A birthday surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn
chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side.
Papa's hand absently stroked （抚摩） the head of his old companion as they
dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. “He does this day
after day?” I asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. “I don't know what to do for him. There is a
strong desire in his eyes that I can't satisfy -a desire for the past. The past can't be
brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever,” Mama
sighed.
“I'm going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee: “What are you and Ralph
thinking about all these hours you spend out here?” I asked.
“We're not thinking,” he said softly. “We're wishing." I sat on the grass beside his
chair.“Wishing for what?”“For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always
told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing
to work hard for it," I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. “But Ralph and I
have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually
impossible.”“Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?” I asked.Papa grinned （咧嘴大笑），and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his
dream becoming a reality. “Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the
lake again.We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating
sandwiches,"Papa said.
Yes,I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves
on the lake on weekends. They'd start for home when the sun went down, totally
satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old
and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the
lake again at first.But eventually I managed to convince her.

下水文
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. Together,
we gathered supplies and worked tirelessly to refurbish the old boat. It was a labor oflove, as each of us spared no effort to seal close the cracked wooden planks, repaint
its body, and even mend the old fishing nets. We needed to be 100 per cent sure that
the boat was not only seaworthy but also a vessel that could carry the weight of Papa's
dreams. Despite the challenges and doubts, our determination never wavered, fueled
by our communal desire to bring joy back into Papa’s life. Ultimately, with a ribbon
tied around its head and the engine purring softly, the old ship was restored to its
former glory.
On the day of Papa’s birthday, we were all eager to give him a surprise. As the
sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a warm glow over the lake, we led Papa down
to the shore where the refurbished boat awaited him. His eyes widened in disbelief as
he took in the sight, speechless with emotion. With trembling hands, he stepped
aboard, his face radiating with a childlike ecstasy that filled our hearts with joy.
Together, Papa, Ralph, and I set sail into the tranquil waters, the echoes of laughter
mingling with the gentle lapping of the waves, a testament to the power of love and
the magic of fulfilling dreams. Indeed, nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly
enough and were willing to work hard for it.

decided to fix up the old boat. The boat didn't fall apart, and the paint had
faded and cracked. We spent several weekends repairing and painting the boat.
I replaced the faded and cracked seat cushions while my friends repaired the
motor. We expected Papa to be proud of the boat as he and Ralph went out
on the lake again. Tired as we were, we were happy to complete the
restoration. I wouldn't let off the secret until Papa's birthday.
Then came the day and we were all eager to give him a surprise. He
could hardly believe his eyes when we showed him the new boat. Then we
said "Happy birthday" to him in chorus, and he was so touched that tears
blurred his eyes. After that, we put sandwiches and dog biscuits on it while
Mama also bought Papa a new hat. Soon, we all stood by the lake and
watched as Papa and Ralph sailed away, Papa waving and laughing. Seeinghim so happy, I felt that everything I did for him was rewarding.

not rocket science gradually sank in. The engine could still work.What we

⑤一看到小船在柔和的月光下漂浮在河上，我就露出了灿烂的笑容，期待着小

On seeing（一看到 on doing） the boat floating on the river against the
mellow moonlight, I cracked a toothy smile, expecting the boat could bring
happiness to my Papa. Harboring the expectation （分词短语作状语），I
waited for his birthday to come eagerly.

We told Papa about the plan.
①所有帮我修船的朋友都来我家了。拉尔夫被这么多年轻人包围着，兴奋地摇
着尾巴。爸爸还没弄明白发生了什么，我们就把他带到了湖边，拉尔夫跟在后
面。
All my friends who had helped fix up the boat came to my home. Surrounded by
so many young souls, Ralph shook his tail excitedly. Before Papa
could figure out what was happening (before引导时间状语从句）， we led him to
the lake, followed by Ralph.
②爸爸刚看到湖面上漂着的船，他就站在地上，眼睛盯着我们，难以置信地喊
道：“不可能！你们把船修好了！”他的声音里带着兴奋。
Hardly had Papa spotted the boat floating on the lake when（一...就...when 倒装）
