I am Mary Steenburgen, an actress. Tommy, my best friend, lived in the house next door when I was little. Weboth loved the outdoors. We’d go on adventures deep in the woods. At home, Tommy had a big box filled with hats.
Each morning, we’d pull one out and that was our character for the day. Of the two of us, Tommy was the better
actor.
I’ve always felt I was raised by a beautiful fairy. My mom Nellie, had an extraordinary smile. My father,
Maurice, was a train conductor. When I was 8, the doctors told us that Dad had a serious heart condition and we
needed to care for him. I developed magical thinking. I’d say to myself that if I did this and that, my daddy would
live. I told myself I had to make straight A’s and never do anything wrong.
After high school, I attended Hendrix College in Arkansas. When I was a freshman, they chose me to act a part
in the school’s big play, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail. At the end, one of the drama professors said, “You
don’t really belong here. You belong in New York. They’d know what to do with you.” He told me something about
Neighborhood Playhouse. He said it was small but Sandy Meisner, the man who ran it was great. I auditioned (试
演) and a month later, very luckily, I was accepted.
After moving to New York, my big break came six years later, in 1977.I took a meeting about a movie called
Goin’ South, with Jack Nicholson. After an audition, they said I wasn’t quite right. Back in reception, Jack gave me
a script (剧本) and told me I’d have 10 minutes with him the next day. I made it to a screen test in Los
Angeles. After, I was in Jack’s office and asked if someone could pay my hotel expenses. I was broke. He said,
“Don’t worry about it, kid. You’re on the payroll.”
4. When did Mary first play a role?
A. When she acted a part in college.
B. When her father was seriously ill.
C. When she and Tommy played with a box of hats.
D. When she auditioned in Neighborhood Playhouse.
5. What made Mary decide to be excellent in her study?
A. Her father’s serious disease.
B. Her mother’s gift for telling fairies.
C. Her confidence in the study.
D. Her family’s poor living conditions.
6. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Hendrix College is the best for Mary.
B. Sandy Meisner refused Mary’s application.
C. The professor spoke highly of Mary’s acting skills.D. Mary’s performance was common in high school.
7. What did Jack Nicholson mean by saying “You’re on the payroll. ”?
A. She had another chance to audition.
B. She was accepted to act in the movie.
C. She needed to sharpen her acting skills.
D. She was offered discounts on the expenses.

The global use of streaming media has provided fans of niche sports (小众体育) with easy access to
international sports programs, and for followers of traditional major sports, a way to get to know niche sports. The
increase of viewership platforms in the digital age has enabled many fans to explore their favorite niche sports
deeper, while others actively discover new sports to follow and enjoy. Accordingly, fan clubs for niche sports have
been growing.
Among the most noticeable developments in recent years that catch the fans’ attention is the rise of niche
sports leagues (联盟). They attract thousands of fans to watch their games, and their television viewers reach
millions. Given how quickly sports followers warm up to the leagues, everyone seems to know about them, which
brings up some questions — who are watching these games and what makes a niche sports fan?
According to a recent Global Web Index report on niche sports followers, a niche sports fan is a person who
follows or watches at least five niche sports leagues or events. More than half of niche sports fans fall within the
25-44 age range. They are excited about the sports content shown on streaming media, and are more likely to pay
for such services compared to the general population. And they present a higher likelihood of using many kinds of
second screens in sports seasons, including laptops, smartwatches, and smartphones.
Pickleball (匹克球) is a great example of a niche sport that has developed from a relatively unknown activity
to a US national passion. So, what will the next pickleball be? Managing Director Peter Cosco from Isos Growth
Advisory, a sports investment company, said, “Technological advancement helps fans get involved in sports, but it
doesn’t make it certain. Developing fan love for a new sport, especially a niche one, takes careful management of
resources, a well thought-out plan, good relationships with the right people, and the ’play’ factor. That is, is it fun to
play and fun to watch?”
8. What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. More people are aware of sports’ benefits.
B. Technology contributes to niche sports’ popularity.C. Fans have a positive effect on niche sports’ development.
D. Sports platforms have made huge economic gain in recent years.
9. What does the author mean by saying “sports followers warm up to the leagues”?
A. Sports followers want to join the leagues.
B. The leagues have attracted energetic players.
C. The leagues make changes based on fans’ preferences.
D. Sports followers become very interested in the leagues.
10. What is a characteristic of niche sports fans?
A. They are addicted to electronics.
B. They come from different age groups.
C. They are socially disconnected in daily life.
D. They are highly dependent on digital services.
11. What do Peter Cosco’s words suggest?
A. Pickleball became widely known by accident.
B. A sport needs various conditions to interest people.
C. Niche sports should be improved to attract a larger audience.
D. Technology offers increasing chances to introduce newborn sports.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. B

A new study suggests that science role-playing may help tighten the gender gap in science, technology,
engineering, and math(STEM)education and careers for women simply by improving their identity as scientists.
Frustrated by the gender gap in STEM, in which some fields employ at least three times more men than
women, Cornell graduate student Reut Shachnai wanted to do something about it. Reut said the idea to help foster
young girls’ interest in science came to her during a lecture in a class she was taking on Psychology of Imagination.
Reut designed an experiment to test if assuming the role of a successful scientist would improve girls’
persistence in a “sink or float” science game. The game itself was simple yet challenging: a computer screen
projected a slide with an object in the center above a pool of water. Kids then had to predict whether the object
would sink or float.
She studied 240 four -to -seven -year -olds, because this is around the time kids first develop their sense of
identity and capabilities. They were divided into two groups. Children in the “story” group learned about the
successes and struggles of a gender -matched scientist before playing the game. Boys heard about Isaac Newtonand girls were told about Marie Curie. Children in the “pretend” group were told to assume the identity of the
scientist they just learned about.
All kids played at least one round of the game. No matter what group they were in, girls got the answers right
just as often as boys -nearly 70% of the time. Boys, however, didn’t really benefit from the stories or make-believe.
Besides, girls pretending to be Dr. Marie persisted twice as long at the sink-or-float game, playing just as much as
the boys did.
Reut’s teacher Tamar Kushnir said, “Rather than merely hearing about role models, children may benefit from
actively performing the type of actions they see role models perform. In other words, taking a few steps in the role
model’s shoes, instead of merely observing her walk.”
12. Why did Reut design a “sink or float” science game?
A. To handle the gender gap in STEM. B. To attach importance to STEM.
C. To draw kids’ attention to STEM. D. To compare boys’ and girls’ persistence.
13. What can we infer from the sink-or-float game?
A. Kids enjoyed listening to scientists’ stories. B. Boys avoided playing make-believe games.
C. Girls performed as well as boys in science. D. Children followed Dr. Marie to explore science.
14. What is Tamar Kushnir’s attitude towards kids’ assuming identity as scientists?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Girls should get recognition like boys B. A fine example has boundless power for kids
C. Girls can work on more science games D. Make-believe exercises benefit girls in STEM
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D
