This weekend I had the pleasure of seeing the Latvian animated film Flow in the theater. I'd never heard of it,but all of the other options were sequels (续集) or Christmas movies. Flow had a great trailer (预告片), excellentreviews, and won many awards. I was told.
It is about the adventures of a black cat, a yellow dog, and several other animals that band together to survive acatastrophic flood. There are no people in the film. In fact, there is no dialogue at all in the hour and a half.
You would think that a movie without any human characters or dialogue would be boring. Well, Flow isanything BUT. On the contrary, I was often on the edge of my seat, terrified for the danger these little guys faced. They're constantly escaping enemies and rising water. Eventually, our black cat finds himself in a new land. At the
start of the movie he is alone, but by the end he is surrounded by new friends.
What, if anything, does this movie "mean"? Clearly, one of the basic themes is unity-different species thatinitially don't get along eventually learn to help each other survive. But I think the fact that humans are completelyabsent seems intentional. The animals pass through run-down, abandoned towns, implying that humanity may havebeen wiped out by a disaster. Combined with the flood, this suggests a metaphor about climate change and sea levelrise The movie's metaphors are subtle: water is an ever-present symbol in the film, and it is constantly flowingforward, pushing the action and our characters. With the title literally named Flow, temporariness seems to be the
main message: things constantly changing, the world moves on. We often can't control storms of life. What we cancontrol are our own actions. You can choose to fight the current or go with it and make the best of what you finddown river.
Or it could mean something else completely different to you! Like the best poems, this movie is open tomultiple interpretations.
24. What initially motivated the author to watch the film Flow?
A. Recommendations from strangers.B. Curiosity about an unknown movie.
C. Its unique theme concerning animals.D. Its positive reception and many awards.
25. Which of the following is a distinctive feature of Flow?
A. It involves more than human characters.
B. It contains no spoken dialogue.
C. It is a short animation within 90 minutes.
D. It is primarily a Christmas-themed story.
26 In the author's opinion, what does humans' absence from the film imply?
A. The unpredictability of life.B. The difficulty of survival.
C. The loss of humanity.D. The unity of diverse species.
27. Where is the text probably from?
A. An entertainment website.B. An eco-tour journal.
C. An editorial on global warming.D. A textbook on animation.

A "memory breakdown" is often said to be the major cognitive problem of our time. In a recent piece in TheChronicle Review, Daniel Mercer argued that "students can't remember even simple facts without checking theirphones", and many schools have quietly lowered expectations for memorizing dates, formulas and vocabulary.
Yet complaints about weak memory are hardly new. In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Lathamblamed that cheap printed books would destroy students' power to remember, because they no longer needed tokeep long passages in their heads. Over the decades, similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool hasentered classrooms.
Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to usetheir memory. Many students now treat their phones as an "external brain", much as earlier generations treated thefamily bookshelf. At the same time, the use of digital calendars, search engines and cloud storage continue to rise. This points to a change not in whether people can remember, but in what they believe is worth remembering."Students can still memorize," Mercer wrote. "They're just deciding to memorize different things."
This leads to a deeper question: What kind of memory do we truly need, and why? Psychologists oftendistinguish between recall-producing information with no help-and recognition, which is using clues to find whatwe once knew. In classic "change blindness" experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking tohas been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows thatrelying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managinglimited mental resources.
Could today's young people be developing useful memory strategies that we have not yet learned to value? What about their skill at searching huge databases in seconds, or at linking ideas across videos, chats and onlinedocuments? These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider--with the history of past "memorybreakdown" in mind-how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways.
28. What does the underlined word "denunciations" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Origins.B. Reminders.C. Indicators.D. Criticism
29. What does the growing use of digital tools suggest according to Mercer
A. People are changing the way they use their memory.
B. People no longer need to train their memory.
C. Schools are forcing students to rely on external devices.
D. Modern technology is destroying traditional learning tools.
30 Why does the author mention the "change blindness" experiments?
A. To display that people are easily fooled by visual tricks.
B. To prove that using outside cues can be a reasonable strategy.
C. To demonstrate that face recognition is more important than tasks.
D. To illustrate that most memories are formed without our awareness.
31. What will probably be discussed next?
A. Challenges facing the young generation.
B. More valuable lessons taught by history.
C. Ways to support memory in the digital age.
D. Effects of relying on external memory tools.

A team of psychologists from the University of Chicago conducted an experiment to compare the effects ofnatural sounds and common white noise on people's sustained attention.
In the study, 212 adult participants were randomly divided into two groups. The nature sound group completeda 40-minute attention task with recordings of forest birdsong and gentle rainfall playing in the background. Thecontrol group performed the same task with standard white noise - a steady, uniform sound widely used inworkplaces to reduce surrounding distractions. The task required participants to monitor a stream of numbers on ascreen and press a button whenever a specific rare pattern appeared. Both accuracy and reaction speed wererecorded as key measures of attention performance.
Overall, the nature sound group scored 12% higher on average in attention accuracy than the control group, with no significant difference in reaction speed between the two groups. When researchers divided participants bytheir self-reported daily distractibility, the performance gap grew much wider. Among people who often struggledto stay focused in daily life. those in the nature sound group performed over 21% better than similar participants inthe control group. For those with naturally strong concentration, the improvement was small and not statisticallymeaningful.
The researchers also tracked participants' mood states before and after the task. Both groups reported similarlevels of relaxation and positive feelings after finishing the test. This result indicated that the attentionimprovement was not driven by a better mood, but by the natural sounds themselves, which help the brain enter agentle state of focus without requiring extra mental effort.
"Many people turn on white noise when they need to concentrate, assuming it is the most reliable choice," saidDr. Lena Marlow, lead researcher of the study. "But our findings suggest natural sounds are a more effective option, especially for those who struggle with distraction. Small adjustments to our daily sound environment can bringnoticeable improvements to work and study efficiency."
32. What is a feature of the nature sound group in the experiment?
A. They finished a shorter version of the task.
B. They worked with natural sound recordings.
C. They were tested only on reaction speed.
D. They were chosen from office workers.
33. Which group showed the most obvious performance improvement?
A. The nature sound group with strong natural focus.
B. The control group with strong natural focus.
C. The nature sound group with high daily distractibility.
D. The control group with high daily distractibility.
34. Why did the researchers measure participants' mood states?
A. To rule out mood as the cause of the results.
B. To judge how relaxing different sounds are.
C. To test the influence of the task on feelings.
D. To measure the mental effort of the task.
35. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. Mood Changes Influence People's Attention Performance
B. White Noise Works Well in Reducing Surrounding Distractions
C. Natural Sounds Beat White Noise for Sustained Attention
D. Attention Tasks Test Adults' Reaction Speed

Nowadays, staying positive has become a popular mindset____36____. But what happens when we takepositivity to an extreme? Could being blindly optimistic lead to disappointment? While looking on the bright side isgenerally seen as a virtue, new research suggests that "toxic positivity" might actually harm our mental health.
Toxic positivity occurs when people deny their real emotions and force themselves to stay optimistic. GitanjaliTrevorrow-Seymour, a professional coach, explains that humans are naturally meant to experience a wide range ofemotions, from joy and gratitude to sadness and disappointment.____37____. Like many things in life, mentalwellbeing is all about balance. The danger lies in labeling feelings as "good" or "bad". When we desperately avoid"negative" emotions, we end up suppressing our real feelings. This suppression places extra stress on the body,
which can eventually lead to anxiety or even physical illness.____38____If we only show our "happy" selves, our social interactions can become shallow and inauthentic. When a friend is going through hard times, responding with "Try to be positive!" may be well-intentioned, but itoften dismisses their feelings. Instead of feeling comforted, they may feel forced to put on a brave face, which ismentally exhausting. True support involves acknowledging their pain rather than attempting to fix it immediately.___39____It is OK to feel upset, frustrated or heart-broken when things go wrong. Our painful feelings carryimportant messages about what matters to us. Ignoring them means we lose chances to know ourselves better.
So, should we avoid positive affirmations entirely? Not necessarily.____40____The key is to accept the fullrange of human experience rather than bury hard feelings under false cheerfulness.
A. It also damages our connections with other people.
B. We should permit ourselves to feel bad from time to time.
C. No single feeling should occupy our mind non-stop.
D. People are often told to push away unpleasant feelings.
E. Many social media posts advocate this optimistic attitude.
F. We can still seek hope without refusing our true inner state.
G. It is harmful to share our negative feelings with our friends.

Even before I reached the tent, I knew there would be trouble. My little brother Andy was following me, with
a sleeping bag, a flashlight, and his toy bear. My friends Wade and Brad thought Andy would ruin everything. Hewould get scared in the middle of the night and have to be taken back to the house. Their complaint continued.
Andy promised that he wouldn't ruin anything. He wormed his way into the tent and settled in the far corner.Night was settling in, too, with the woods around us fading toward black. The house, with its porch light on,
seemed a long way from us.
"Time for ghost stories," Brad announced as soon as I closed the tent. He told a story about vampires, but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade's turn, he told a story of three guys who were camping in a tent.He described our situation exactly-except for Andy. When he was describing a scary creature, somewhere outside,a branch broke. The hairs on my arms shot straight up. "These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right?"Wade continued. "Just then a terrible cry came out of the darkness." And out of the woods behind us was a cry, loud, frightening, and strange. The hairs on my head shot straight up too.
"What was that?" Brad asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless. Wadesuggested someone should go out to check, but no one dared. "What if it's something trapped or hurt?" Andy saidanxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we'd forgotten, sitting in the corner with his arms around hisbear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.

第二节参考范文
"I'm going to see." Andy ran out of the tent and disappeared in the darkness. A wave of panic washed over
me the moment he faded into the woods. Without hesitation, I sprinted after him, my heart stuck in my throat. Cold
night wind whistled through the woods, and the sharp, sorrowful cry floated from afar. Tracking the wavering beam
from Andy's flashlight, I found him rooted under a huge tree. I directed my flashlight upwards, only to find a
helpless little creature behind leaves, letting out piercing cries out of terror.
Andy said it was a baby monkey caught between the branches, and it was crying for its mother. Eyes filled
with pity, Andy turned to me, pleading that we should set it free. We called over Wade and Brad, who finally
gathered up courage to join our rescue. With joint efforts, we carefully brought the frightened baby monkey safely
down. Soon, its mother emerged from nowhere. The little monkey leaped excitedly into its mother's arms. As they
disappeared into the dark forest, it struck me that true bravery lies not in being fearless, but in daring to reach out
with kindness even when you tremble with fear.
