Women are equally responsible for the growth of a free, modern society. Here’s a look at some outstanding women
who made great contributions to world history.
Maria Sibylla Merian
Today, children can explain how a caterpillar (毛毛虫) turns into a butterfly (蝴蝶). But there was a time when no one
knew this --not even scientists. Thanks to Maria Sibylla Merian, we know the truth about these beautiful winged insects.
Merian was fascinated by insects, and she began collecting, studying, and drawing them when she was as young as 13. Itwas through her study of caterpillars that she discovered the truth about their life cycles.
Beryl Markham
Beryl Markham was quite incredible in not just aviation (航空) but several other industries, including horse racing. In
1936, at age 33, Markham became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic alone from the east to the west, nonstop. The
pilot played a role in the classic best-selling novel and film, Out of Africa, and had many biographies penned about her
talents and life.
Madam C. J. Walker
Madam C J. Walker developed a condition that caused her to lose her hair, and with it, an interest in hair care. She
began working for black hair care entrepreneur (企业家) Annie Turnbo Malone. Eventually, Walker began making and
marketing her own hair care products designed for African-American women. Her company developed into the successful
Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. She is widely recognized as America’s first black female self-made
millionaire.
Hedy Lamarr
You might know Hedy Lamarr from the silver screen; she starred in many films. But her film career is far from her
only achievement; she was also a brilliant inventor. In 1942, she received a patent for an invention that could change radio
signal frequencies. It paved the way for much of the wireless technology we use today.
21.Who had a lot of enthusiasm for the study of insects?
A.Hedy Lamarr B.Beryl Markham
C.Madam C.J. Walker D.Maria Sibylla Merian
22.What made Madam C.J. Walker begin to focus on the hair care?
A.Her losing her hair. B.A type of hair care product.
C.Annie Turnbo Malone’s success. D.Her wish to help African Americans.
23.What is special about Hedy Lamar?
A.She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic alone.

Teachers often can fall into the trap of teaching content, paying no attention to children. Many of us have the attitude
that “we will put the information out there, and if they don’t get it, they are to blame.”
Several years ago, I had a student named Jeremy in 12th - grade English, in which British literature was taught. I
struggled to find ways to make the content interesting. Jeremy didn’t care. Though Jeremy was classified as. gifted, he slept
in class every day. I began to get really frustrated. I even began to dislike him.
High school teachers sometimes develop a hands-off attitude. I thought, “OK, Jeremy, if you want to fail my class,
fine. I’ve tried everything.” As time went on, I ignored Jeremy. I didn’t ask him questions, or even make eye contact with
him.
By accident, I found that Jeremy was capable of much more. One day, I went to the broadcasting classroom to edit a
video. On this day, several students were working on an assignment. Then I heard a voice I recognized. I looked up and saw
Jeremy was teaching his classmates energetically how to film. My first thought was that Jeremy must have a twin! Suddenly
he realized I was sitting in the corner.
Our eyes met. “Mrs. Duff?” he asked with surprise. “You know how to edit video?”“Yes. I had no idea you were a videographer!” At this, he smiled with pride and explained the project his group was
working on. It was clear he had earned his classmates’ respect. And it was suddenly clear to me that I had not really made an
effort to know Jeremy at all.
What happened next was amazing. In class, Jeremy stayed awake and completed his work. He passed my class with a
B.
What happened? When Jeremy encountered me outside English class, it changed his perspective of me. He realized I
wasn’t just some odd lady trying to force him to learn British poetry. Equally important, my perspective about him changed.
He wasn’t just the kid who slept in my class.
I’m not proud that I didn’t make a better effort to know Jeremy before the encounter in the broadcast room. I told
myself I had tried everything, but I had not stepped outside of my little English world at all.
24.What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To draw readers’ interest. B.To introduce the author’s idea.
C.To remind teachers of teaching traps. D.To ask students to shift learning focus.
25.What did the author do when Jeremy showed lasting boredom in her class?
A.She blamed herself. B.She gave up on him.
C.She kept on persuading him. D.She made teaching more interesting.
26.How did the author feel when she saw Jeremy as a videographer?
A.Proud. B.Relaxed.
C.Regretful. D.Rewarded.
27.What does the author intend to tell us?
A.Why to build a common perspective.
B.How to transform a student’s negative behavior.
C.Teachers should reach students in individual ways.
D.Students will eventually connect with their teachers.

The most successful inventions have one thing in common: creativity. But keeping creativity can be difficult. Previous
research has focused on the benefits of awards or recognition, but Professor Markus Baer has found something different.
To study the effect receiving an award or recognition had on producers, Baer and other researchers conducted a study
of 224 first-time cookbook authors in the United Kingdom. It was found that only about 50% of cookbook authors with a
successful debut went on to produce a second cookbook. Interestingly, they also discovered that the more creative the first
cookbook was, the less likely the author was to produce a second cookbook.
“In our study, we found that people who develop creative ideas and receive awards for them start to see themselves as a
creative person. This new-found identity is then in need of protection,” Baer said. “Stepping out of this new-found identity
— by producing an idea that may disappoint in comparison to their earlier work — always makes them stressed out.”
One way to avoid the bad situation is to stop producing works altogether. You cannot compromise (使陷入危险) your
good name when you do not produce anything new. According to Baer, Harper Lee is a perfect example of this. Her first
book, To Kill a Mockingbird, is one of the bestselling and most loved American novels of all time. Yet she didn’t publish
again until 55 years later.
Creativity is most likely to thrive in environments where producers are motivated primarily by the challenge and
meaning of the work itself and don’t have to worry about the impact on their previously established reputation, Baer said.
Therefore, in Baer’s view, to encourage continuous creativity, we must make sure that rewards and recognition are notonly offered for the outcome of the creative process — a new product — but also for the process of developing the outcome.
Besides, we must reward both success and learning from failure. While success is difficult to predict and often requires a
fair amount of luck, learning from failure can be immensely beneficial and should be encouraged.
28.What does the new study find out?
A.The works of productive writers are usually creative.
B.Many successful inventions are encouraged by rewards.
C.Winning awards is usually easy for first-time producers.
D.Recognition may be a discouragement to creative producers.
29.What does Baer point out about award-winning producers in paragraph 3?
A.They feel bored after their first success.
B.Creative identity causes extra stress for them.
C.Lack of public attention is unacceptable for them.
D.Many of their later works are not as good as their first one.
30.What does the author want to show by giving the example of Harper Lee?
A.People can never create great works without effort.
B.People can actually learn to be creative at any age.
C.Producers tend to avoid creating new works to prevent failure.
D.Producers enjoying taking risks are considered more creative.
31.What does the underlined word “thrive” in the last but one paragraph probably mean?
A.Reduce. B.Remain. C.Increase. D.Disappear.

With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen production
to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of
zero-carbon electricity.
Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water,
separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less
than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way.
The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which
require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which
could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors.
Spain’s large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2,500 hours of sunshine on average per
year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production.
“If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain
and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together
30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.”
Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal
to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has
centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq
argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete.
Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified? ... You
need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.”32.Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain?
A.It needs large amounts of sun and wind. B.It has an effect on heavy industries.
C.It causes conflicts among countries. D.It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity.
33.What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain?
A.Ideal geographical conditions. B.The support from government.
C.Hydrogen production technology. D.Well-developed public transports.
34.What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq?
A.It is highly priced. B.It is easy to store.
C.It is competitive. D.It is highly-polluting.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity. B.Spain struggles to lead EU in heavy industry.
C.Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution. D.Spain replaces fossil fuel with green hydrogen.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever wondered why different people react differently to the things you say and do? Maybe you told your
parents a story that made them laugh, but found that the same story was upsetting to the kids at school. What caused them to
react so differently? 36
Boundaries are the cut-off point between what a person finds funny and charming, and what they find hurtful and
inappropriate. 37 You may not always share a person’s boundaries, but it’s still important to respect them.
38 That’s why it’s especially important to be a good listener when you’re first getting to know someone.
Listening will help you get a feel for the topics they are comfortable discussing. 39 If they become withdrawn
when you bring up a certain topic, or they try to change subjects, you may be making them uncomfortable. Then it is better
to pull back in the conversation, and let them take the lead for a while.
While many people won’t tell you directly that you’ve made them uncomfortable, some people will. 40 In
that case, it’s always best to apologize and correct the offensive behavior. Failing to take a step back can create a lot of
discomfort for the people around you. Most people can forgive a one-time slip, but you should avoid making the same
mistake repeatedly, which can damage a friendship.
A.You aren’t sure of a person’s boundaries.
B.Different people have different boundaries.
C.The gateway to a healthy relationship is boundaries.
D.They may tell you that you’re standing too close to them.
E.Pay attention to the way they react to your ideas and jokes.
F.A person tends to tell you directly if you’ve made a mistake.
G.The answer has something to do with a tricky concept called boundaries.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was Christmastime 1974. I was ten years old, but I was not looking forward to Christmas. The previous spring my
mother had moved our family from rural Alabama to sunny Southern California. My little brother Todd, and I were leaving
behind all of our extended family. This would be my first Christmas away from Alabama.
I was a fat, awkward child with a high-pitched voice and a heavy southern accent. My first day at my new school, I
went to the front of my fourth grade class to introduce myself. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class
burst into laughter with jeers of “He talks funny”. It took the teacher two minutes to restore order.
I was so disappointed that I went to a gas station afterschool and used the phone booth (亭子) there to place a call to
my grandmother. I was going to ask her whether I could return to Alabama and live with her and whether she would send
me the money for a bus ticket home. But the line was busy, and despite several attempts, I didn’t get through.
My Granny was everything good about Christmas. Her language of love was food. She would spend weeks cooking for
Christmas Eve when all of her children and grandchildren would gather at her house. Every favorite dish dessert and cakes
was made. Her table and sideboard groaned (发吱嘎声) under the weight of the food. My cousins, my brother and I would
burst through her backdoor, our arrival announced by the rhyme of five silver bells, which hung on the door. Her house was
tiny but to us children, it was glorious.
She sewed new night dresses for all of her grandchildren. She searched catalogs, newspaper advertisements, and stores
all over town to get us exactly the toys we had requested. She was my comfort. She was magical. I missed her desperately.
Fortunately, there was only one week left before the Christmas break. I was longing for my familiar southern
Christmas.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。The next morning, a large enough package from Granny was delivered to our new house.
