Due to climate changes, Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing.
This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson
Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean.
But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they
have begun to frequent beaches, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For
polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The shrinking (
减少) ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short
distances between ice sheets. But as the ice has shrunk, polar bears have been forced to swim longer
and longer distances in the open ocean. This poses a severe danger during rough weather, and an
increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay, the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago.
Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast (绝食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt.
Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier. Over the past 25 years, the average
weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg. This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already
the number of births has dropped by 15 percent. Unless the bears can learn to survive these climate
changes, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.
1.What is Arctic ice doing earlier each year?
A.It's freezing. B.It's hardening.
C.It's melting. D.It's expanding.
2.What is true of polar bears that are spending more time on land in Alaska?
A.Their young are dying. B.Their diet is changing.
C.Their health is improving. D.Their families are growing.
3.What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay?
A.They are having fewer young now. B.They suffer from various sicknesses.
C.They don't need stronger protection. D.They can't find enough good males.
4.In which publication would you most likely find this passage?
A.Medical News. B.Society Today.
C.Wildlife Journal D.Design Magazine.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.C
Due to climate changes, Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice
sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend
more time on land. There, they have begun to frequent beaches, feeding on the remains of whales
caught by native hunters.
Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears
has dropped 68 kg. This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has
dropped by 15 percent.
故选A。
This is creating problems for polar bears that
make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.(这给居住在阿拉斯加北部和哈德逊

Opened in September 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland is the second Disney Park in Asia. It
experienced a difficult time upon its opening. The Park, as well as two themed hotels, was built on
Lantau Island.
The Park opened to strong competition in the form of Ocean Park. Hong Kong Disneyland is
one of only two parks in Hong Kong, which has become one of the world's leading cities in recent
years. It kept Chinese cultural traditions in mind when they built the Park to avoid a cultural
backlash (抵制). Designers added to the custom of Feng Shui.
Disney and Hong Kong announced the Park in 1999, and construction began in 2003. The Park
had one of the shortest construction periods in Disney history. Disney actually announced that the
opening of the Park would be brought forward, from 2006 to September 2005.
The Park attracted 5.2 million visitors in its first year, below the expected 5.6 million. There
was a lack of attractions, with Fantasyland opening with just one dark ride. Summer Passes were
announced to increase the number of tourists. Autopia, Stitch Encounter and it's a Small World
opened between 2006 and 2008 to offer more attractions at the Park.
The number of tourists dropped in 2007 to just over 4 million, so Disney planned a big expansion (
扩大) project to attract more tourists and bring the Park back to its normal level. In July 2009, the
Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed a three-land expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, and in
2010, Toy Story Land opened.
These new attractions have certainly paid off, with the Park earning record profit (盈利) in
2013. In that year, over 7 million guests entered the Park.
With enough room for a second Park and the promise of more attractions to come, it seems that
there is indeed a great beautiful tomorrow for Hong Kong Disneyland.
5.What do we know about Hong Kong Disneyland upon its opening?
A.It was the best Disney Park in Asia. B.It wasn't very successful at first.
C.It didn't face much competition. D.It was against Chinese culture.
6.Compared to most other Disney parks, Hong Kong Disneyland ________.
A.is much smaller in size B.has more customs to consider
C.had a longer preparation for opening D.had a shorter period of time for construction
7.What's the author's attitude toward the future of Hong Kong Disneyland?
A.Hopeful. B.Worried.
C.Uninterested. D.Doubtful.
【答案】5.B 6.D 7.A

(2019·云南昆明·一模)Finding a mountain goat resting high on a cliff(悬崖) might thrill
many of the millions of tourists who visit Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park every year, but
park officials say it might be time for the bearded animals to go.
The problem, according to the park, is that Grand Teton’s 100 or so mountain goats threaten
The bighorn sheep numbered as many as 125 just a few years ago. The
strong goats spread disease and compete with bighorn sheep for food. Unlike small-sized bighorn
sheep, Grand Teton’s mountain goats aren’t native to the park. They were introduced to the park in
the 1960s.
Grand Teton spokeswoman Denise Germann said, “We’ve got a management responsibility to
protect the native species. After hearing from the public on the proposal (建议) in January, park
officials expect to decide as soon as mid-February on what to do about the mountain goats.”
The goats are reproducing rapidly. Now might be the best time to reduce the animals before
they’re too many to bring under control, according to the Park Service.
One wildlife biologist who studies bighorn sheep praised the proposal. Mountain goats’ original
habitat is nowhere close to where they’ve been introduced in the U.S. to provide hunting opportunities,
said Rob Roy Ramey II, with Nederland, Colorado-based Wildlife Science International, Inc.
Wildlife managers should get rid of mountain goats not only in Grand Teton but elsewhere to
help struggling bighorn sheep, Ramey said. “Unfortunately, state wildlife agencies sell nonnative
wildlife viewing opportunities to the public,” Ramey said. “This is not a zoo in the wilderness. It
should really be for native wildlife.”
1.What can be learnt about the bighorn sheep in the park?
A.Their size is huge. B.Their number is decreasing.
C.They arrived in the 1960s. D.They threaten local species.
2.How did the public help park officials protect the bighorn sheep?
A.By providing suggestions. B.By driving away mountain goats.
C.By volunteering in the park. D.By taking over Grand Teton National Park.
3.What is Germann’s attitude towards the bighorn sheep?
A.Curious. B.Proud.
C.Surprised. D.Concerned.
4.What was the purpose of bringing in mountain goats in the beginning?
A.To offer hunting chances.
B.To sell nonnative wildlife.
C.To satisfy wildlife managers.
D.To increase diversities of sheep.
