Sometimes we fail to give enough attention to the heroes closest to us. That was the case with
my family. My family knew my father had been a WWII soldier. But because he didn’t discuss his
experience, we didn’t dig too deeply.
We lost him last Christmas and when sorting out (整理) his things at home, we discovered what
a truly great hero he was. He was once in college and majored in engineering. At the beginning of
英语试卷 第4页 共12页the war, he was drafted into the army, responding to the call. Just a few years later, he honorably
left the army and returned home. He had also been awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Silver Star
Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
How I wish we had taken the time to learn more about his stories in the war! He would have
answered questions if we had done a little research and known what to ask. Fortunately, there was
one family member who took times to do that. This cousin was interested in WWⅡ. And he
researched the areas where my father served. We now know a small part of my father’s story from
this cousin. We learned that the Silver Star Medal was awarded to my father because he carried an
injured soldier to safety through a minefield (布雷区). And he was once in several well-known
fights.
This year, Memorial Day has a deeper meaning for my family because we have known more
about my father’s service in the army. Many activities were held by my family in memory of my
father. We’re also grateful to that cousin who took the time to find out more.
I hope you can do the same while your heroes are still with you. Find out as much as you can.
Even if they don’t like to talk about their experiences and sacrifices (牺牲), chances are that they’ll
answer direct questions if you do a little digging. You’ll be richly rewarded with a family story for
generations to come.
24. When did the author know his father was a great hero?
A. He organized his father’s things left.
B. His cousin told him his father’s story.
C. They spent the past Christmas together.
D. His father left the army with many honors.
25. How did the author’s father win the Silver Star Medal?
A. By killing enemies in a minefield.
B. By keeping details in battles secret.
C. By saving a soldier from real danger.
D. By taking part in some famous fights.
26. Which of the following can best describe the author’s father?
A. Active and easygoing. B. Helpful and proud.
C. Fearless and talkative. D. Brave and modest.
27. What does the author suggest we do in the last paragraph?
英语试卷 第5页 共12页A. Share family stories with children.
B. Dig more about heroes around us.
C. Show respect for national heroes.
D. Be grateful to those helping us.

A young Dutch inventor is making his effort to cleanup floating plastic (漂浮的塑料) from the
Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers
before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean.
He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the
system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It cleans
plastic out of rivers. The device need solar (太阳的) power to work. “The 1,000 rivers are
responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines
have already been used. Each machine costs about $775,660, but the cost might drop as production
increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles
and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap” , which means
stopping more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the
next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly renew our
oceans again,” said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it
away from the damage caused by larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into
an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is
dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and
empty it when it is full.
28. What do we know about Interceptor?
A. It is powered by energy from the sun. B. It is being under test.
C. It is mainly used in the oceans. D. It can help reorganize waste.

30. What’s the function of the device’s nose?
A. To ensure the device’s safety. B. To send operators text messages.
C. To empty the waste. D. To serve as containers.
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A magazine. C. A diary. D. A guidebook.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the State cross-country race of my senior year of
high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my life.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it to the top fifteen. We had
been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to
my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race,
even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang
above the crowd — telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered
for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy tracks of Arizona.
Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of
the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We moved forward miles and miles with our
running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A
dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal — too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton,
cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I stared at the crowd; a lot of familiar
faces from school came into my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my
dad set his watch, worry and excitement appeared on his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race
began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something.
The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The hot sun beat
upon my back. I was sweaty all over. Nothing was going to stop me, though.
