Do you know any 9-year-old kids who have started their own museums? When Theodore Roosevelt was only
nine, he and two of his cousins opened the “Roosevelt Museum of Natural History”. The museum was in Roosevelt’s
bedroom. It had a total of 12 samples. On show were a few seashells, some dead butterflies, some birds’ nests and so
on. Young Roosevelt was proud of his small museum.
Born in New York in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was not always healthy. “I was a sickly boy,” he once wrote.

nature then read and wrote about it.
Roosevclt’s interest in nature sometimes got him into trouble. Once, his mother found several dead mice in the

Because Roosevelt was often sickly as a boy, his body was small and weak. When he was about 12, his father
asked him to improve his body. Roosevelt began to do exercise. He didn’t become strong quickly. But he did decide
to face life’s challenges with a strong spirit. That decision stayed with Roosevelt during his whole life. Finally, he
was an active, healthy person. He enjoyed adventures, and he loved the outdoors.
In 1900, at the age of 41, Roosevelt became the Vice President (副总统). A year later, President McKinley, was
shot and killed. Roosevelt became the 26th President at 42 years old. He was the youngest leader in the country.

The Cooper family from the US are in Costa Rica for two weeks. Mike and Jane Cooper, their daughter Ann and
their son Toby.
The Coopers are working for a group called Pretoma. “We’re volunteers—we don’t get any money for doing
this,” says Jane. “But it’s good to help the animals here.”
Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches here. They come out of the ocean at night, make a hole in the sand

The Pretoma volunteers at Punta Banco are trying to protect sea turtles and their eggs. “We walk along the beach

up the eggs, take them to the hatchery and bury them. The hatchery provides a safe and warm environment for the
eggs. In about two months.
But it’s not all about work for the Coopers. In the daytime they can swim or just get some sleep. Toby plays

Have you ever heard of the Silk Road? Do you know what an important role it plays in the whole world? Did
you visit any famous places along the road? Although it’s called the Silk Road, people bought and sold much more
than silk. The Silk Road went through Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It was 6,500 km from Xi’an
to Rome.
My dad is very interested in the Silk Road and he has told me many things about it. Last summer, my family got

Gao Wengi, 49, the owner of a restaurant in Xi’an, Shaanxi, started to offer a new service, suspended meals
