Six Twists for Continuation Writing
Misreading, then understanding
I had decided to tell the old man off. He was there again, taking up half the bench, his coat grey with age, crumbs scattered round his feet. “Excuse me,” I began, “this bench is for everyone.” He looked up, startled, and moved at once — then I saw what he had been hiding. Beneath the newspaper lay a small brown dog, stiff with cold, asleep under his coat. “She can’t walk far,” he said quietly. “But she likes the pigeons.” I sat down beside him and stayed until the sun went down.
Then I saw what he had been hiding. / Only then did I notice the …
An obstacle out of nowhere
I had rehearsed the speech forty times. My name was called, the hall went quiet, and I climbed the steps two at a time. Then, three steps from the podium, the fire alarm shrieked. Chairs scraped; a thousand people rose at once; I was carried out with the crowd into the car park, my notes still folded in my hand. For twenty minutes we stood under a grey sky, laughing and shivering. When the alarm stopped, nobody went back. Someone shouted, “Go on then!” So I climbed onto the low wall and gave my speech in the open air, and it was the only time I was not nervous at all.
Then, just as …, … / All at once, the … cut through everything.
The stranger was never a stranger
The man who returned my wallet smelled of rain and wet cardboard. He refused the money I held out, and I felt a little ashamed of my relief. “Take it,” I said. “You need it more than I do.” He smiled and shook his head. “I used to teach at the school on this street,” he said. Then he turned up his collar and walked off, and I stood in the rain with the wallet in my hand, reading the name I had seen on my old report card a hundred times without ever once looking at the man behind it.
“I used to …,” he said. / It was then that I recognized …
The helped becomes the helper
I had spent the whole climb keeping the old man steady, one hand hovering behind his back. Then the path narrowed, a stone rolled under my boot, and it was I who went down, my ankle folding under me. Before I could say a word he had my arm over his shoulder — the same arm I had been guiding all morning — and he was talking, calmly, about a bridge he had crossed in 1963. He carried me down the last half mile. At the bottom I tried to thank him. “You kept me company,” he said. “That’s harder than carrying.”
It was he who … / Before I could …, he had already …
The prize and the price
The results went up at nine. My name was third from the top — the medal I had wanted for four years. I turned to tell my mother, and then I remembered. She had been in hospital since Tuesday, and I had told nobody, because I did not want their pity before the race. The medal was cold in my pocket the whole way there. She was awake. “Did you win?” she asked. I said yes. “Then why,” she said, “are you crying?”
… and then I remembered. / The … was cold in my pocket all the way home.
Nothing changes but the mind
I had practised the sentence all the way home. Dad, I was wrong. It sounded easy on the bus, easy on the stairs, easy with my hand on the door. Then he opened it, and he looked older than he had a month ago, and the sentence went out of me like air from a tyre. What I said was, “The car’s outside.” He nodded and stepped aside. We ate dinner without mentioning anything. Halfway through, he passed me the salt without being asked, and I understood that he had heard it anyway.
… and I understood that … / Nothing was said, but something had changed.
