Years ago, I was traveling around Australia with two friends. At that time, both friends had to leave early
because of work, so I decided to travel to the Whitsunday Islands alone.
I got on a boat. Everyone on the boat, except me, was with friends. Not wanting to talk to strangers, I decided to
take photos. The back of the boat was a good place to catch the wonderful view of the sea.
I walked there and saw a metal box standing there. I put my arms on it, without knowing it was a hot
barbecue (烧烤架)!
“My God, it hurts!” crying in pain, I moved my arms away at once.
Although there weren’t marks on my arms, I was in great pain. And I didn’t even have friends with me. I sat
alone, trying not to cry. Finally my arms turned purple.
People on the boat saw this and came to help me. One girl offered me a special scald cream (烫伤膏) . After
using it, I felt much better. I could enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays, talk to strangers on the boat and have fun

Are you the kind of person who hates school? Or are you more like Michael Nicholson, who can’t stop learning?
He has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a doctor’s! If you’re also crazy about studying, you might be a
philomath—a person who loves to learn and study. The word comes from Greek with “phil” meaning “a lover of ”
and “math” meaning “learning”. Humans are all philomaths in a way—our brain is born with curiosity. We want
to learn and understand, partly to make sense of the world but also because of something called neoteny. This is a
term that refers to the juvenile (年幼的) characteristics of some animals, including humans, being kept into
adulthood. One of these characteristics is neuroplasticity (神经可塑性), which helps our brains stay flexible—this
gives us the ability to learn throughout our lives. Many animals which are genetically close to us, like primates (灵
长类), can’t do this and only learn during their youth.
★ Lots of people remember their school days as being boring or even meaningless. Why is it? Scientists
have suggested that if an idea is too difficult or dull, it becomes harder to connect old and new ideas together. If
that’s the case, we lose interest and take in less information. This experience of education at school may lead to
people avoiding learning opportunities in later life.
So, don’t let a bad educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult. We are lifelong
learners by nature, so take advantage of your biology and discover your inner philomath. Who knows what you
could achieve?

Many of us like to watch and post short videos. But can we share whatever we like, even with the wrong
information?
A blogger said sorry for one video she posted on Feb. 16. In the video, she said that she had found a student’s
holiday workbook and said the student’s name was Qin Lang. Many Internet users checked the student’s name, grade
and school. They found out the video might not be real. In a new video, the blogger claimed (声称) that she had given
the wrong information to protect the student’s privacy (隐私). Some people might not think it’s a big deal if you make
a video with the wrong information. They believe that saying sorry will fix everything. But it’s not that simple.
According to the Law of the PRC on Penalties for Administration of Public Security (《中华人民共和国治安管
理处罚法》), if the videos don’t care about the truth and disturb (扰乱) public order, their makers will get
punished.
It’s important to be creative when people make short videos. However, it is not OK to make up stories and
break the law.
As early as 2000, the State Council issued the Administrative Measures on Internet Information Services
(《互联网信息服务管理办法》). It bans (禁止) spreading rumors and disturbing the social order. If you break the
law, you could get into trouble. For example, you might get your social media account stopped, have to pay fines, get
detained (拘留) or even go to jail (监狱).
