Suddenly, his daughter cried “Look!” Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, coming down. As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former sailor, realized it would land in the river. Without hesitation, he ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen river, far from shore, sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his previous training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot. Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So he and his son, John, pulled two kayaks (皮划艇) out. “If it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne said. The kayaks’ paddles (桨) proved too weak, so the pair tried using sticks to push the boats along. Their first attempts left them spinning in circles. But with effort, they made progress. When Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, surrounded by open water. Gelinne pushed his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot and thinking, “What if he panics? What if I fall over?” With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak’s bow. Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice. But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice. He needed help. Soon a police officer arrived and radioed for help. A boat from the local Department of Natural Resources appeared. It picked up the pilot, Steve 71, and rushed him to safety, who would be treated for minor injuries. Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, exhausted, to shore. The boat had arrived just in time, Gelinne recalled. “I’m 60 years old,” he says. “There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still, he was satisfied. 24. What was Gelinne’s first reaction to the air crash? A. Hesitant. B. Concerned. C. Scared. D. Surprised. 25. What can be learned from paragraph 4? A. The plane had sunk to the bottom. B. The pilot was nearly frozen to death. C. The kayaks got stuck in floating ice. D. The rescue was tougher than expected. 26. Why did Gelinne need help? A. Because his son didn’t help him. B. Because the kayaks were broken. C. Because the ice wasn’t solid enough. D. Because the pilot was too exhausted. 27. Which of the following can best describe Gelinne? A. Honest and independent. B. Modest and intelligent. C. Helpful and humorous. D. Generous and cautious. C I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right? I’m going to Scotland this year, and three different people told me I must watch "Outlander" before I go, which is like "Game of Thrones" for fans of romance novels. I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back . When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed. I had spent half a day on the couch. Research for Scotland? Not exactly. A few days later I had a library book due: The National Book Award winner The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez. I needed to finish it, so I read the last half straight through. I was absorbed in Nunez’s New York City, worrying about the heroin’s career and her future. I finished the book with tears in my eyes and stood up feeling, well, great. I had wasted another four hours on my couch. I hadn’t eaten as much junk food because I needed my hands free—and not sticky—so I could turn pages and return the book to the library relatively clean, but I hadn’t moved and once again it was dark outside. Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free? All the research says reading a book is good for you. It reduces stress, promotes comprehension and imagination, relieves depression, helps you sleep and may contribute to preventing Alzheimer’s(阿尔兹海默症). The act of physically turning a page creates a momentary pause for understanding to sink in. Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的 线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away. But there’s a lot of good TV now. I’d like to say the answer to TV versus books must be, as Aristotle said, "Moderation in all things," though he never had a television or a computer and had to read his scrolls by candlelight. I agree that too much television is bad for you. I know I feel better if I read, but it won’t stop me from watching too: My second DVD of "Outlander" has just arrived, and as soon as I get this essay done, the rest of my day is free. 28. By "I always nod and agree" (paragraph 1), the author implies that ______ . A. she doesn’t think highly of TV either B. she believes those who say they don’t watch TV C. she should be polite to get the conversation to go on D. she is not willing to admit that she watches television 29. The phrase "back to back" (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to " ______ ". A. from morning till night B. one after another without a break C. looking at the opposite direction D. leaning against the back of the couch 30. The author felt better after reading The Friend than watching "Outlander", most probably because ______ . A. she didn’t feel hungry for any snacks B. the TV series got her to cancel her trip to Scotland C. the television series was no more attractive than the book D. she regarded reading as more rewarding than watching TV 31. What can be concluded from all the research introduced in paragraph 5? A. Reading is active while watching TV is passive. B. Reading involves physical exercises while watching TV doesn’t. C. Reading stimulates the brain to concentrate while watching TV doesn’t. D. Reading is good for one’s mental health while watching TV is bad for it. D Musk, Hawking, Gates—the tech giants have redoubled their warnings about how we could destroy ourselves with technology. But they’re not talking about deliberately pushing buttons to trigger disaster. They mean accidentally killing ourselves with something that we invent for our benefit. It’s a little embarrassing to have to admit that accidental deaths are increasing in a world that our ancestors made safer for hundreds of years. Our grandparents saw the invention of the automobile, the bulldozer (推土机) and so on, and they made them all safer. However, nowadays, we put a smartphone on every hand, and now more than 1000 distraction-related crashes happen on our roads every day. Kids and pets die of heatstroke (中暑) inside cars—we are on track to set a new record for hot car deaths in 2021. We may not have to worry about AI, but our innovations are quietly outpacing our ability. We place blind trust in complex systems that reveal little about how they work. It seems that we have superhuman abilities, and consumers seem willing to play along. They drive at a speed of 80 mph with a phone and a cup of coffee, and they are proud of their multitasks. Sure, other people on phones are dangerous, but you can smoothly switch your attention and notice when any emergency occurs, right? When we misjudged a situation in the past, we got immediate feedback. But technology can place the consequences of our missteps at a distance. Delayed reactions, complex chain reactions—these are all part of how technology works. But having adapted to a world of new inventions, we are crazy about driverless cars, seldom stopping to consider what could go wrong later down the road. Worse still, technology is even hacking our feedback system. We get excited when we check our phone while driving. Edith Harbaugh, whose company, Launch Darkly, specializes in the controlled release of new technology into the wild, pointed out that we’re creating a dangerously unbalanced system of actions and rewards: “We are not given ice creams every time we do something safe.” So it is too late to worry about threatening technology, which is upon us. The modern world is breaking everything we know about staying safe. If we have any hope of staying alive with the rise of the machines, we are going to need to learn to survive the things we have today. 32. Why is the warning of tech giants mentioned in Paragraph 1? A. To give a definition. B. To highlight their wisdom. C. To offer background information. D. To introduce the topic. 33. Which is not the reason why technology is threatening? A. We trust complex systems blindly. B We create too many inventions. C. Our ability cannot keep pace with the innovations. D. Technology can’t give us feedback immediately. 34. If the passage continues, what may be talked about? A. The rise of the machines. B. The destruction of the world. C. The measures to deal with the problem. D. The worries about threatening technology. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Every Coin Has Two Sides B. Technology is Benefiting us C. Technology is Killing us D. How Should We Deal with Technology In a global world, employers often look for candidates with international experience, such as studies abroad or volunteer programs. 36 1. China has a variety of brocades, 56 (primary) Shu, Song, Yun and Zhuang brocades. Chengdu, with a reputation 57 the “Land of Abundance”, has a long history of brocade art. A tall official was checking all the athletes. “Number Three. John Fisher.” John nodded while a ripple of goosebumps (一 阵鸡皮疙瘩) shot up his backbone. He should be calm as he had trained pretty hard for the race. However, he had a headache and a sense of imbalance from his poor sleep the night before, Scenes of the last competition filled his head, when he had put in a good effort, doing what he thought was enough only to see another man beat him. The bitter taste of loss spread slowly in his mouth even now. Suddenly, John felt a “man” in black standing beside him, who looked quite familiar. He looked at John and sneered (讥 笑), “Hey. You are not good enough. You’re going to fail like in the last competition!” How dare he say that? John angrily punched (拳打) him, who, however, disappeared into thin air. John remembered the early mornings when he was the first to arrive at the training ground, pushing himself through one more set of exercises each time. Determined not to let this negative voice affect him, he took a deep breath and looked ahead. “Now, everyone, follow me,” the official said and led the group into the arena (运动场). John looked over at the other competitors, each dressed in a similar uniform, well-trained and prepared. John knew he had a tough race ahead of him. The “man” appeared and sneered again “Good luck. You’re going to need it!” Ignoring the “man” and the competitors, John placed his fingers against the starting line and put his body in position. “What should I do first?” he wondered, All the strategies he had planned the night before were gone. He could feel the eye of the crowd on him and he wasn’t ready. Paragraph 1: Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第 8 页 共 9 页______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第 9 页 共 9 页高一下第一次月考参考答案 1~5 BBACC 6~10 BABAC 11~15 CCAAB 16~20 CABAC 21-23 BBA 24-27 BDCC 28-31. Without hesitation, he ran down to the waterfront.(当飞机消失在树后时,曾经当过水手的 杰琳意识到它将降落在河中。 D。根据第四段中的 The kayaksˈ paddles(桨) proved too weak, so the pair tried using sticks to push the boats along. Their first attempts left them spinning in circles. But with effort, they made progress. When Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, surrounded by open water.(皮划艇的桨太弱了, 所以两人试着用棍子推动小船。 错误原因:A 项“The plane had sunk to the bottom”与文中“The plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen river” 矛盾;B 项“The pilot was nearly frozen to death”文中未提及;C 项“The kayaks got stuck in floating ice”文中未 提到皮划艇被卡。 26. C。根据第五段“With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak’s bow. Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot onto the shelf of unbroken ice. But each time Gelinne tried, the kayak broke through the ice. 错误原因:A 项“Because his son didn’t help him”与文中“with his son nearby”矛盾;B 项“Because the kayaks were broken”错误,文中提到“paddles proved too weak”,但皮划艇本身未坏;D 项“Because the pilot was too exhausted”文中未提及飞行员因疲劳无法配合。 27. C。根据第二段“As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former sailor, realized it would land in the river. Without hesitation, he ran down to the waterfront.(当飞机消失在树后时,曾经当过水手的 杰琳意识到它将降落在河中。他毫不犹豫地跑到水边)”可知,他一看到飞机降落在河中,就毫不犹豫地跑到 水边去救人,所以他是热于助人的,以及第五段“With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, “Just hang on to the kayak as if you were hugging your wife.”(儿子就在旁边,Gelinne 专注于让飞行员保 持冷静,他开玩笑说:“就像拥抱你的妻子一样,紧紧抓住皮艇。”)” 错误原因:A 项“Honest and independent”文中未提及;B 项“Modest and intelligent”虽有聪明成分,但未体现 谦逊;D 项“Generous and cautious”文中未提及慷慨,谨慎也不是其突出特点。 C 篇 28. A 29. B 30. D 31. I know I feel better if I read, but it won’t stop me from watching too:My second DVD of " Outlander" has just arrived, and as soon as I get this essay done, the rest of my day is free. I watched the first four hourlong episodes back to back . TV takes all that imagination away. Paragraph 1: Bang! John dashed out, but his foot almost slipped. He quickly regained his balance, his heart pounding in his chest. The adrenaline surged through him, pushing him forward. He focused on the track ahead, blocking out the cheers and jeers of the crowd. His muscles worked in perfect harmony, each stride bringing him closer to the finish line. As he rounded the final bend, he saw the leaders just ahead. With a final burst of speed, he sprinted towards them, his lungs burning and his legs screaming in protest. But he didn’t let up, his determination propelling him forward. To his surprise, he crossed the finish line in second place, just inches behind the winner. Paragraph 2: The “man” in black appeared and congratulated him, too. “Well done, John,” he said, his tone no longer sneering but genuinely impressed. “You’ve come a long way. Remember, it’s not about winning every time, it’s about pushing yourself to be better, about facing your fears and rising above them.” John stared at the “man”, realizing he was a figment of his own doubts and insecurities. “Thanks,” he muttered, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He turned to his coach and teammates, who were cheering him on. For the first time, he felt like he truly belonged. He knew he still had a lot to learn and many more races to run, but today, he had proven to himself that hecould compete with the best. And that, he thought, was victory enough. (Text 1) M: What do you do in your spare time? W: Well, I like shopping and I jog every day. But there is nothing I enjoy more than drawing pictures. (Text 2) W: Do you go to work on foot every day? M: No, my physical condition doesn’t allow me to walk a lot. I usually take a bus. But sometimes, I wish someone would give me a ride. (Text 3) W: Haven’t you moved out? I thought you moved last month. M: Cathy and I intended to move, but she wasn’t satisfied with any of the flats she looked at. But she just found a new flat online the other day and we want to move this weekend. (Text 4) M: Is your roof all right after the storm? I saw a workman there today. W: The roof is fine. The workman was putting some new glass in an upstairs window. It was broken by a tree branch. Luckily it didn’t damage my car. (Text 5) W: Don’t take too long, Mike. The examination is coming, you know. M: I won’t. I’ll come back to school as soon as possible and make up the lessons missed during my absence. (Text 6) W: Hey, Mark! How have you been? It’s been so long. M: Yeah, Judy, I can’t believe it’s been like a year since we had that fishing trip by the river. W: At least! I’ve been trying to get everyone together, but you know, it’s just hard to organize so many people after graduation. M: Yes, work comes first. Well, Elaine and I are thinking of heading up to the beach next month. We’d love it if you can come with us. W: Actually, I’m moving house next month. (Text 7) M: I’m planning my trip to New Zealand. I heard you went there last year. W: Oh, yes. What would you like to know? M: Which month is the best time to go? W: I went in December but it was very hot. Any time after August would be OK. I suggest you go in October. M: What is the best place you visited? W: I like Milford Sound most, but my friend all love Mount Cook. Lake Tekapo is really beautiful, too. M: Where did you stay? W: At a local family. We saved a lot of money staying there. Hotels were too expensive. Next time I go, I’ll camp. It must be interesting. M: Sounds great. Thanks, Jane. W: You’ re welcome! (Text 8) M: Hi, I’d like some information about the photography course. W: Well, we do several different courses. The first is the “Introducing Photography”. That runs for ten weeks and it’s a primary-level course. That’s on Monday evenings. M: Right. W: Next, there’s the “Black and White Photography”, which is at middle level, so you’d need some previousexperience for that one. And you have to have an interview with a tutor beforehand. It’s a daytime course on Tuesdays. That’s also for ten weeks. M: Pity! I work during daytime on Tuesdays. W: Well, there’s also the “Scenery Photography”, which is on Tuesday evenings. That’s a longer course than the others. It runs for sixteen weeks. M: And do you need previous experience for that one? W: It’s at advanced level. So, yes. And again, you’d have to be interviewed beforehand. Then the only other one we do is the “Art of Digital Photography”. It’s for ten weeks. You can do it at any time to suit you during the week. No interview. (Text 9) W: So, what kind of film are we going to see? M: What about the action film Bullet Train? It’s said to be extremely exciting. W: Exciting? Action films are always full of fighting and killings. They’ re not my cup of tea. M: Brad Pitt stars in the film and there’re many humorous scenes. I thought you’d like it. W: I’m a fan of comedies, but that’s not the same. M: OK. There’s also an adventure film called The Railway Children and a science fiction one called The Adam Project, so which one would you like to see? W: I’d like to choose The Railway Children. What do you say? M: Each suits me fine. Well, two tickets cost $10. If we buy online, we’ll get a 20% discount today. W: Well, do it online. M: OK. But it’ll start in two hours. What about getting something to eat first? There’s an Italian restaurant at the corner next to the shopping mall. My sister had dinner there last time and she spoke highly of it. W: Cool. Let’s go. (Text 10) W: I hope I have given you a clear idea of the schedule for the island tour. Now here’s some important information about surfing. Firstly, travelers’ pick-up is offered. We can pick you up at any spot close to our surfing location. If it’ s a little far, then we ‘ll ask for a small pick-up and drop fee, $25 for the group of five. Hotel pick-up is also offered. Please view the hotel list on your checking page to see if yours is included among the pick-up points. And secondly, if you want to take surfing lessons in advance, please sign up now. Thirdly, the fees include surfboards, but not bottled water. The surfing experience lasts two hours, and then we’ll return to the original departure point. Oh, don’t forget to bring your own towels.
