket with shells that are broken?” He looked up at me through his glasses with his
big blue eyes and replied, “Mom, there are way more shells on the beach that are broken than
perfect ones that you are searching for. We’ll get the bucket filled faster with the broken ones.”
True, I thought, but who wants a bucketful of broken shells? Will stared at me as if he knew what I
was thinking. “Mom, these shells are broken, but they are still beautiful,” he explained.

Broken Shells
It was a warm summer afternoon at the Jersey shore. My four-year-old son and I just loved
walking along the beach just before dinner. With a bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our

I remember the days not so long ago when a trip to the beach was just unbearable for my
little boy. My son, Will, was diagnosed with ASD (孤独症). His sensitivities to sights, sounds, and
touches would prevent us from enjoying everyday activities. The beach is now one of his favorite
places to visit.
Presently, we are able to walk along the edge of the water almost daily in the summer
months, looking for seashells to fill our bucket. On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too

Standing outside the cave entrance, Grandfather admired the green-carpeted hills, but Lin
hated the cave. He had come here today only because of Grandfather.
Grandfather preferred to use guano, the waste matter of bats, to fertilize (施肥) his crops. But
he was too weak to do the whole job. He could gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the
basket, but he needed Lin to carry it home in the wooden cart.
Grandfather took a shovel (铲子) and flashlight from the cart. “Change your mind and come
inside with me?” he asked Lin. “It won’t happen again, Lin,” Grandfather promised. “Last time it
was my mistake. We shouldn’t have waited until nearly dusk (黄昏) to go inside. I know that the
bats fly out of the cave at dusk.” That was exactly what had happened on the Terrible Day of the
Bats. As Lin had stood at the cave entrance, a crowd of black bats had erupted from it. Lin had
been terrified.
“Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather had said. “Besides, you scared them as much as they did
you.”
But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats. “I can’t
go in there,” he told Grandfather now.
“OK,” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave, he called over his shoulder, “I’ll be out
in no time.” Lin parked the cart and glanced at the shovel and flashlight inside it. His shovel and
flashlight. He had used them before. Now they only reminded him of his fear.
Lin turned his back on the cart and walked down to the river. Grandfather would call when he
was finished. Until then, Lin would put as much distance as possible between himself and the
cave.
Lin watched two little birds splashing about at the edge of the river. He enjoyed the peaceful
view over the vast river surface. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “no time” had turned into a
long time.
Lin hurried up the hill toward the cave. The cart was still there. Grandfather was still inside.
Something had gone wrong.

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As
I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the
storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still
had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all.
About two weeks aga, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown.
Baby-Gil had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and
worked in another city. I was saying with fends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten
out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up.
My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant
he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or
been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little
more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all
on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my
house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left
off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me
to the shelter.
At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My
eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a roomfarther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad
said. “Your cat wouldn’t be in there.”

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I
said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only
my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me
to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts.
No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply:
“Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at
this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston
who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were
coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and
unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did
he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like
Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to
correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I evenread a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great.
Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought
of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

The chain of kindness
The rain was coming down so hard that each drop seemed to explode as it hit the roof of the
car. Tom looked out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road.
The rain beatdown continuously and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car.
Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked
down at his thin, broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair start to wash over him.
Suddenly, a loud noise shook him out of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump
down the road. “Great,” he thought, “a flat tyre.”
With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to as top, resting his head on the steering wheel,
defeated! After a few seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he
could see a light twinkling in the blackness.
When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the
doorway. He pulled up and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home?” he shouted over
the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre and I need help.”
“Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returnedwith an old man. The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him.
Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are
paralyzed.” The words came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that
he needed help from this weak old man in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply
nodded.
The old man and the little girl concentrated on their work and the rain was soaking them.
Once again, Tom couldn’t help but feel he was useless. Soon the old man stepped to the window.
“You’re all set,” he said. Tom handed some money to the old man, but he made no move to take it.

Our church congregation (集会) in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial
difficulties without making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box
with only the name of the receiver on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those
members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. Both of us lost jobs at
that time and there was little hope that we could be employed within a short time. Of course, out
of self-esteem, we did hot talk about our financial difficulty with anyone else. The only reason our
children knew was that we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware ofthe extent of our need, nor of how much then father and I were suffering because of it. We did not
want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
With time going by, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we
would have to look for outside help. In that cold winter, just as we reached the point of despair,
our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. You couldn’t imagine
how overjoyed we were on receiving such a very substantial amount of money, which was enough
to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a
generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful. In this way, we could survive
daring this tough period with the money. Besides, we needn’t worry about our son’s university
tuition, that is, he needn’t apply for any loan (贷款) because he had taken a part-time job and
worked hard to earn some money since he was nine years old. He had been a paper carrier for The
Toronto Star, a car washer, a dishwasher and so on. He had been careful for his small earnings so
we had trusted him to leave all his wages with him instead of putting it into the bank towards his
education.

I like staying overnight at my Gramma’s house — that is, until Gramma starts telling me how
wonderful my cousin Maya is. Then it’s Maya this and Maya that until I don’t ever want to hear
another word about her.
That’s why I wasn’t too excited when Gramma called me on the phone to “come on over and
bring your pajamas.” When I got there, it was worse than I’d expected. There, in Grandpa’s big
leather rocker, sat Maya, all dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she’djust been to a party.
“Surprise, Kristen!” Gramma said. “Your cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from
the East Coast on business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon. “Gramma chattered away
about how excited she’d been for this surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know
each other better.
I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling
and nodding as if I’d been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya.
Grandpa’s chair squawked (咯咯叫) as Maya rocked back and forth. It’s the chair I like best in the
house, the one I usually sit in. I sat down on the sofa across from her.
Shortly, Gramma went off to the kitchen to “see about some lunch,” she’d said. That left me
stuck in the living room with rocking Maya.
She was still small but taller than I’d remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She
was good at small talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But
I could tell that she didn’t really think so. The last time she was here, we’d had hours of fun
together building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows.
After that, I’d heard about her only through Gramma’s tales. Maya taking piano lessons.
Maya learning math. Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest
haircut and a fancy dress.

Growing up, I was always around my grandma Meredith. She was the one who originally
inspired my love for cooking and my dream of becoming a chef. Yet, one day I received a text thatwould turn my whole life around: “Grandma is seriously ill”, the text read. “We need your help in
assisting with her care.”
Without a second of hesitation, I agreed to travel back home. Thankfully, my boss at the
restaurant let me take unpaid leave for the next several months so I could come home to help out
with grandma. After driving across several states, I finally got back to our family home in West
Virginia. Yet, what I saw was really hard for me to bear. The Meredith I saw then was not the
lively, joyful Meredith I had seen while I was growing up.
“Tony!” she called to me from her bed, “It’s so good to see you!”
“Grandma,” I sighed, “I’m not Tony. That’s dad, your son. I’m Hank.”
This was the start of a months-long journey of helping out around the house—cooking,
cleaning, and, most of all, keeping grandma in good health and good spirits.
Every day, I cooked delicious food to keep everyone’s spirits high. But, secretly, I hoped that
cooking some dishes that we had made together in my. Childhood would somehow help get
grandma’s memory of me back, if just for a moment.
Stews (炖菜), chops (排骨), roasts— I served all of these to grandma and my parents around
the clock. When I wasn’t taking grandma out for a walk in her wheel chair or changing her bed
sheets, I was cooking. I had cooked for celebrities while at the restaurant in New York City, but
never had I poured my heart out into my meals than I did then for grandma. However, it didn’t
work at all.
