Unit 2 Out of this world 1.Poverty,disease,violence,hurricanes,wildfire and more are constantly(adv.不断地) troubling humanity,and even our best efforts thus far can’t address(熟词生义:v.设法解决) all of everybody’s needs. E.g.We must address the problem of traffic pollution.我们必须设法解决交通污染问题。 2.Many are looking for places to cut funding,and one of the first places that comes up(被提及; 被讨论) in conversation is excessive(adj.过度的) spending on space exploration. 3.It’s short-sighted(adj.目光短浅的),in that(因为) it fails to recognize(熟词生义v.意识到 n.认可recognition) that our greatest problems require long-term investment,and that society’s greatest advances come about(发生,happen) through hard work,research,development of decades after that is made. recognize...to be/as...认为……是…… It is recognized that...人们认为…… beyond recognition认不出来 4.Over these years,much of the results of the space research have been adapted to be applicable to(对……适用) our daily lives. 5.Space exploration can also serve as(充当) a motivation for children to enter the fields of science and engineering. 6.To many people,the idea of space travel may still seem far from practical(不切实际的). 7.EpiPens might cease(v.停止) to function normally in space. 8.With the cubes too small to hold an entire EpiPen the students had consulted with(与某人商 议) Paul Mayer,a chemist at University of Ottawa and eventually figured out(想出) a way to get the EpiPen solution into a specially-made bottle. 9.Mayer was skeptical(adj.怀疑的) at first that the samples would show any signs of decomposition,but he was blown away(感到惊叹) by the “dramatic” results. 10.Excited to have made such a groundbreaking(adj.开创性的) discovery,the students plan to do the experiment again to check their results. 11.to integrate innovation into(使……融入……) clinical study 12.to confirm they can stand(熟词生义 v.经得起) space environments E.g.Modern plastics can stand very high and very low temperatures. 13.Anger is the most destructive(adj.有破坏性的) emotion.(v.destroy n.destruction) 14.The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with(面对) a situation that usually angers.
