It’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson about the value of efforts. My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced. It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers: The basket winked at me 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】and I knew—I had to have it. “It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.” I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate. “You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.” “By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?” “There might be another way,” she said. “I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________ Finally, I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others’ bikes! _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________ 【答案】 “I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained. I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I could’t find. Each day, I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night, I crossed off another day on the calender as I counted down the days. As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn’t bother me. The basket was worth it. The anticipation grew stronger as the days 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】ticked down. Finally, I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others’ bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my Mom. Seeing my sad face, she gently wiped away my tears. Holding my little face in her warmth hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today. “Your basket is not the same basket. It’s unique because it was obtained by all your worthwhile effort and waiting.” 词汇激活 行为类 ①完成:finish/complete ②回家:go home/return home ③告知:report/tell/inform 情绪类 ①震惊的:shocked/astonished ②生气的:upset/annoyed 【点睛】[高分句型1] As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. He wanted to be a great basketball player when he grew up, but his wheelchair weakened his confidence in his 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】ability to do so. One morning, he told his mother Linda that he had to give up his dreams because he was disabled. Hearing it, Linda held Caleb’s hands and told him not to think of himself in that way again. “You can realize your dreams just like other kids,” Linda said. And she promised she’d be there to support Caleb. From that day on, after Caleb’s classes, Linda would take him to the school’s basketball court, and they would play basketball together. When Caleb didn’t score a basket, he’d become a little discouraged, but Linda always encouraged him to try his best. One warm Sunday, Caleb and his mom played basketball in a local park. When Caleb finally scored a basket, he shouted, “I did it, Mom! I scored a basket!” Proud of Caleb, Linda asked Caleb to try it again and promised that days later she’d let him sign up for a basketball training club. Just then, a voice cut her off, “Don’t have too much confidence in yourself! After all, you’re locked in that wheelchair!” Caleb’s smile disappeared when he noticed a group of unknown boys standing near the court s entrance. “This game isn’t for people like you!” shouted another. “Just go home and play board games!” Linda was angry. She shouted back. “Who are you to tell my son what he should be doing? Just get lost!” The group of boys didn’t leave. They just stepped into the court, playing basketball to enjoy themselves. They ignored Linda and Caleb, not laughing at Caleb any longer although they still thought Caleb wouldn’t make any achievement in basketball no matter how hard he tried. And Caleb was already upset by the group of boys’ hurtful words. Tears welled up in his eyes. “Could we please go home, Mom? I don’t want to be here any longer,” he whispered. Linda looked at the basketball, thinking about how to comfort and encourage Caleb. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Caleb finally became cheerful and decided not to give up practicing basketball. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】_____________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Linda looked at the basketball, thinking about how to comfort and encourage Caleb. Soon, she knelt next to him, saying, “Nobody can prevent you pursuing your dream. Let’s keep practicing!” She handed him the ball and asked him to try to throw it into the ring. But Caleb didn’t respond. “Don’t give up!” Linda added. “You’ve done it before, and you can do it again!” Noticing that the group of boys continued ignoring them and not troubling them, Caleb gathered up his courage and tried again. He scored a basket successfully! Caleb finally became cheerful and decided not to give up practicing basketball. “Great!” Linda cried and hugged him. Five days after that day, Caleb signed up for a basketball training club, where the coach was very friendly and patient. With time going by, Caleb showed a great talent for basketball, which made him try harder to practice. His skills gradually improved a lot and his body also became much stronger. Finally, he received a scholarship and at-tended a well- known college featuring sports. He wished someday he’d attend the Olympics. 词汇激活 行为类 追求:pursue/run after 回答:respond /reply 注意到:notice/note 情绪类 耐心:patient /with patience 有天赋:show a great talent for /be talented 【点睛】[高分句型1] Noticing that the group of boys continued ignoring them and not troubling them, Caleb gathered up his courage and tried again. My four-year-old son Will and I just loved heading off to the beach just before dinner when the rest of the vacationers seemed to be leaving for the day. The sun was still hot then and shining brightly. Bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our adventure. Will would run so quickly to the edge of the water and be soaked before I got there, laughing as the waves crashed and nearly knocked him down. We usually walked along the edge of the water, looking for seashells to fill our red sandcastle-shaped bucket. Some days, the bucket was full, and other days just a few shells made it into the bucket. On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore. Will began picking up whatever shells he saw lying in the sand. After a while, I peered into the bucket and saw nothing but broken shells. “Will, all of these shells are broken and no good. You need to find shells like this,” I explained, as I held up a perfectly shaped clamshell. Will gave me a puzzled look and continued on his way, gathering whatever shells he came across and dropping them into the bucket. I continued my search for some time, and then stopped to watch him drop more broken shells into the bucket. Again, I stopped, but this time I asked in a stricter voice, “Will, why do you insist on filling our bucket with shells that are broken?” He looked up at me through his glasses with his big blue eyes and replied, “Mom, there are way more shells on the beach that are broken than perfect ones that you are searching for. We’ll get the bucket filled faster with the broken ones.” True, I thought, but who wants a bucketful of broken shells? Will stared at me as if he knew what I was thinking. “Mom, these shells are broken, but they are still beautiful,” he explained. He began pulling the shells from the bucket and commenting on their uniqueness. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ Back home, I decided to preserve the moment of realization with Will. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】_______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 He began pulling the shells from the bucket and commenting on their uniqueness. “Look! This one looks like a heart when you hold it this way!” he exclaimed, showing me a shell with an uneven shape. One after another, he introduced to me each broken seashell he had collected, his face lighting up with wonder and appreciation. “Each one of them is indeed one of a kind, darling.” I watched as he arranged the shells in the sand, admiring their extraordinary beauty. It dawned on me that he saw perfection where I saw imperfection. Back home, I decided to preserve the moment of realization with Will. We washed the sand off each shell carefully with toothbrushes, and then displayed them carefully in the yard. Looking at the “broken shell garden”, Will smiled with great satisfaction. It is a constant reminder that we are all broken in some way, but we still possess beauty and uniqueness beyond belief. As for me, that day on the beach was not just about collecting shells; it was also about my four-year-old teaching me an invaluable lesson that beauty comes in many forms. 词汇激活 行为类 ①呼喊: exclaim/shout out/yell ②收集:collect/gather ③展示:show/display/showcase 情绪类 ①欣赏:appreciation/admiration/enjoyment ②难以置信的:beyond belief/incredible/unbelievable 【点睛】[高分句型1] It dawned on me that he saw perfection where I saw imperfection.(that引 导的主语从句) 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】[高分句型 2] As for me, that day on the beach was not just about collecting shells; it was also about my four-year-old teaching me an invaluable lesson that beauty comes in many forms.(that 引导的同位语从句) 3.(2023·湖南长沙·长沙一中校考二模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续 写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Broken Shells It was a warm summer afternoon at the Jersey shore. My four-year-old son and I just loved walking along the beach just before dinner. With a bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our adventure. I remember the days not so long ago when a trip to the beach was just unbearable for my little boy. My son, Will, was diagnosed with ASD (孤独症). His sensitivities to sights, sounds, and touches would prevent us from enjoying everyday activities. The beach is now one of his favorite places to visit. Presently, we are able to walk along the edge of the water almost daily in the summer months, looking for seashells to fill our bucket. On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore. Will began picking up whatever shells he saw lying in the sand After a while, I looked into the bucket and saw nothing but broken shells. “Will,” I said, “all of these shells are broken and no good.” “You need to find shells like this,” I continued, as I held up a perfectly shaped shell. Will stared at me as if he knew what I was thinking. “Mom, these shells are broken. but they are still beautiful.” he added. Just then he began commenting on different shells’ uniqueness. “It has the color purple on it. Mom, none of yours have purple on them. It reminds me of a clown (小丑). This one is like the sun, and these ones are like butterfly wings,” he said with such pride. Touched by what he said, I realized changes are to be made to our shell trip. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】__________________________________________________________ Back home with great joy, we agreed to make more shell trips and build a “broken shell garden”. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Touched by what he said, I realized changes are to be made to our shell trip. My eyes filling with tears, I reached my hand into the bucket and began to take out the few perfect shells I had collected and placed them back on the beach. Will and I walked along the beach, collecting only broken shells in our bucket and admiring their beauty. His eyes sparked with joy, which I had never seen. Before we knew it, the bucket was half full. Meanwhile, the tide began to rise and we had to leave the lovely beach. Back home with great joy, we agreed to make more shell trips and build a “broken shell garden”. It is a constant reminder of how none of us are perfect. We are all broken in some way, but we still possess beauty and uniqueness beyond belief. Now, whenever we go to the beach, we gather only broken shells. Yes, it’s true, while the perfect shells are few and far between, there are many more broken shells left lying on the beach that go unnoticed. If we take the time to look more closely at the broken shells, we can find beauty in their imperfections, and maybe even learn something about ourselves. 词汇激活 行为类 ①拿出,掏出:take out/pull out ②欣赏:admire/enjoy/appreciate ③拥有:have/possess/own 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】情绪类 ①.喜悦:spark with joy /light up/show happiness ②.感动流泪:my eyes filling with tears/moved to tears 【点睛】[高分句型1]. He could gather the guano and bring it out of the cave in the basket, but he needed Lin to carry it home in the wooden cart. Grandfather took a shovel (铲子) and flashlight from the cart. “Change your mind and come inside with me?” he asked Lin. “It won’t happen again, Lin,” Grandfather promised. “Last time it was my mistake. We shouldn’t have waited until nearly dusk (黄昏) to go inside. I know that the bats fly out of the cave at dusk.” That was exactly what had happened on the Terrible Day of the Bats. As Lin had stood at the cave entrance, a crowd of black bats had erupted from it. Lin had been terrified. “Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather had said. “Besides, you scared them as much as they did you.” But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt in that black cloud of bats. “I can’t go in there,” he told Grandfather now. “OK,” Grandfather said. As he started into the cave, he called over his shoulder, “I’ll be out in no time.” Lin parked the cart and glanced at the shovel and flashlight inside it. His shovel and flashlight. He had used them before. Now they only reminded him of his fear. Lin turned his back on the cart and walked down to the river. Grandfather would call when he was finished. Until then, Lin would put as much distance as possible between himself and the cave. Lin watched two little birds splashing about at the edge of the river. He enjoyed the peaceful view over the vast river surface. Then Lin realized that Grandfather’s “no time” had turned into a long time. Lin hurried up the hill toward the cave. The cart was still there. Grandfather was still inside. Something had gone wrong. Lin looked around but found no one he could turn to for help. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ In the dark cave, Lin gathered his courage and yelled again, “Grandfather!” _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Lin looked around but found no one he could turn to for help. Panic set in as he realized that something terrible might have happened to Grandfather. He called out his name, but there was no response. Lin’s mind raced with fear and worry. He knew he had to go into the cave, but the thought of facing his fear was almost paralyzing. After taking a few deep breaths, he summoned all his courage and stepped towards the entrance. In the dark cave, Lin gathered his courage and yelled again, “Grandfather!” This time, the response was louder. Lin followed the sound until he reached a narrow passage. His flashlight beam revealed that Grandfather was trapped between two large rocks. Lin’s heart sank as he realized the situation was more serious than he had thought. Grandfather’s leg was pinned, and he was in obvious pain. Lin knew that he had to act fast to free him. Finally, Lin heard the sound of approaching footsteps. The rescue team had arrived. They quickly assessed the situation and worked to free Grandfather. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抓到:summon courage/ muster up courage ②到达:reach/get to/arrive at ③陷入:be trapped /be stuck /be caught 情绪类 ①害怕:fear/fright ②担忧:worry/anxiety 【点睛】【高分句型1】He knew he had to go into the cave, but the thought of facing his fear was almost paralyzing.(运用了省略that的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Lin’s heart sank as he realized the situation was more serious than he had thought. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all. About two weeks aga, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown. Baby-Gil had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in another city. I was saying with fends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up. My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith! Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day. Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter. At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. Suddenly, there came a familiar meow. I followed the sound and my eyes fell on a little cat with big green eyes. She was skinnier than I remembered, but it was Baby-Girl! My eye swelled up with tears. I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close as Dad looked on. “There’s just no way…,” he mumbled. The shelter staff were skeptical too, saying the cat had just been brought in during the morning storm. Sensing their doubts, I was ready to prove she was my cat. I grabbed the carrier. I’d trained Baby- Girl to walk inside the carrier. Sure enough, when she was letdown, she made a dash for the carrier and rushed right inside. I was overjoyed to have her back. It was a miracle that she had managed to survive on her own for so long, and I was filled with admiration for her strength and determination. I thanked my lucky stars that I had never given up hope, and that I had come back to the shelter one last time. 词汇激活 行为类 ①喃喃自语:mumbled/mutter/maunder/mussitate ②怀疑:skeptical/disbelieving/suspicious ③抓住:grabbed/capture/catch/seize 情绪类 ①狂喜的:overjoyed/delighted/joyful/elated ②眼泪:tears/weeping/sobbing/crying 【点睛】[高分句型1]. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. 资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. Both of us lost jobs at that time and there was little hope that we could be employed within a short time. With time going by, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. What came to my mind was a sandwich. When I was a child, my grandma always made me a sandwich for breakfast. It was the most delicious sandwich in the world. Since then, I have dreamt about being a chef. The sandwich made by my grandma has two layers, the first layer with ham, and the second layer with vegetable salad. So I made a sandwich the way my grandmother did. Then I gave it to my grandma, hoping it could help her remember me. After taking a few bites, grandma finally called out my name-my actual name. I was so excited that I hugged her, saying “Finally, you remember me!” “My dear, you come back. I miss you so much.” My grandma said happily with tears rolling down her face. In the following days, I accompanied my grandma and took care of her. Soon she recovered. It is not only the sandwich but also grandma’s love for me that helps her recover. 词汇激活行为类 ①某人想起来:come to one’s mind/occur to sb. ②梦想着:dream about/dream of ③拥抱某人:hug sb./take sb. in arms 情绪类 ①激动的:excited/thrilled ②高兴地:happily/gladly 【点睛】[高分句型 1] When I was a child, my grandma always made me a sandwich for breakfast.(由连接词when引导的状语从句) [高分句型2] I was so excited that I hugged her, saying “Finally, you remember me!”(由so...that 引导的状语从句) [高分句型3] It is not only the sandwich but also grandma’s love for me that helps her recover.
