【原文】Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain.
Friends with social media tools let us see what our friends are up to. The digital age also helps us find people who
share our interests. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them. But
we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person. On social media
sites, people tend to post updates that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real
problems. Remember the saying “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog”. A young person could be old. A
woman could be a man. But this doesn't mean that we don't need friends. After all, a friend is one of the nicest things
you can have one of the best things you can be.

On August 6, 1926, Gertrude Ederle stepped into the bone-chilling waters of the English Channel at Cap Gris-
Nez, France, aiming to set a new swimming record. Despite a previous failure, she endured fourteen hours and
thirty-one minutes of tough conditions to become the first woman to swim the Channel, beating the exsiting record
by nearly two hours. Ederle’s record stood until 1950, when Florence Chadwick completed the swim in thirteen
hours and twenty minutes.
Born in New York City, Ederle set an 800-meter freestyle record at twelve in 1919 and focused on long-
distance swimming after winning a three-mile race at 15. Between 1921 and 1925, she held twenty-nine national
and world records, achieving eighteen of them in 1924 alone.
In 1924, Ederle represented (代表) the U. S. in the Paris Olympics, where American women competed in non-
skirted sports for only the second time, winning two bronzes and a gold. The following year, she turned
professional and gained international fame after crossing the English Channel in 1926. Later, Ederle toured North
America and Europe for years, teaching swimming in a foldable tank. However, her hearing had been severely
damaged by her Channel swim and she eventually found a satisfying career teaching swimming to deaf children.
Today the fastest Channel crossing record is held by American Chad Hundeby, who finished it in seven hours
and seventeen minutes in 1994. Despite the Channel being only twenty-one miles at its narrowest, swimmers often
cover more due to winds and strong currents. Ederle, for example, swam about thirty-five miles.
24. What did American women athletes suffer before 1924?
A. Poor equipment. B. Unequal treatment.C. Limited media focus D. Lack of coaching support.
25. What made Gertrude Ederle find a new career path?
A. Her health issue. B. Intention to teach abroad.
C. Desire to break the records. D. Her victory in the Olympics.
26. What did Gertrude Ederle achieve in her swimming career?
A. She traveled worldwide for years to teach swimming.
B. She won several gold medals in Paris Olympic games.
C. She developed various unique swimming techniques.
.
D She was the first female to swim the English Channel.
27. Which of the following can best describe Gertrude Ederle?
A. Talented and Honest. B. Adventurous and Creative.
C. Outgoing and Responsible. D. Determined and Courageous.

Researchers have found that seabirds, including albatrosses and penguins, have a very sensitive (敏感的) part
of their beak (喙) called a “bill-tip organ.” Some other birds are known to use this organ, but this is the first time it
has been found in seabirds. Experts think it might help the birds find food.
To find out if the birds had this feature in their beaks, researchers from the UK and South Africa studied 361
modern seabird species. The team examined the birds’ beaks to study their structure and find out how they were
connected to the animals’ nerves. The scientists found that both albatrosses and penguins have bill-tip organs in
their beaks. Seabirds were not known to search for food using their sense of touch, so the researchers were
surprised.
It’s possible that this could be a body function left over from an ancient ancestor that is no longer needed or
used by modern birds. This is already the case for emus and ostriches, which have a bill-tip organ but don’t use it.
Scientists now need to do more studies on the birds’ behavior to understand what they use the bill-tip organ for.
This could help them learn why some species have developed the organ. Lead researcher Carla du Toit said, “It
represents an important stepping stone in understanding how birds evolved (进化).”
The research could also help protect albatrosses in the wild, since more than half of albatross species are
threatened with extinction. One big threat to these birds is “longline” fishing. In this type of fishing, long lines are
pulled behind a boat to catch fish, and the albatrosses sometimes get trapped because of the lines.
Researchers think that if they can learn more about how albatrosses get their food, humans might be better
able to protect the birds in the future. For example, if albatrosses use their bill-tip organ to discover vibrations (震
动) caused by fish, a device shaking repeatedly could be added to longlines to upset albatrosses, thus preventing the
birds from going near the fishing boat.
28. What can we learn about the research from paragraph 1 to 2?
A. The bill-tip organ makes penguins unique.B. The bill-tip organ may benefit birds to hunt.
C. Seabirds are less sensitive than other birds.
D. Seabirds are famous for their beak structure.
29. Why did the scientists study the function of the bill-tip organ?
A. To revive ancient birds. B. To learn birds’ evolution.
C. To discover new bird species. D. To understand birds’ behavior.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the research?
A. The aim. B. The background.
C. The result. D. The application.
31. How can the device help protect the albatrosses?
A. By shaking the fish ship. B. By locating the albatrosses.
C. By sending confusing signals. D. By shortening the fishing lines.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. D 31. C

Tourism is back, at last. This year the number of trips abroad is expected to overtake levels reached in 2019.
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) predicts that this year will see more overseas trips and higher
traveler spending than in 2019. The return of mass tourism has caused strikes in Western hotspots such as
Barcelona and Majorca. Talk to a hotel manager or a travel agent, though, and the real action is further east.
Travel to Asia had been slower to recover from the covid-19 pandemic than in the West, due to extended
quarantine (隔离) rules from China to Malaysia, keeping the number of tourists down. Now, however, business on
the continent is reviving. The number of travellers arriving in Asian countries is set to jump by a third this year,
according to the WTTC, more than in any other region.
Westerners are turning up in large groups. The number of trips Americans took to Asia doubled last year. The
value of dollar, which has increased strongly against Asian currencies (货币), is part of the explanation. Catherine
Heald, the boss of Remote Lands, a travel agency for the rich, notes bookings for diving in Indonesia, temple visits
in Japan, and food tours in Thailand.
The range of destinations and activities is widening. Wealthy tourists can travel aboard the recently
redeveloped Eastern & Oriental Express through Singapore and Malaysia, run by Belmond, the hotels business of
LVMH, a French luxury giant. Over 500,000 hotel rooms were under construction across Asia as of June, up by
over 4% from last year. Getting to Asia is also becoming easier, with home-grown and Western airlines increasing
the number of flights to and from the continent. British Airways, for instance, is relaunching flights to Bangkok and
Kuala Lumpur.
The biggest boost to Asian tourism, though, is coming from the region’s own travellers. Chinese consumers
have begun to holiday abroad again, with international trips predicted to double this year compared with 2023,
according to Oxford Economics, a research firm. Even then, the number of trips will be below pre-pandemic levels,
leaving plenty of room for growth.
32. Why does the author mention strikes in Western hotspots?
A. To introduce tourism recovery in Asia. B. To explain the challenge in Western.
C. To compare different tourism cultures. D. To show tourism's massive impact.
33. What can we infer from the passage?A. Dollar value alone doubled trips to Asia.
B. Travel will fully return to pre-pandemic levels.
C. Asia took quarantine measures earlier than the west.
D. Asia is making efforts to accommodate more visitors.
34. What does “boost” underlined in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Influence. B. Assistance. C. Increase. D. Value.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Asian Tourism: A Slow Recovery B. The Tourism Rise Returns to Asia
C. Tourism Trends in the Post-Pandemic Era D. Western Tourism: Opportunities and Challenges
【答案】32. A 33. D 34. C 35. B

The Quiet Bloom
Max was a quiet boy who kept to himself. He avoided eye contact, whispered in class, and sat alone at lunch.
His classmates would often make fun of him, calling him “shy guy” or “quiet quake”. Max felt like he was not
important, as if no one truly saw him for who he was, and those who did took pleasure in his discomfort. He spent
most of his days trying to hide in the background, wishing he could just disappear.
One day, while walking through the school garden after class, Max came across a small plant. Its leaves wereyellow and curled, its stem (茎) weak and bent. It seemed like the plant had given up. Max stopped for a moment,
crouching (蹲下) down beside it. Something about its struggle to survive touched him deeply. He saw in the plant a
reflection of his own quiet battle — against feeling unnoticed, against being misunderstood. Without much
thought, Max gently dug it out from the dirt, holding it in his hands.
Taking the plant home, Max carefully placed it by his window, where the sun was brightest. He read up on
how to care for it, learning about the right amount of water, the importance of pruning, and how plants needed both
light and love to grow better. At first, he wasn’t sure what would happen. The plant looked dying, so close to giving
up. But Max couldn’t shake the feeling that if he cared for it, if he gave it a little patience, it might survive.
Days turned into weeks, and Max’s efforts began to pay off. The plant, once lifeless, slowly began to show
signs of recovery. The leaves turned a brighter green, the stem thickened, and tiny new buds (花蕾) began to form.
Max found joy in the little changes-watching the plant grow was like watching something inside of him change,
too.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

_______________
【答案】
As his plant grew better, so did Max. Max began to smile more and even participate in class discussions. His
classmates observed that Max was no longer the quiet boy who kept to himself but someone who had found a bit ofconfidence. Max realized that like his plant, he needed care and attention. He joined the school’s gardening club,
where he could meet others who shared his interest. The club members welcomed him warmly, and Max slowly
became friends with them. His confidence grew, much like the plant that thrived under his careful attention.
One afternoon, the school principal announced a gardening competition. Max’s eyes lit up at the announcement.
He entered the competition with his once struggling plant, now blooming beautifully. The judges were impressed by
his dedication and the transformation of the plant. When the results were announced, Max won first place. The
applause from his classmates echoed in his ears, and for the first time, Max felt truly seen and appreciated. The plant
had not only grown but had also helped Max bloom, teaching him that with a little love and care, anyone could find
their place in the sun.
