One crisp autumn day, he came across a young squirrel in great pain. He noticed the squirrel’s delicate pa w
caught in a tangle of thorns (荆棘). The squirrel’s eyes, which were usually bright and full of curiosity, now held a
different story, glistened with a mixture of pain and fear.

clearing with some fallen trees and declared it the “play area”.
We kept going. Soon, I realized we were back on our side of the natural area, but we couldn’t find the path
back to our house. Using my phone’s GPS, I pointed us in the direction of our house. We climbed through the
brushes, snapping (折断) dry branches to make our way.
“Are we lost?” my daughter asked.
“Yes. I see where our house is, but I’m not sure of the best way to get back” I admitted.
So brave, she led the way through the thick, unmaintained forest.
“I wish it was night so the stars could guide us home,” she said.
After a particularly difficult climb through a series of bushes, we popped out into a backyard two doors down
