Heroes and Symbols

People in every country have their own heroes in their hearts and they
regard them as their national soul.
There are too many in our country. Confucius (Be born in the year 551
B.C.—Pass away in the year 601 B.C.) who was a pioneer in the field
of education was a great thinker and philosopher whose wise ideas
about kindness and good manners have influenced many people in
different eastern countries.
Qin Shihuang united China and he set up his own empire. His empire
could not last forever and finally it came to an end, but it has its
special historic meaning.
Zheng He who was a captain and imperial palace official defeated all
kinds of difficulties and succeeded in leading the sailing to the harbor
in the east coast of Africa to develop the trade and friendship between
China and other countries without compass.
Qian Xursen, the father of China’s missiles, traveled across the PacificOcean to the United States for further study after his graduation
from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1934. There he received his
Ph.D. degrees in both aerospace and mathematics. After he
graduated, he became a teacher as well as a researcher who studied
rockets and missile theories. When he returned to our motherland in
1955, our space research was almost a blank. In 1956, he set up the first
research institute of rockets and missiles. From then on, he was in
charge of developing China’s missiles, rocket and spacecraft research
programs. He was a pioneer in these related fields and made greatest
achievement or contribution. And he is also a man who always
encourages Chinese youth. His devotion to his country was expressed
in his saying, “My career is in China, my success is in China and my
destination is in China!” He is really our national back forever!
So is Yuan Longping who has developed hybrid rice.
The ancient Chinese working people are all our national heroes. They
invented compass to help the sailors have some new discoveries. They
invented gunpowder to make fireworks burn easily and it was brought
to the world by the Arab. They made paper with barks, ropes and rags
in Western Han dynasty. They also used clay and ink to print
characters. We call it printing. What they did has changed the worldgreatly. They are the real heroes of our nation.
Of course, there are also many heroes in other countries. Marie Curie who
discovered radium and won the Nobel Prize twice in her lifetime
was a hero. Tomas Edison who invented many things including the
telegraph and photographic film is a hero. Abraham Lincoln, a
highly respected lawyer and a well known politician, was a hero.
Though his father remarried and he had a stepmother, he was still
elected the sixteenth president of the United States when the Civil
War broke up. He was a great leader in the war. Unfortunately, this
excellent president whom the slaves trusted and the slave owners
who wanted to break up the Union and get rid of was shot because
all slaves were set free. “I am a slow walker, but I never walk
backwards.” “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but
whether you are content with your failure.” How wonderful his words
are!
Just as People in every country have their own heroes, every country has
its own building which is taken as the country’s symbol and pride.
The Great Wall is a treasure of Chinese civilization and it is regarded
as a symbol of the Chinese nation. The entire wall is a specialconstruction with many branches which was made of bricks. The
ancient Chinese people built it to expect to separate them from their
enemies from other States. The Great Wall will remain in China and in
Chinese people’s hearts as a soul forever.
The Egyptian pyramids which the kings built them as their tombs
were one of the New Seven Wonders of the world. According to
scientific research, it took 100 000 people 20 years to complete the
Great Pyramid stone by stone which weighs as much as 15 tons and
each stone fixed so well. To this day, the great completion is a symbol
of the wisdom and how the ancient Egyptians did it without our modern
tools is still a mystery.
There are many other famous buildings, such as, the Tower of Pisa which
is famous for its leaning in Italy. Do you know Windsor Castle which
was built as the private home of the queen in the UK, the Big Ben in
London which can ring out, the Opera House in Sydney, Australia?
All these buildings are the symbols of the countries.
Actually each city also has its own symbol. For instance, the West Lake,
which lies in Zhejiang province, is the symbol of Hangzhou because of
the romantic tale about XuXian and the white Snake and the beautifulscenery attracts a great number of tourists from home and abroad
every year.
The Chu River is the symbol of Yingyang City because of the battle
between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu. The battlefield was along the Chu
River. People invented Chinese chess in memory of the famous
peasant battle.That the grand Huabiao stands in front of the
Tian'anmen gate is the symbols of Beijing. The shape of them is a white
marble column. The ancient emperors carved dragons on them to
guard the whole nation because they thought they were real dragons and
the sons of Heaven. Later, people carved their comments on it.
Gradually, during the Han dynasty, Huabiao was a symbol of the
government’s responsibility to the people.
Who is your hero? What’s the major symbol of your country or your
city? Someone says that everyone is other’s hero in his own field.
Suppose you are a tourist guide and you are the hero of your group
members, because you know many of the tourist attractions and can
introduce them in detail. Such as the length of the Great wall, the
height of the Huangguoshu Waterfall, the shapes of strange pine
trees on Mount Huang and so on.Suppose you are a successful business man, your topic may be about the
price of cocoa, porcelain, world-famous exports, the International
Exhibition or the unique tea from the areas with mild climate. You
are the hero of many common people.
Suppose you are a teacher of a driving school, you are the hero of your
students. And they will fetch you everything you need to make you fun
because they want to get their driving licenses earlier.
Suppose you are a housewife, you may often say “Firewood, rice, oil,
salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are necessary to begin a day.” The birth
of your child makes you happy and you are the hero of your children,
because you can tell them the story about the wolf and the boy who
grazes sheep to make fun of them.
Neither you nor I can give an exact and brief description about
hero. In fact no one can. In my opinion, everyone can be the hero of his
or her own heart. No matter where you are from, no matter what you are,
it is our duty to keep the glory of our country in heart. I believe the
pioneering spirit of the heroes and their iron will will encourage you tostudy hard and make a great contribution to your country in your own
field. Then you will be the hero of your own.
