Three years ago, my parents and I lived in a small apartment in a busy city. They worked all day, so we didn’t
spend much time together. This made my mum sad, so one day she advised us to move to the countryside.
My dad and I agreed. Soon she found a big farmhouse near a forest, but it was shabby and old. It didn’t
have a roof (屋顶) and it even didn’t have any bathrooms! I thought she couldn’t be serious, but she was.
After a lot of hard work, my parents turned it into a homestay (民宿) and we moved there. Our homestay hasfive comfortable bedrooms for visitors. It is open from March to November. The rooms aren’t always full on weekdays.
But on weekends, there are lots of visitors from the city. People love to come and relax here.
When we first moved here, I missed my friends and my school. But now I go to the village school and I have
lots of new friends. Sometimes I go to the city and visit my old friends, but I don’t like being in the city anymore.
People sometimes ask me if I get bored with the life in the countryside. I will invite them to come and stay in our
homestay for a few days and let them find the answer themselves!

In our lives, we should often be ready for change that will help us unlock (释放) our self-improvement power.
However, we don’t always understand it. We think of unlocking our self-improvement power only when everything
gets worse.
When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do
we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off.
Most of us will learn about unlocking our self-improvement power only when the whole world falls apart. We
think and feel this way because it is not easy to change. However, change becomes more painful when we pay no
attention to it.
Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self-
improvement power, not because the world says so, but because we realize it’s good for ourselves.
Happy people don’t just accept change; they welcome it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means
unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who
fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she is afraid of being around groups of people. Over the years, that is what
Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd comes, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not onlybelieves in her story, but lives it!
If we look at things in a different way, we might have greater fun. Doing exercise three times a week would
lead to a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the
whole process (过程) of unlocking our self-improvement power, will we realize that we can take things light and
become happy.
56.What’s the writing purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To tell a story. B.To solve a problem.
C.To give an example. D.To ask a question.
57.What advice might be given to help solve Jane’s problem?
A.Always believe in herself. B.Get on with people in a friendly way.
C.Unlock herself out of the box of thought.D.Count the days until she is fully improved.
58.We should put the following sentence at the end of ________.
We see the warning signs when things get difficult.
A.Paragraph 2 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 4 D.Paragraph 5
59.Which of the statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.It’s not easy for people to make a change.
B.People will unlock their self-improvement power when they realize it is helpful.
C.Unlocking self-improvement powers means changing the usual way to think of oneself.
D.People can’t have fun when they see things differently.
60.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is It Important to Take Things Light?
B.Is It Necessary to Believe in Yourselves?
C.To Hold on to The Last Moment or to Give Up?
D.To Unlock Ourselves out of the Box of Thought or to Stay in It?

In July 2020, Ministry of Education (教育部) of China required that students in primary and middle schools
should spend some time each week (at least 2 hours for students of Grade 1 and 2 while at least 3 hours for
students of others grades) doing chores and other activities. Since then, schools have paid more attention to labor
(劳动) education.
students chore time each week
in the countryside in the city
boys 1.11 hours 0.8 hour
girls 1.2 hours 0.92 hour
Most parents think it necessary for kids to do some chores. But some parents still think childhood is just for
playing so they don’t ask their children to do chores. Most students can’t meet the requirement of chore time
although they help to do some chores each week. In fact, doing chores does good to teenagers in many ways.
Learning a lot of skillsWhen they do the housework, they need to understand how to
cook, how to shop and how to clean. Learning these skills can help them understand the needs
of themselves and others.
Feeling proud of their achievements
Helping around the house can really help to make children proud of themselves, and
giving them praise for helping will make them want to do more. They will feel happy to be ableto help out in the house.
Having a sense of responsibility (责任感)
Children learn to help share and care about others by doing chores. They can under-stand
the value of hard work when they are asked to do a specific job in the house.
66.How many hours should middle school students do chores each week?
67.Why don’t some parents want their children to do chores?
68.What information can we get from the table?
69.How will students feel by doing chores?
