When Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico in September,
2017, most of the islands’ buildings and homes were destroyed. When the hurricane
left much of the area in ruins,Meital Sternthal,a sixth-grader who comes from a
village in Israel, decided to help.
Meital’s connection to the Caribbean islands started with a family vacation in
2015, during which she experienced the beauty of the islands and underwater wonders.
When she learned of the disaster, she said it saddened her that such an amazing place
had been changed into a place of suffering for so many people without electricity,
shelter, clean water and other basic necessities.
Then Meital and her parents came up with the idea of selling her things to raise
money to help the rescue team in Puerto Rico provide safe water for the communities
affected by the hurricane. She started a fund-raising(募捐) page and gave her
business a name:PuertoTiko since the word “tik” means “bag” in the local language.
So with her parents’ support Meital took to her trusty sewing machine(缝纫
机). It’s a hobby she’s had for the past three years, when she started taking sewing
classes. Now,she’s using it for something bigger, something she hopes will help a
lot of people. So far she has raised 50 percent of her $4,000 goal by making and
selling handbags and given it to the charity.
“When I heard about the hurricane,at first I thought about getting in contact with
artists there and delivering the bags there,so they can sell them,” the shy girl said.
“But then we realized it would be too hard and that they might not be able to get the
bags.”Meital spoke to the volunteers who have been working in the disaster-hit areas
and helping people get back on their feet. They promised the money would be used in
the best way—to make sure those people got clean, safe drinking water.
24. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To stress the power of a hurricane.
B. To tell of the background of the story.
C. To show the danger of living on islands.
D. To introduce some information about Meital.
25. How did Meital help the disaster-hit areas?
A. By delivering handbags there. B. By serving as a volunteer.
C. By giving her money to the charity. D. By calling on local artists to
help.
26. Why did Meital learn to sew?
A. She was interested in it. B. She wanted to earn money.
C. She dreamed of being a designer. D. She hoped to help those in need.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The victims are fighting for a better lifeB. Hand-sewn bags are making a difference
C. Sewing machines are welcomed in Puerto Rico
D. Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico

Walking is becoming more and more popular as a fitness activity. It has low risk
and is easy to start, and many studies have shown it is good for health.
Dr. Steven Blair from the Institute for Aerobics Research did a classic eight-year study
with 13,000 people. The study found that those who walked about 30 minutes a day had
a much lower risk of dying early than people who seldom exercised.
A regular (规律的) walking plan can help you in many ways. It reduces blood
cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, makes bones stronger, and burns calories to keep
your weight down.
Starting a walking plan is simple. All you need are comfortable clothes and shoes.
,
It is a good idea to wear thin pieces of clothes that breathe well because exercise makes
your body temperature go up. As for shoes, those designed especially for walking are
the best choice.
Every walk should start with a short warm-up and some simple stretches (伸展).
Walk around your house or in one place for a few minutes first — this helps blood flow
to your muscles before you stretch them. Though walking mainly uses the big muscles
in your legs, don’t forget to stretch your back, shoulders and arms. This will ease stress,
making your walk more enjoyable and more effective.
For new walkers, keep your walks easy. Start with a five-minute stroll, like walking
around your neighborhood, and slowly walk farther. Don’t worry about speed. Instead,
walk at a comfortable pace. Keep it in a correct way. Lift your head and relax your
shoulders. Swing your arms naturally and breathe deeply. If you can’t catch your breath,
slow down or avoid hills. Also, make sure you can talk while walking. If you can’t,
you’re walking too fast.
28. What can we learn about Dr. Steven Blair’s study?
A. Regular walkers may live longer. B. It lasted for several months.
C. Walking is a good form of exercise. D. It included 13,000 teenagers.
29. What should people prepare for a walking plan according to the text?
A. Enough water.B. A simple timer.
C. A special watch. D. Comfortable clothes.
30. Why does the author suggest doing a warm-up before walking?
A. To save time. B. To provide muscles with blood.
.
C To feel excited. D. To lower body temperature.
31. What does the underlined word “stroll” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A slow walk. B. A high jump. C. A long stretch. D. A short break.
D
Why do we travel around the world? There are certainly as many reasons to go on
a world tour as there are world travelers. And if you are reading these lines, it is becauseyou may already have yours.
We travel to have time which we often lack (缺少) in our daily lives to admire a
sunset, to meet new people, to go hiking for several days, or just to do nothing. To meet
people from all over the world and to learn more about their culture and way of life are
two main reasons. To gain new experiences and to get out of the well-known comfort
zone are other reasons.
Now that you have a good reason and make the decision to go on a round-the-world
trip, all you have to do is to prepare your trip around the world. To be honest, we love
this period of travel preparations. We spend our time reading travel blogs, sharing our
desires for destinations and things to do during the journey. It is a very exciting time
before our journey gets started.
However, there are certainly less fun aspects of the preparations for a round-the-
world trip, like the money things. You may ask yourself, “How much does a round-the-
world trip cost?” The budget (预算) for such a trip will depend on many factors such
as your travel style, the destinations you want to visit, activities, accommodations,
airline tickets, visas and so on. But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a millionaire to
go around the world.
And we’re here to help you. We have written all the important steps in preparing
for a long distance trip in our new book Destination Tour du Monde.
32. Why do people travel according to the text?
A. To buy gifts. B. To enjoy the time they rarely have.
C. To avoid doing homework. D. To become travel bloggers.
33. What did the author think of the travel preparation period?
A. Difficult B. Boring. C. Perfect. D. Amazing.
34. What should be considered in the budget for a round-the-world trip?
A. The spots you plan to visit.B. The travel blogs you follow.
C. The gifts you buy after the trip. D. The cameras you take with you.
35. What will the author probably talk about next?
A. Reasons for being a writer. B. Stories of famous travelers.
C. Planning examples in the book. D. Recommendation of restaurants.
