My parents took me to Wimbledon this year. It is one of the four “Grand Slam”tennis
competitions and happens in the last week of July and the first week of July each year. Even at 8
a .m .the queue for the grounds（场地）is really long! Some people even camp in the queue
because to them it is an important part of the experience.
After three hours, we got into the grounds. The games did not start yet, so we walked
around .We walked around. We found a place to test the speed of a serve（发球）. Fast serves
（over 100 mph） on television look easy, but I could only get a speed of 22 mph! It made those
players superheroes in my eyes. We visited the museum too. Tennis history is shown in photos and
I learnt that the game was once a lot slower.
Next we headed to the hill outside of Centre Court. We could sit there and watch games on a
big screen. People used to call it “Henman Hill” after British player Tim Henman. But now he is
retired, most people call it “Murray Mound” after the player Andy Murray.
Eating strawberries at Wimbledon is a tradition and we ate lots while watching the game. We
did try to get tickets for seats on Centre Court but were not successful .People had to apply early
and a computer decides who gets tickets. I did not mind because if you do get a ticket, you cannot
leave your seat for the whole day. I wanted to see the grounds too. Besides, there were many
different games on the other courts. We also watched a doubles game and were really close to the
action. Overall, it was a great day.

My favourite sport is basketball. The game was invented in the winter of 1891 in America
by Dr James Naismith. He nailed（钉牢）two peach baskets to the wall. His students used a
heavy soccer ball to play the game. It immediately attracted attention and quickly grew popular.
Over the years, there have been many rule changes. Teams had nine players at first. In the 1920s,
there was a cage around the court, so the ball could not go out of play. The game was more

stars like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Our school basketball coach says this can lead to bad
habits. He says we should learn how to play as a team first. I think he is right. Even though we all
want to be a big star, the most important part of basketball is teamwork.
