The glory of the corporate training video
1WORKPLACE TRAINING can confer useful skills. It can also prevent legal trouble and fulfil compliance obligations. And it can be a very easy way to try out time travel. You only have to watch a typical corporate training video to feel the clock rewinding.
2First, and most obviously, some of these videos were filmed before you were born, on a subject that is so evergreen it has never needed an update. The footage is grainy. Men wear ties and women wear pleated skirts. They have names like Rodney and Carol. No one has a tattoo or brings their whole self to work. If they had an illness, it wouldn't be a mental-health issue but something from the distant past, like consumption or scrofula.
3Some training videos may have been made recently but still look incredibly dated. That's because they are produced on the cheap, feature terrible actors who cannot find other work and have been given the remit of achieving the longest possible shelf-life by not showing anything too contemporary.
4Watch a video on harassment at work, for example, and you are likely to see men in high-viz jackets pretending to shout at each other while a narrator warns that "horseplay" can get out of hand. Horseplay? Harassment can leave people feeling isolated, you are told, as someone sits in a digger and looks isolated. You haven't seen performances this bad since a nativity play.
5Second, plenty of training materials are on subjects that require no training. To watch some corporate videos is to be treated like a particularly dim child—or, more accurately, like someone a particularly dim child would consider to be a moron. Your columnist recently completed an online video course on workplace slips, trips and falls, and was left wondering how the species has managed to survive so long.
6There were warnings about wet leaves and the dangers of transitioning from outdoors to indoors. There were moments set aside for deep reflection on questions such as: "What are the most common things that you slip or trip on in your typical day-to-day [sic]?" And there were remarkable new insights. It turns out that slips can be avoided by ensuring you wipe the soles of your shoes on a mat when entering the premises of a building. Note that word "soles". You can spot an untrained worker a mile off by the way they lie down and flap around like an elephant seal on heat as they try to dry the tops of their shoes.
7Third, lots of training videos lean very heavily on the techniques of primary schools. When you're not watching wooden actors, you're being fed cartoons. Every so often, multiple-choice questions test your level of understanding. The slips, trips and falls course features a waiter who had not noticed that "the decorative rug at the entrance to the dining area had lost its grip." He had caught his foot on the edge of the rug, stumbled and regained his balance. What type of incident had he experienced: a slip, trip or fall?
8It's hard to conceive of a lower-stakes scenario than a waiter not falling over, but your inner toddler is given an incentive to care. If you get a multiple-choice question right on a training video, you will probably win a badge or a gold star. Ace the entire test, and confetti will fill the screen and you will get a downloadable certificate of achievement. Fail to finish the course, and you will be reported to the teachers.
9Treat an audience as if they are children and their behaviour will revert to childish norms. You might be approaching retirement but you still get a tiny thrill from getting a gold star. You become insanely proud of your slips, trips and falls certificate, and pin it to your cubicle wall. You wonder to yourself whether you could take the course on how to use stepladders, and shake your head at your own wild ambition.
10You also succumb to the urge to cheat. You start playing a cyber-security training video on avoiding phishing, smishing and quishing, and pay it attention only when it requires you to press the "next" button. If there are no penalties for failing the multiple-choice quiz, you just skip the training and go straight to the test. You click things randomly until you pass with distinction, and are awarded a phishing, smishing and quishing certificate.
11It's just like school: you have a credential but have absorbed almost nothing. Which is why, when you leave the office that evening, you fail to notice that a colleague has blanketed the foyer with wet leaves as a bit of horseplay.
brings their whole self to work
slips, trips and falls
It's hard to conceive of a lower-stakes scenario than…="很难想象比…… Ace…, and you will… / Fail…, and you will…
The glory of the corporate training video(企业培训视频的荣光)的反讽彻底坐实:"荣光"=彻头彻尾的无效。

1. That's because they are produced on the cheap, feature terrible actors who cannot find other work and have been given the remit of achieving the longest possible shelf-life by not showing anything too contemporary.
主干:they are produced…, (they) feature terrible actors…, and (they) have been given the remit…
That's because [they are produced on the cheap], [feature terrible actors (who cannot find other work)] and [have been given the remit of achieving the longest possible shelf-life by not showing anything too contemporary].
为特色",主语是 videos;② who 引导定语从句,两个谓语并列 cannot find… and (cannot find) other work 实际上 who 只修饰 actors;③ by not showing…
2. Watch a video on harassment at work, for example, and you are likely to see men in high-viz jackets pretending to shout at each other while a narrator warns that "horseplay" can get out of hand.
(If you watch…, you are likely to…)。
[Watch a video…], and [you are likely to see men (in high-viz jackets) (pretending to shout at each other)] while [a narrator warns that "horseplay" can get out of hand].
难点:see sb doing 结构中套了现在分词 pretending;while 引出同时发生的画面与旁白;get out of hand = 失控。
3. To watch some corporate videos is to be treated like a particularly dim child—or, more accurately, like someone a particularly dim child would consider to be a moron.
(To do A is to do B),表示"A 就等同于 B"。
To watch some corporate videos is to be treated like [a particularly dim child] — or, more accurately, like [someone (a particularly dim child would consider to be a moron)].
难点:someone 后省略关系代词 that/whom 的定语从句:someone (that) a dim child would consider to be a moron。consider sb to be…
4. You can spot an untrained worker a mile off by the way they lie down and flap around like an elephant seal on heat as they try to dry the tops of their shoes.
结构:spot A by B(通过 B 认出 A)+ the way (that)…
You can spot an untrained worker a mile off by the way [(that) they lie down and flap around like an elephant seal on heat] as [they try to dry the tops of their shoes].
难点:① a mile off = 一英里外,夸张说法"一眼就认出";② the way 后可直接跟从句(= the way that/in which);③ on heat = 发情期(英式;美式说 in heat);④ 作者故意把"擦鞋底"曲解为"擦鞋面",制造荒诞画面。
5. It's hard to conceive of a lower-stakes scenario than a waiter not falling over, but your inner toddler is given an incentive to care.
It's hard to conceive of [a lower-stakes scenario] than [a waiter not falling over], but [your inner toddler] is given [an incentive to care].
难点:① conceive of 后接名词;② a waiter not falling over 是动名词复合结构(名词所有格/宾格 + doing),作 than 的宾语;③ inner toddler 是作者造的比喻——成年人心里那个学步小孩。
6. Ace the entire test, and confetti will fill the screen and you will get a downloadable certificate of achievement.
结构:祈使句 + and + will do(第 2 句的变体)。
[Ace the entire test], and [confetti will fill the screen] and [you will get a downloadable certificate of achievement].
Fail to finish the course, and you will be reported to the teachers.
7. Treat an audience as if they are children and their behaviour will revert to childish norms.
[Treat an audience as if they are children] and [their behaviour will revert to childish norms].
8. Which is why, when you leave the office that evening, you fail to notice that a colleague has blanketed the foyer with wet leaves as a bit of horseplay.
结构:Which is why…
[Which is why], (when you leave the office that evening), you fail to notice that [a colleague has blanketed the foyer with wet leaves as a bit of horseplay].
难点:① which 指代前句整体而非某个词;② fail to notice 比 don't notice 更书面,强调"未能做到";③ as a bit of horseplay 中 as = "作为、当作",是对第 ④ 段 horseplay 的 callback;④ wet leaves 呼应第 ⑥ 段的湿树叶。
A can… It can also… And it can…
Workplace training can confer useful skills. It can also prevent legal trouble. And it can be a very easy way to try out time travel. 仿写 →Social media can spread useful information. It can also reconnect old friends. And it can be a very efficient way to waste an entire evening.
You only have to do X to do Y
You only have to watch a typical corporate training video to feel the clock rewinding. 仿写 →You only have to read one week of product reviews to realise how much trust has been lost.
It's hard to conceive of a [比较级] N than…
It's hard to conceive of a lower-stakes scenario than a waiter not falling over. 仿写 →It is hard to conceive of a more wasteful policy than one that rewards attendance rather than results.
公式 4 祈使句 + and + will:Do X, and Y will happen
Treat an audience as if they are children and their behaviour will revert to childish norms. 仿写 →Measure employees by hours logged, and their real work will quietly disappear.
B:To do X is to do Y
To watch some corporate videos is to be treated like a particularly dim child. 仿写 →To judge a school solely by exam results is to mistake the map for the territory.
Which is why…
It's just like school: you have a credential but have absorbed almost nothing. Which is why, when you leave the office that evening, you fail to notice… 仿写 →Most of the money never reaches the classroom. Which is why, a decade later, the school still has no library.

• Compliance obligations are not optional: harassment and safety rules exist because informal norms fail.• A short, well-designed course can confer genuinely useful skills at very low marginal cost.• Documentation protects both employer and employee when disputes arise.
• When the only incentive is a certificate, employees succumb to the urge to cheat — compliance becomes theatre.• Courses designed for the longest shelf-life deliberately avoid anything contemporary, and therefore anything real.• Treat an audience as if they are children and their behaviour will revert to childish norms: infantilising training produces infantilised workers.• The measure of training is not credentials issued but behaviour changed.
It's just like school: you have a credential but have absorbed almost nothing.A system that rewards the appearance of learning will reliably produce the absence of it.
| Callback(前后呼应) |
Bartleby
I would prefer not to(我宁愿不做)"。
consumption(消耗病)是肺结核的旧称,因患者日渐消瘦而得名;scrofula(瘰疬)是颈部淋巴结核,在维多利亚小说里常见。
"bring your whole self to work"
nativity play
