国产12000米钻机完钻第二口超深井

China's 12,000-Meter Rig Completes a Second Ultra-Deep Well

On October 2, an ultra-deep well in northwest China was completed. It is called Zhentan-1 and lies in the Tarim Oilfield, on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert. The well goes 8,345 meters into the ground.

The well was drilled by China's first self-developed 12,000-meter rig. Its steel tower is 82 meters high and can carry 665 tons. The machine also has a powerful winch and a smart control system, so much of the work is done automatically. In the past, China bought such rigs from other countries.

On October 1, workers took out a six-meter rock core from 8,080 meters below the ground. The rock is about 500 million years old. Scientists say it helps them study oil and gas deep underground. So far, the Tarim Oilfield has drilled more than 270 ultra-deep wells.

A 2,000-Year-Old Brocade That Wished the Nation Joy

A blue silk brocade about 2,000 years old is kept at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum. Nine Chinese characters are woven into it, and one of them is “guo qing”, or national joy.

In ancient times, “guo qing” meant something happy for the country, not the National Day we celebrate today. The full sentence was probably “Climb high and look to the four seas, and let wealth, honour and long life be the nation's joy”.

The brocade was found in 1980 at Loulan, an ancient city on the Silk Road in the desert. Workers also found lacquer ware, bronze mirrors and coins there. The cloth shows dragons and winged beasts from West Asia, a sign that the road brought different cultures together.

Cities Open Government Canteens and Car Parks to Visitors

During this year's National Day holiday, more and more Chinese cities are opening their government canteens and car parks to visitors, a move that has become popular online.

In Changzhi, Shanxi Province, a government canteen offers a buffet breakfast for six yuan. Suzhou, in Jiangsu Province, has opened more than 37,000 free parking spaces. In Dunhuang, Gansu Province, buses on lines 1 to 6 are free, and 8,898 parking spaces cost nothing.

Huainan, in Anhui Province, now opens four government canteens instead of one. A meal with one meat dish and two vegetable dishes costs 15 yuan, and visitors need to book a day ahead. Nanjing offers over 40,000 sharedparking spaces, and Hangzhou has opened more than 19,000. Reporters say at least 70 cities have joined in.
