I took my 9-year-old daughter Susan and 5-year-old son Robbie, to the shopping centre. As we got there, we
saw a big sign that said, “Petting Zoo”. The kids jumped up and asked, “Daddy, can we go?”
Both my wife and I were out of work. However, I said, “Sure”, giving them a quarter each. They went away,
leaving only fifty cents left in my pocket.
A petting zoo is made up of a hundred of little baby animals of all kinds. Kids pay their money and stay in the
enclosure (围场) pleased with the little animals while their parents shop.
A few minutes later, I saw Susan walking along behind me. I was surprised and asked what was wrong.
She said sadly, “Well, Daddy, a ticket for petting zoo costs fifty cents. So I gave Robbie my quarter.” Then she
said the most beautiful thing I ever heard. She repeated the family motto (座右铭), which is “Love is Action!”
I knew clearly no one loves little animals than Susan. She had watched both my wife and me do and say “Love
is Action!” for years, and now she had put it into her lifestyle. It had become part of her, because she knew the whole
family motto. It’s not only “Love is Action”; it’s “Love is SACRIFICIAL (牺牲的) Action!” Love always pays a
price.
I was moved. We went back to the petting zoo. Susan stood with her hands and chin (下巴) resting on the fence
and just watched Robbie go crazy petting and feeding the animals. I had fifty cents burning a hole in my pocket. I
put my hand into my pocket and took out the money. Sure, I must do that!

Nervously, but for courage (勇气), I hold the rope of my guide dog Coco when we pass by my neighbor’s yard.
Walking by Mr. Smith’s yard is the best part of our morning walk … and also the worst.
The sweet smell of the roses in Mr. Smith’s yard is the best. The worst comes from Mr. Smith. “Hello, Mr.
Smith.” I greet him as usual, and he doesn’t reply (回复).
But I know he’s there and he closes the gate quickly.
I wonder why Mr. Smith ignores me. Why can’t two people who like roses be friends? It’s a question to me.
Maybe because I’m blind? Disabilities sometimes scare people. But I heard him playing chess with Jimmy
who’s in a wheelchair.
Maybe local people dislike foreigners? But he and my brother Joe are friends. Maybe because I’m a girl? But
when my friend Helen greets him, he says hello to her warmly.
So Mr. Smith likes Jimmy, Joe and Helen, but not me and Coco!
Suddenly I come to know why he doesn’t talk to me.
I tie Coco to a tree, feel my way and move slowly. His gate opens. “Jenny! Be careful!”Mr. Smith shouts
worriedly and takes me by the arm.
“Mr. Smith, I thought you didn’t like me. But now I guess it’s because of Coco—you are afraid of her?” I ask
him in a low voice.
“Yeah, Jenny. Your Coco is a very… big dog.” Mr. Smith laughs.
“Your fear of Coco may be big, but our friendship is bigger. I’ll help you.” …

Kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might be helping themselves. That’s according to
a recent study in JAMA Network Open. It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected
with better wellness among children and teens.
The study compared kids who took part in community service with those who didn’t. Kids who volunteered
were 66% more likely to be considered “growing well” or doing well in general. And kids aged 12 and older who
volunteered were 25% less likely to have worries than those who didn’t. The findings come from survey data (数据).
Parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17 took the survey.
Studies like this have limitations (局限性). The data can’t prove cause and effect. So it’s not possible to say for
sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more
likely to have the energy to volunteer. But the data comes at an important time. More than 40% of high school
students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021.
So there’s a clear need for mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such
resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that result. Some research has also found connections between
volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And
it makes them feel connected to those around them. So give it a try, for your health.
1. What is the purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A.To give readers some advice. B.To ask readers to volunteer in schools.
C.To show the writer’s problems. D.To introduce the result of a new study.
2. How does the writer develop the text in Paragraph 2?
A.By listing some numbers. B.By telling some stories.
C.By giving some examples. D.By raising some questions.
3. Suppose there are 1,000 students in a high school, how many of them felt sad in 2021?
A.More than 100. B.More than 200.
C.More than 300. D.More than 400.
4. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A.Volunteering is good to health for all ages.
B.Physical health has nothing to do with volunteering.
C.Students more easily experience feeling of hopeless.
D.Kids like to spend more time volunteering in their schools.

Chris is not a traditional explorer—he usually works in an office for a large organization. Yet his job can
sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (国界). MSF sends trained
doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to
many places to organize programs that help people.
At the moment, there are over 27, 000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The
organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be
prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with
experience in tropical (热带的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’S work is in Africa. When MSF
accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might
be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the
experience you gain is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an
open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made
a real difference to people’s lives.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。

2. When does MSF send trained doctors all over the world to help people?
3. How many medical staff are taking part in MSF projects and tasks?

In the late 1800s, most of the people from a small, poor village in Italy called Roseto Valfortore moved to a new
town in the USA. This town was started in 1887 in Pennsylvania (宾夕法尼亚州) by a man called Nicola Rosato. He
named the town Roscto after his own village. The Italian immigrants who came to live there were hoping to find a
b 1 life.
In the 1960s, a doctor named Stewart Wolf discovered something very s 2 in Roseto. After doing a study on
everyone who lived there, he found that they were generally much healthier than the rest of the country. The number
of people in the town dying from heart disease was half the national average. In fact, almost no one younger than 55
years of age died of a heart attack. And the death rate (率) from the c 3 was 35% lower than the national
average. Many people simply died of old age.
So, what was the Rosetans’s 4 ? Wolf’s findings showed that it certainly wasn’t their diet. They ate a lot of
fatty food and many were very overweight. In addition, they worked long hours in jobs that were very hard on their
bodies. There was no clear medical explanation for w 5 they were so healthy. The town itself was a closely
connected community of families. Most children, parents, and grandparents lived under one roof, and everyone got
together in church, festivals, and social activities. Thus, researchers c 6 that the Rosetans’ excellent health came
from the town itself.
The study shows that having a close connections with others can help people reduce the everyday stresses that
are bad for one’s health. Scientists finally named the i 7 of family and social life on health “the Roseto Effect”.
Do you think the Roseto Effect really works?
