But the weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was fantastic, and my training beforehand was just enough — I finished the race! It was an amazing feeling! My favorite marathon was the one in Reykjavik, Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country and the scenery along the course was breathtaking. The most difficult race was in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it was really hot. But, my biggest mistake was that I forgot to pack my running shoes! Can you believe it? So, the day before the race, I had to buy new shoes and during the race, my feet were pretty painful! In St. Petersburg, which is in Russia, I managed to finish in third place! This was a real shock. After my last race in Bangkok, Thailand, I had completed my challenge. I still enjoy running. I’m currently preparing for a full marathon in Stockholm. And maybe I’ll try running 20 marathons in the new year! A Yunnan offers exciting experiences of unique customs. Aurelio us Woolfolk, however, does a lot more than sit at a desk when he is in school. He climbs up high ladders, walks down the sides of buildings, and rides in a fire engine. He is learning to be a firefighter at the New Haven Fire Academy. Woolfolk and 28 other students are currently learning what it takes to become a firefighter. For two days each week, the students sit in a classroom to learn the science of fires, how to calculate water pressure, and how to treat medical emergencies. During the other three days, the students go outside and learn how to hook hoses (塑料管, 软管) to fire hydrants (消防栓), climb buildings, rescue people trapped in burning buildings, and many other things. “Firefighters have to know lots of different things,” said Pablo Menendez, an instructor at the school. “We have to treat medical emergencies, know how to handle dangerous chemicals, and rescue people who have fallen from mountains.” Teamwork is one of the most important lessons students learn at the school. “Working together saves lives,” said Capt. William Seward, the director of the academy. “Students need to learn that they are part of a team.”Fighting fires is not easy. The suits and equipment a firefighter wears weigh about 40 pounds. Firefighters are very busy. In New Haven, they respond to 32, 000 emergency calls a year. Each time firefighters go out, they know they might not comeback. “That’s why the lessons learned here at the academy are so important,” said Seward. “What they learn here can save their lives.” Firefighters know how dangerous their jobs are. Their training helps them overcome their fear of heights and fires. “When you’re up there on the ladder looking down, it’s scary,” said one student. “To do this job, you’ve got to wipeout the fear.” Firefighters overcome their fear for one reason. “I wanted to help other people,” said Leah Harwin. “I think it is important to help other people whenever you can.” 24.According to the text, which activity does a student at New Haven Fire Academy complete? A.Calculating the weight of suits. B.Hooking hoses to ladders. C.Walking down the fire hydrants. D.Dealing with dangerous chemicals. 25.What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph? A.Most students at the school are great team players. B.Some firefighters are much more skilled than others. C.Firefighters must work together to do the job successfully. D.Firefighters are most successful when they work on their own. 26.Why do students at the Fire Academy have lessons both inside and outside the classroom? A.Because they make students overcome the fear of heights. B.Because they teach students how to calm down in emergency. C.Because they provide students with overall skills to save lives. D.Because they get students to know how to wear heavy suits and equipment. 27.What is the writing purpose of this text? A.To inform the readers of the dangers of being a firefighter. B.To introduce the activities at the New Haven Fire Academy. C.To compare the New Haven Fire Academy to public school. D.To persuade students to attend the New Haven Fire Academy. 根据第三段中的“We have to treat medical emergencies, know how to handle dangerouschemicals, and rescue people who have fallen from mountains.(我们必须处理医疗紧急情况,知道如何处理危 险化学品,并营救从山上坠落的人。)” 根据第四段中的“Teamwork is one of the most important lessons students learn at the school. 根据第二段中的“For two days each week, the students sit in a classroom to learn the science of fires, how to calculate water pressure, and how to treat medical emergencies. During the other three days, the students go outside and learn how to book hoses to fire hydrants, climb buildings, rescue people trapped in buring buildings, and many other things.(每周有两天,学生们坐在教室里学习火灾科学、如何计算水压以及如何处 理医疗紧急情况。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Aurelious Woolfolk, however, does a lot more than sit at a desk when he is in school.(然而,Aurelio us Woolfolk在学校里做的远不止坐在桌子旁。)”以及“He is learning to be a fire tighter at the New Haven Fire Academy.(他正在纽黑文消防学院学习当消防员。)”和第二段 中的“Woolfolk and 28 other students are currently learning what i takes to become a firefighter(Woolfolk和其他 28名学生目前正在学习如何成为一名消防员。)” B。 C We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss. But the most toxic relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But ifs not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but belittle your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion. Everyone knows how relationships like that can tie your stomach into a knot. But groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships canbe damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships. I had assumed that with a neighbor or a colleague, having some positive interactions was better than all negative interactions. But being cheered on by the same person who cuts you down doesn’t reduce the bad feelings; it increases them. And it’s not just in your head: It leaves a trace in your heart and your blood. Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people gave impromptu speeches on controversial topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.” The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is strong, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves. The most intuitive reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. Feeling unsure can disrupt the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel. Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more upsetting to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone stabs you in the back, it stings more if he’s been friendly to your face. 28.Which of the following can be counted as a frenemy? A.Your neighbour’s kid who advises you to study hard but idles away his own time. B.Your classmate who admires your diligence at first, but doubts your intelligence later. C.Your mother’s friend who encourages you to spend more time on homework but less on smart phones. D.Your father’s colleague who proposes you to do a moderate amount of homework while ensuring adequate sleep. 29.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage? A.Ambivalent relationships have a permanent effect on your well-being. B.The common cause for high blood pressure is ambivalent relationship. C.Ambivalent interactions will be more painful if it is done consciously. D.The negative impact of ambivalent interactions is direct and strong. 30.The underlined word “belittle” in paragraph 2 probably means ______. A.devalue B.appreciate C.respect D.abuse31.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A.Some Negative Relationships Are Bad for Your Health B.Your Most Ambivalent Relationships Are the Most Toxic C.The Reasons for Ambivalent Relationships Are Unpredictable D.Some Positive Relationships Are Better than All Negative Ones 【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据文章第二段“They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But ifs not just friends. It’s the in- laws who volunteer to watch your kids but belittle your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.(他们是一种混合了正面和负面情绪的关系。 B“Your classmate who admires your diligence at first, but doubts your intelligence later.(你 的同学,一开始钦佩你的勤奋,但后来怀疑你的智力。)” 根据文章第四段“But being cheered on by the same person who cuts you down doesn’t reduce the bad feelings; it increases them. And it’s not just in your head: It leaves a trace in your heart and your blood.(但是,被击倒你的同一个人鼓舞并不能减少你的不良情绪;它增加了它们。 以及文章第五段“Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people gave impromptu speeches on controversial topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”(即使是 一个矛盾的相互作用也会造成伤害。 根据划线单词下一句“The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.(表扬你的工作却不给你升职的经理。)” 故选A。 31. 根据文章第三段“Everyone knows how relationships like that can tie your stomach into a knot. But groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.(每个人都知道这样的关系会让你的胃打个结。 B。 D If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no value.Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense? One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Acronauics and Space Administration (NASA) missions, and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry. Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many technologies it provides ides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents resulted from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation (隔热板) in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle. There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as those technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the terrible aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives. .32.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed? A.By offering analyses. B.By making comparisons. C.By listing figures. D.By presenting research findings. 33.The function of Jaws of Life is to________. A.save people from traffic accidents B.do experiments on the space shuttle C.keep houses warm and energy efficient D.separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets 34.In the author’s opinion, space exploration . A.has changed our life completely B.benefits us in many ways C.costs too much of our time D.has nothing to do with us 35.What would be the best title for the text? A.Benefits of space exploration. B.How to make space exploration affordable? C.Is space exploration worth the cost? D.Missions of the NASA space shuttle program. 【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.C 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。 根据第二段“One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. But now some experts say that to think drinking water equals health is taking things too far and that hydration(水合作用)is about the balance between electrolytes(电解 质)like sodium and the water in your body. Then. how much water do you need to drink? Many say you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Not so, some experts say. 36 A 200-pound person who hikes 10 miles in the heat needs more water than a 120-pound office manager in a temperature-controlled building. 37 Someone with a heart condition or kidney stones has one level of need. A person taking diuretic drugs(利尿药)may need a different amount of water. You may need to change the amount you are drinking if you lave been ill with vomiting or diarrhea. Water is a better choice than sugary sodas or fruit juices. 38 One popular idea is that caffeine or alcohol will make your body lose much water. But one study showed the effect is not significant. You also get water from what you eat. Fruits, vegetables, and soups all add to the intake of water. Your body will tell you if you are hydrated enough. You don't have to think about it or add up the ounces you drink. 39 Electrolytes are essential minerals. 40 Some sports drinks ads say you need to add electrolytes to stay healthy. But some experts say that your body produces electrolytes. You may need more water if you exercise a lotduring the heat of the day. Otherwise, most people get enough electrolytes from food. A.Just drink then you are thirsty. B.They are vital to many functions in the body C.It gives you more energy and makes you look good. D.Instead, your body and the activities you attend matter. E.It is also necessary to set a timetable about when to drink water. F.The amount of water you need in a day also depends on your health. G.But when it comes to hydration, any drink can add water to your system. 36.根据空前“how much water do you need to drink?” 38.根据空后“You also get water from what you eat.”该句表明人们可以从吃的事物中获取水,其中 “also”,说明前面已经提出了一个人体中水的来源,G项“any drink can add water to your system.”符合要求, 且与第一句“Water is a better choice than sugary sodas or fruit juices.”连贯,“any drink”与“sugary sodas or fruit juices”对应,故选G项。 39.根据空前“Your body will tell you if you are hydrated enough.”(你的身体会告诉你体内的水是否充 足。)“You don't have to think about it or add up the ounces you drink.”(你不必思考这个问题也不必增加喝水 量。) Our neighborhood was struck by a fierce storm just several days ago. Don’t be frightened by sharks: you are 30 times much likely to be hit by lightening than be attacked by a shark. 去掉but 2. being→beings 3.great前加the 4.Contrarily→Contrary 5.were→are 6.above→below 7.Final→Finally 8.into→in 9.unless→if 10.much→more 【导语】本文是说明文。 故将were改为are。 6. Thirdly… 故 将into改为in。 9. 故将much改为more。 参考词汇:春节The Spring Festival;庆祝celebrate;前夕eve;彻底的thorough;零花钱 lucky money ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________ 【答案】 The Spring Festival As you know, the Spring Festival is the most colorful and important festival in China.
