I worked at a local station of the Berlin fire department. We got an alert(警报)
around 8:25 pm that Friday and rushed to the fire engine, where the printout from the
dispatcher(调度员) said there was a nine-year-old boy locked in a safe.
I asked myself:if it were a safe, would it be airtight?I was aware that it might
already be too late by the time we arrived.I had to plan for a bad outcome. On the
other hand,if we were in time, how long would it take us to open the safe?I knew it
would be an incredibly difficult task. It's what safes are designed for—not to be
opened.
It took less than five minutes to reach the property. When I saw a woman crying
on the street,I knew the situation was serious. She was the boy's mother and she led us
into the basement. She told us the boy was alive and we started talking to him;he was
very calm.We asked how it had happened:during a game of hide and seek with his
five-year-old brother,he had thought the safe would be a good place to hide.
The boy's parents had got the house from his mother's father. The unlocked safe
had been there when they moved in and was in an area they didn't use much. The boy's
little brother had shut the safe, then, when he couldn't open it again. The only person
who knew the combination was the boy's late grandfather.
From the outset, the biggest priority was getting oxygen to the boy.We got oxygen
from the hospital. The boy said that he could feel a thin stream of air.I asked hisparents if anyone had opened the safe before and they said no. So we had to guess a
six-digit code(密码).We started typing them in——but we had to wait 10 minutes
between each attempt before we could try again. So quickly we tried them all.No luck.

①I/we: 消防员
3.前文故事梗概:第一段:消防员我接到警报—9岁男孩被锁在保险箱中;
第二段:我接警后的心理活动---暗示这个任务很棘手;
第三段:我们火速感到现场---得知男孩为什么会被锁在保险箱;
第四段:无人知道保险箱的密码;
密码;
We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force,
starting with a drill.

Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate typed in
the correct code.
We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting
with a drill. So strong was the safe that it was difficult for us to drill a hole
immediately. But that was an important way to provide the boy oxygen. We
comforted him as we drilled. What made us relieved was that the boy was
still in a calm state, following what we told him. How time flew! Two hours
saw our success in drilling a small hole and then we would cut the safe.
Luckily, there came the good news that the mother, who calmed down, offered
us some relative possible combinations.
Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate typed in the
correct code. “Click!” the door of the safe opened, followed by a burst of
cheers. Out came the boy, wiping his eyes, sobbing. Everyone in the scene felt
the stone in their hearts fell down to the ground. The mother came over and
hugged the boy tightly, as if they reunited after a long separation, thanking us
again and again. Nothing could be better than participating in an inspiring
rescue. Though I had been joining in hundreds of missions of helping others,
it was this time that confirmed me most the duty of a firefighter.
We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting with a drill.
We taught the boy to put his hands over his ears while we were drilling and to take
them off only when we shook the safe. He was sweaty and his clothes were wet frombreathing in that tiny space for so long. But he was so calm the whole time, following
our commands and talking to us. We made a hole in the back. It was dangerous, but I
was confident that we could get him out safely.
Then, just as we started to make the first cut, my workmate typed in the correct
code. We’d asked the mother again to write down any significant date and it turned
out to be her brother’s birthday. We were amazed. We had been trying for three hours
and now all of a sudden this little boy was standing in front of me, rubbing his eyes.
His parents were so happy that he was out. He had a hug with his tearful mother, a
checkup from the doctor, and then went for a shower happily.

We were fully prepared at this point to open the safe by force, starting with a drill.
Upon learning that a drill would be used, the mother's anxiety surged, tears brimmingover as she pleaded for us to try other combinations. Perceiving her distress, my
colleague and I simultaneously offered comforting words and gently prompted her to
reflect on any other potential codes. In the meantime, I approached the safe, and knelt
down beside the boy, gently urging him to cover his ears and stay calm amid the
impending noise. Surprisingly, the boy remained composed, unlike his distraught
mother, responding calmly to our reassurances. The room was filled with tension as
we positioned the drill against the cold steel surface of the safe.

Several minutes passed, but no help came. The oppressive silence in the lift was
punctuated only by Mrs. Lim’s labored breathing and the distant echo of our own
heartbeats. Anxiety tightened its grip as the air grew thicker, the oppressive heat
mingling with the scent of old metal. I rubbed my palms on my pants, trying to soothe
the growing sense of panic. My eyes darted around, desperate for any sign of a
change, any hint that someone had heard our calls for help.
