1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My cousin Allen, 19 years old, was the coolest star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted
to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the
Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in
one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked. A jeep stopped
beside the small ranger station. Allen told me that our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from
the highway.
Only when we made it to our campsite, did I realize that we were really in the middle of nowhere. Somehow
I was a bit worried. Luckily, Allen appeared to know all the tricks of an experienced camper. Soon after we
gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a
day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures
when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way
to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around
the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm
again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
续写要求:1、续写词数应为150左右;2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Wake up! Jim! Our tent is on fire!” Allen awoke me in panic.

The Araguaia River is one of the biggest rivers in Brazil. It is home to thousands of animals, including bright
blue and yellow macaws. River dolphins swim and play in the water, and there are many different colored fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan would walk along the river every day. But looking at the river
made him worry because there was rubbish everywhere. He saw plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food
packages. The water looked dark and ugly.
At school, Rhenan asked about the dirty river. “You wouldn’t want trash in your house,” said his teacher.
“Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It didn’t seem right to him
that this big, powerful river was filled with trash. “It’s hurting the animals in my area,” he thought. “And it’s also
hurting the families who live here.”
Then Rhenan had an idea. The next morning, Rhenan talked to his mother about his plan for the river. He
wanted to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all worked together, they could clean up
the river! Rhenan’s mother loved his idea. “I believe the most important thing for you, Rhenan, is learning how to
change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever,” she told him. She told him she would help him
all along the way.
The next day, Rhenan went to the police department. Then he went to the Mayor’s office. He visited other
schools, offices, and businesses. Soon he had a very big group of people who liked his idea!

Beyond the Horizon
Oshima was sitting at the sea side but the beautiful site did not make her feel good. Her face was dull and
gloomy. She was staring at the setting sun without an expression on her face.
But she was not an unhappy child like this always. Six months before, Oshima was a happy child who loved
playing at the beach with her brother and sister. Her brother Mittsu used to make sandcastle and Oshima and her
sister Osheen collected the sea shells. Her father always shouted, “Come home, it's late”, but they would not listen.
The seaside was like their second home. At house also, they were a happy family who always laughed and played
and had no problems to bother for.
One day all of a sudden something terrible happened. A violent tsunami came and took the entire country in
its grip. It was a huge natural disaster. Most of the houses were washed away. The cities and towns were flooded
with water. Oshima’s town was near the sea and so the tsunami flooded her town as well. Her house was washed
and they lost all their belongings.
Her grandmother Midori cried and cried and was totally shocked. She has not seen such destruction in her
whole life. They were homeless. Oshima wept and wept and complained that why a violent tsunami hit her city. She
was very angry.
The government shifted them to a refugee (难民) camp where many families shared the living space.
Helicopters dropped food packets and they had to stand in long queues even for drinking water. Their life had
turned upside down. Oshima could see the sadness visible in her parents' eyes. Now she did not like the sea at all
and always felt that the sea had broken her trust and was very disappointed with the waves. For her the sea was
very cruel who had taken her beautiful house away.

When the sun rose one summer morning, Mark, a high school student, was riding his bike on the way to
school as usual. He admired the attractive sights along the road with colorful flowers on both sides, and fresh air
full of pleasant smell. It seemed to be a great day.
Mark was passing a park when he noticed an elderly woman walking about 100 meters ahead slowly falling
down onto the ground. He felt his heart standing still with great concern. With nobody else around to turn to for
help, Mark decided to ride over to see what was wrong with her for himself.
As he approached the old lady, he found her lying on the ground and looking pale and weak. Judging from
her untidy clothes and messy hair, she might have been out for more than one day.
“Are you all right, Granny?” Shaking her arm, Mark asked anxiously. The old lady opened her eyes, a
confused and lost expression on her face. She hesitated and then took a closer look. Immediately a big smile
appeared on her face. Grasping Mark’s hand, she said with shining eyes, “John, there you are at last! My son, I’m
hungry... hungry... Give me food...” She repeated, patting herself on the stomach.
Not knowing what to do, Mark anxiously asked her, “Granny, where is your home? Can you tell me who
your son is?” But the old lady didn’t respond, only mumbling (嘟囔), “I’m hungry. Give me food, John.”
Obviously, she mistook Mark for her son.
All of a sudden, Mark realized the old lady might be a patient with Alzheimer’s (痴呆症)disease because his
own late grandpa used to suffer from such a condition. “She might have gone out without being noticed by her
family. They must have been worried about her. Maybe they’re searching like crazy for her everywhere.” Mark
thought to himself, “But she is so starved. I must give her some food before I get in touch with her family.”

David’s parents left him forever in a car accident. He was brought up by his dear grandma, who was now in
her eighties and in poor health. David was so excellent at his studies that he was admitted into his ideal college. He
developed friendship with Christ when they were seated next to each other on the first college day. They were like
brothers.
Whenever Christ was challenged with those difficult courses, David was always there to help Christ. Christ
showed his thanks to David from the bottom of his heart, saying, “Without your help, I couldn’t get on well with
my studies. I really don’t know how to repay your help.” David responded, “We are good friends. It’s natural for us
to help each other.”
It was the early morning of Saturday. David had a fever and couldn’t get out of bed. Christ took good care of
him. He cooked David some soup and then gave him some medicine. He thought a sound sleep would help David
get better. David felt comforted with the care of his friend. Then he fell asleep.
David didn’t know how long it had been before he woke up. He saw some food which was newly cooked on
the table and there was also a note, which read, “Take the food and you will get better. I need to be away for several
days. Take good care of yourself. Christ.” He didn’t detail David about what he was going to do. Later someone
told David that Christ bought a bus ticket to David’s hometown. David felt confused. But he thought that maybe
Christ had something personal to attend to and it was not suitable to tell him.
On Monday, David got better and went to classes. Obviously, Christ was not there. He missed the classes.

When you find someone made a mistake, which would you choose, being right or being nice?
At ages five and eight, Bobby and I would spend our usual Saturday with Grandpa, cleaning his house.
Grandpa was only in his late fifties. His own dad had died early, so he didn’t go to school but ran the family
farm to raise his family. Because of that, his skills consisted of being able to sign his name, read his grandchildren’s
names, and do simple sums in his head.
Then I didn’t understand the poverty and limited opportunities Grandpa lived with. A little food was the only
items in his small refrigerator. He worked as a night guard for several companies, and the highlight of his week was
the reward he gave my brother and me for cleaning.
After we were done, Grandpa would put on his only suit, and we’d head to town. As we walked, Grandpa
would greet every person he met along the way. Everyone had a story to share, and Grandpa would stand quietly,
always smiling, and listen with great appreciation.
When we’d finally arrive at Grandpa’s favorite diner, the waitresses would all greet him as a long-lost elder.
Bobby and I split an adult plate, and Grandpa either had a cup of soup or a cup of coffee, talking about how well we
cleaned his place, telling anyone who would listen every step of every task we accomplished. Every waitress would
make sure they came up to say “hi” to Grandpa and congratulate his grandkids on their work. It may have been a
diner, but it was our another home.
When dinner was over, the waitress would bring the check and slide it over to Grandpa. One day it was
Gloria, and like always she bent close to him and told him the amount of the check (knowing that he couldn’t read
the paper).
Grandpa carefully dug into the pocket and brought out a broken coin purse. He carefully laid out the bills and
coins. Then he gave Gloria a very very small tip. I was ashamed that he had got it wrong and that he—we—would
be embarrassed.

A disability only becomes a disability when you allow it to stop you from being genuinely happy and
spreading happiness to others.
In a high school in Missouri, there is a remarkable student named Ryheem Lumpkins. At the age of 16,
Ryheem displayed a tough spirit that challenged physical limitations. While his arms and hands hadn’t fully
developed, he still managed to land a part-time job as a cashier at a local pizza restaurant.
Although he had only been employed for a month, Ryheem’s work ethic shone exceptionally bright. When
it’s not so busy at the counter, he would grab a broom to sweep the floors or carefully clean the buffet. Despite his
disability, he had such enthusiasm for life that he even got his driver’s license and worked hard to save money to
buy his first car.
As a naturally shy individual, this new job unexpectedly revealed his hidden positive character. Interacting
with new people, engaging in conversations, and delivering services became a source of excitement for him.
One fateful day, a customer named Robert Samay recognized the exceptional personality of young Ryheem.
The young cashier left a lasting impression on Mr. Samay, leading him to commit an act of kindness that would
astonish Ryheem and warm the hearts of those who witnessed it.
Impressed by Ryheem’s personality, Mr. Samay decided to express his appreciation. He slipped a five-dollar
bill into Ryheem’s hands and spoke words that sympathized deeply within the teenager’s soul. “I appreciate your
infectious smile and your exceptional attitude,” Mr. Samay said warmly. “Such qualities are rare these days,
especially among young individuals.”
Ryheem’s eyes gleaned with gratitude as he thanked Mr. Samay, his voice earnest and sincere. He carefully
folded the five-dollar bill, tucking it into his pocket with a smile that could light up a room. The warmth of the kind
gesture infused Ryheem with a sense of validation and empowerment, reminding him that his disabilities did not
define him. The sight of joy that lightened Ryheem’s face as he received the modest tip remained impressive in Mr.
Samay’s memory.

When I lived in Portland, Oregon, I taught English as a Second Language at a local community college. I had
adult students in my class from Vietnam, Mexico, Russia and many other countries. Although they came from many
lands, fighting for a better life, they had one thing in common: a desperate yearning(渴望) to learn English well.
Many of the students worked in a factory for twelve hours throughout the night and hurriedly took a bus in
the morning straight to our 8:00A.M. class. They attended my class on time whatever the weather. And they
waited until after class to go home and sleep. Sometimes I would see them struggling to keep their eyes open in the
beginning. However, their active participation in class drove away their physical tiredness as well as livened up the
atmosphere. Some students even raised a bunch of questions by gesture after class. They were always there
working hard, earnest and eager to learn.
Despite their lack of sleep and long hours at work, the level of attendance and attentiveness in class was
always excellent. No one called in sick. No one was absent-minded. Some of the students had as many as three jobs
and took the bus everywhere they went because they couldn’t afford cars.
To teach the course, I needed to use a lot of pictures and hand gestures, since I didn’t know all their
respective languages. One of the things I taught was a simple dialogue called “Shopping for a New Coat”. They
enjoyed standing up and acting out the gestures that accompanied the text of the story.
Sometimes I wondered if I was really teaching my students in the best way possible. But I gave my all to this
class, and they gave their all to me. If nothing else, they would always remember what to say if they ever went
“shopping for a new coat”. Soon, the language course came to an end.

In Mr. Russo’s classroom, excitement filled the air as he announced, “We’re down to our final two spellers!”
Jasmine couldn’t hide her joy, confident she was going to win. Finn, her competitor, reached out for a handshake,
wishing her good luck. But Jasmine replied with a smile, “Luck has nothing to do with it,” leaving Finn
embarrassed.
Then, it was Finn’s turn to spell his word. “Apology,” Finn took a deep breath and spelled, but he got it
wrong. Jasmine watched closely, waiting for her turn. When she spelled “apology”, she stressed the letters Finn
missed. After spelling the final word “Arrogant” (傲慢), Jasmine was announced the winner.
At lunch, Jasmine couldn’t stop herself from showing off as she walked by Finn and his friends. “How hard
can it be to spell a few words?” she bragged (吹牛). Before they could answer, she walked away with pride.
The big day of the spelling bee showed Jasmine a different picture. Surrounded by older students, she started
to doubt herself for the first time. She hadn’t thought about the tougher words she might face. A comment from
Josh, a fourth grader, that “apology” was an “easy” word, made her worry. “Maybe I should have studied the list of
words Mr. Russo gave the class,” Jasmine thought to herself.
As Principal Lopez introduced each of the spellers, cheers from each student’s classmates came from
different areas of the hall. When Jasmine’s name was announced, most of Mr. Russo’s class clapped for her except
Finn, who seemed to be looking at her angrily.
As the bee went on, Jasmine felt increasingly nervous with each word spelled right by others. Finally, it was
her turn. Jasmine walked slowly to the front of the stage, her earlier confidence now mixed with caution. The
audience watched, waiting. “Please spell ‘caterpillar’,” Principal Lopez asked.
Jasmine’s heart sank as she didn’t know the word.

A “Hearty” Welcome
Chase counted his gifts one more time as he put a small toy into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one,
twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.
“Yep! I’m ready for the Children’s Day party tomorrow!” Chase said.
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms Robins and
looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms, Robins, “Will someone volunteer to show her around today?”
Chase raised his hand. He liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.“Thanks,
Chase,” Ms. Robins said, “Now let’s get busy with our work so we’re done in time for the party.” That’s when
Chase realized he didn’t have a present for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’
desks covered with gifts of toys, candies and pencils while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad.
During the break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At
lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. As the lunch server
placed a heart-shaped cake on Chase’s tray, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included heart-shaped
paper cards with the gifts they exchanged. On the paper cards, kids would like to write their sweet wishes. As he sat
down at his table, an idea popped into his head.
When they were back to the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins
smiled. “That’s very thoughtful,” she said, “Let’s go for it.”
During math time, Chase invited Eva to work at a math station with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back
to the room so she wouldn’t notice her new classmates passing around a big paper heart that Ms. Robins had just
created.

About six months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one personal trainer who worked out. He did
his routine with such a quiet determination that he made it all look very easy. When I wanted to quit, I watched him
push himself to his own limits, and I found myself motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) effortlessly. I asked him if I could try a chin-
up. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up
without thinking... Once...then twice. I had no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind
me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull. It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did two. Again on day
three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he was impressed with my chin-ups,
explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be
doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped in and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day at the gym. I continued
to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could feel my strength increasing and my
determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes. He smiled and said,
“You know, you’ve come a long way in such a short time. I believe it’s time to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked,
“What do you have in mind?” He replied, “How about aiming for ten consecutive (连续不断的) chin-ups? I have
no doubt that you can achieve it with your insistence.”

One sunny Saturday morning, I got ready for a hike with my classmates. I was so excited about it since it
was my first time to go hiking. I ate a light breakfast just a few slices of bread and an egg. After that I grabbed my
backpack and hurriedly ran out of my house and then met my classmates at the school gate. At that time I didn’t
think that there would be a terrible disaster ahead.
The jungle (丛林) that we are going to was far from our area. Its name was Salymbia Jungle. The drive was
3 hours long but it was not a dull ride as we were all eager about the hike and we bad each other’s company. We
appointed a guide and his name was Thomas. He said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times, and he
was familiar with the pathways. When we arrived, Thomas allowed us to begin. There were a wide variety of plants
which I had never seen before. The smell of the jungle was so earthy. All of us were amazed by the beauty of the
scenery and the sound of the creatures.
After a while we were walking and then I looked at my wrist (手腕) to check the time but then I realized my
watch had fallen off. Then I walked back without telling anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were
other persons behind and I thought I would have been able to catch up with my classmates. I went back searching
the pathway and I lost track of time and lost sight of my classmates. I immediately realized that I was alone.
After I realized I was lost, the first thing I did was to check my phone to see how far away I was from my
companions. However, I was having no luck because there was no network in my phone, which made my phone
practically useless.

My Father, My Hero
I consider my father to be the most important person in my life. This is not because he is famous or wealthy.
We do not have a big car, and there are no old, expensive vases or paintings in our house. Rather, what I value
about my father is the care and love he shows for me and my family. What blesses my father most is being able to
put food on the table and a roof over our heads.
My father might work hard, but he is always there for us. Whenever I trip or hurt myself playing sports, he's
there to pick me up. My brother and I grew up with his constant care and the funny nursery rhymes and stories he
told us.
My father also helps our local community. My father has been successful as he never shrinks from helping
others. People also like him because he often has a smile on his face. He is optimistic and finds good in all
situations. He is great at problem-solving, and his favorite phrases are “Don't worry! It’s not worth it” and “It will
be all right—just you wait and see”. He is always right! And I have learnt from him the need to be patient and
honest, and to care for other people.
I can well remember that when my mother and father got married, they did not have much money. The
situation got worse when they had children. When we were very young, my father had an extra job as a hotel porter,
and he also mopped the floor of a hotel every night so that he could give us a special treat or a vacation. At the start
of last year, my father began putting at least fifty cents every day into a jar on a shelf in his bedroom. We all
wondered what he was saving the money for, but he refused to tell us.

At the cafeteria table, I overheard my new colleague say, “I hate going home tonight, because we have to get
rid of our dog.” I said, “Oh, no! Is your dog ill?” She replied, “No, she’s fine, just not a fit for our family. No one
wants her, so it’s best we give it away.”
Coming from a family whose home could be a petting zoo, I was shocked to think that people could be so
heartless. Worried by this dog’s fate, I asked my new co-worker a few questions. She shared that the dog’s name
was Lady. She was a German Shepherd and had been trained for a year and a half as a guide dog for the blind.
Unfortunately, Lady failed her final test because she demanded too many hugs after completing her tasks. I begged
the woman to give me a little time to reach out to my mom as we would consider taking her. With my talent for
dramatic storytelling and my mom’s compassionate heart, I knew Lady would have a home with us.
After work, I drove to pick up Lady. An old woman greeted me at the door, leading me to the kitchen. There
sat the beautiful but very thin dog, sitting in the corner licking and scratching her right paw. “She did that to
herself,” the woman said as she pointed to the injured paw. She continued, “That dog is hopeless!” The woman then
took a broom and pushed the dog to stand. Lady had tears in her eyes when I led her outside.
There were no goodbyes from this family, just a sense of relief that Lady was no longer their problem. I sat on
the sidewalk with her and introduced myself. For me, it was love at first sight. She had perfect markings, a delicate,
beautiful face, but the saddest eyes. “Lady,” I said, “I’m taking you to your new home with my family who will
always love you. Please give us a chance.”

On the plains of northwest Oklahoma, you can see for miles: nothing but grass, masses of evergreen trees and
steep red-rock canyons(峡谷). But with my telescope, I could see the helicopters, one after another clearly,
dumping water on a wildfire in the far distance. I wasn’t concerned by the small cloud of smoke snaking skyward.
It had to be at least 50 miles away, even across the South Canadian River.
That afternoon, my uncle Larry, my cousin Tony and I had driven to this 4, 000-acre farm for a three-day hunt.
I took a few pictures of bushy trees and grand canyons. Then I sent some of them with my cellphone to my wife,
Ande, who was 60 miles away. “There’s nothing to worry about. Just have a nice day.” I typed. She had seen the
fire on the news and called a few minutes earlier to warn me. Anyway, I didn’t want her to be worried.
The wind had picked up, blowing hard from the southwest. We climbed into the vehicle, with Larry driving, to
look for places to hunt the turkeys the next day. We headed north along a small road and stopped here and there to
look for signs of turkeys.
We drove for about a mile before Larry turned to head back south, toward the farmhouse. As we did, my eyes
went wide. A wall of flames was racing toward us, maybe three quarters of a mile away. “Get us out of here!” I
screamed. Larry speeded up the vehicle, bouncing hard along the small road. How had the fire jumped over the
river? The flames would be on us in no time. With a fence blocking the way, we jumped out of the vehicle. Then I
made a phone call to Ande. “We’re surrounded by fire,” I shouted over the howling wind. “Call 911! We need a
helicopter to get us out of here.” The connection went dead.

I looked around, but I couldn’t see Larry and Tony.
