A Nuclear Clock Built in China

A new type of timekeeper, known as a nuclear clock, has been built and successfully operated by Chinese scientists, who say it is one of the most important advances in quantumprecision measurement this century.

Unlike atomic clocks, which rely on the energy transitions of electrons orbiting an atom, a nuclear clock is based on transitions deep inside the nucleus of thorium-229, a rare radioactive isotope. Because the nucleus is far smaller than the atom itself, its transitions are less disturbed by external electromagnetic fields and temperature changes, which is why the device is expected to offer greater accuracy. To drive the transition, the team built its own continuous-wave vacuum ultraviolet laser with a wavelength of 148 nanometres, and it also grew high-quality thorium-doped calcium fluoride crystals from just 1.4 micrograms of the scarce isotope.

The findings were published online in Nature on October 7. Several of the joint first authors are doctoral students born after 2000. Solid-state nuclear clocks are expected to be compact and easy to engineer, making them promising candidates for satellite navigation, deep-space missions and tests of fundamental physics.

The Slow Train That Keeps a Long March Memory

Every morning in Baiyin, Gansu Province, a slow green train sets off for Changzheng station — the only railway station in China named after the Long March.

The station, built in 1972 to commemorate the Red Army's meeting at Dalachi, serves a line that has been operated by train number 7515/6 for more than three decades. The whole journey covers 94 kilometres, takes a little over two hours and costs just 11.5 yuan, which makes it a lifeline for people in remote villages. Some of the smaller stops along the route have no platform at all; the train simply halts whenever a passenger is waiting to get on.

More than 90 years ago, the soldiers who set out on the Long March were, on average, under 20 years old, and they crossed mountains and rivers on foot for thousands of kilometres. Today, the children who take this train say they owe their peaceful lives to those young soldiers, and that the spirit of the Long March still lives in Chinese hearts. While high-speed trains race ahead, this slow green train quietly keeps a warmer promise — connecting the smallest stops to the wider world.

China to Lead Global Ice and Snow Standards

China will lead the writing of global standards for man-made ice and snow landscapes, after a new committee was approved to base its office in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province.

According to the Standardization Administration of China, Harbin Ice and Snow World has been appointed to host the secretariat of ISO/TC358, a committee on artificial ice and snow landscapes. This is the first ISO technical body in China's ice and snow industry. The committee, proposed by China, will develop international standards covering the safety, design, construction, operation, maintenance and sustainable development of indoor and outdoor ice and snow structures, and its work will focus on terminology, engineering, safety and low-carbon technologies.

The application was submitted in October 2025 by Harbin Ice and Snow World together with the China National Institute of Standardization, and it was approved on July 20, 2026, after two rounds of voting by ISO member states. Because such parks now appear across the country, from large outdoor sites in the north to indoor ice halls in the south, the new standards should give the fast-growing industry a single set of technical rules and share Chinese experience with the world.
