“Is there anything you want from Grandma’s apartment?” My uncle, texted me, last week.
His mum had passed away the week before, aged 96. He’d begun the painful yet necessary task of dividing her
things: keep, sell, donate.
I answered without thinking. “Yes, I would like her aloe (芦荟) in the orange pot, please.”Sometime around 1975, Grandma received this plant from a local cook as a gift. It could, I suppose, just be
anything like a calendar, or a pen, or a box of biscuits. But it just happened to be a plant, which Grandma, who always
had green fingers, appreciated and placed in her doorway.
Five years later, my mum married the cook’s son. And had me.
When my father’s mother died in 1993, Grandma told me how this plant was different from the other ones she
had in her home. It helped to keep a good relationship between the two sides of the family.
In recent years, whenever we visited Grandma’s apartment, I would show it to my children. “Look at this, it was
a gift your great-grandma bought for your other great-grandma! Before they became relatives!”
Many times, Grandma gave me cuttings of this plant, in the hope that I might grow another. Yet, every time, I
failed to take care of my offshoots (分支). Aloe is hardy (适应力强). However, if you over-water or under-water it,
it dies. It doesn’t mix well with dogs or under-heated flooring. In short, with my skills, I’m better off with a plastic
one from a supermarket.
But that didn’t use to matter, because I could ask Grandma for another cutting and try again Now I can’t. So
straight after I asked my uncle for this plant, I came up with the idea: the plant will go and live with Ann, my wife’s
mother, who can grow plants well and keep hold of Grandma’s aloe---at least until I can be trusted to look after its
offshoots. Then maybe one day I can confidently place the mother plant in my own home. At the same time, Ann
will spread cuttings among her family members, as Grandma used to do.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI 人工智能) technology has developed rapidly and is being used in
people’s life and work. From self-driving cars to smart homes to data analysis, AI is gradually changing the way we
work and live. In this situation, many traditional human work can be replaced by intelligent tools. On the one hand,
people are happy to have so many useful AI tools to make our work and life easier. On the other hand, people are
worried that their jobs will be replaced by AI tools, and can’t find jobs to live on.
Some young people believe that with the popularization of AI translation tools, the need to learn foreign
languages is greatly reduced. After all, an APP on a smartphone can translate different languages quickly, helping
people who speak different languages communicate. In addition, AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and many other
such tools or websites can help people realize all kinds of ideas, such as writing, drawing, making videos, searching
for materials, and analyzing data. Most AI tools can help with writing in any language. Some teenagers think theability to write in a foreign language or a native language is not important, as long as they can use AI tools. They no
longer need to spend a lot of time learning these “fungible” skills.
However, other young people have different ideas. They believe that improving information literacy (信息素

skills but also thinking and moral judgment (道德判断). Students should be prepared to live with AI, learn knowledge,
use AI, and even develop new AI tools.

40. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. In the time of Al, students don’t need to learn any foreign language.
B. It's not important for people to improve their writing.
C. People should learn more and master skills that cannot be replaced by AI tools.

Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. 41 But there’s one person in China
who is called the “teacher of teachers”.
He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. Last year marked the 130 anniversary of his birth. People in different parts
of China commemorated (纪念) Tao by visiting his memorial halls or holding meetings to reflect on his thoughts on
education.
Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in 1914. 42 . But
when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey’s
education method or theories. For Tao, education is an active process in real-life experiences rather than one of telling
and being told. He proposed (提出) “unity (融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting”.
43
After conducting surveys in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of
urban illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. 44 To deal with the lack of teachers and money,
in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal collage (晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs of Nanjing to train teachers
and educators, most of whom became teachers at rural schools.
45 He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offered free education to refugee
(避难) children after the Japanese invasion of China began in 1937.
Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life, “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even
a leaf of grass.”
A. There he studied educational philosophy under the guidance of John Dewey, an American philosopher andeducational reformer (改革家).
B. Even during the anti-Japanese war, Tao never forgot his ambition.
C. To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working.
D. They are tasked with the mission to spread knowledge ideas and truth.
E. On the voyage (航行) of life, he kindled the light of hope for everyone.

Recently, news about the conflicts between parents and children frequently appears in the media. Why is the
relationship between parents and children becoming so serious? It’s my pleasure to share my opinions with you.
For one thing, they are lack of communication, so it’s of great importance for parents to create more chances to
talk with their children so that they can understand each other better. For another, because parents are always strict
with their children and expect too much from them, it will cause misunderstanding between them. Therefore, it’s
necessary for parents to build up friendly and close relationships with their kids before expressing their expectations.
Besides, parents’ bad habits will influence their children badly. Thus, setting good examples for children is helpful
to gradually develop their good habits. Last but not least, many parents are so busy at work that they don’t have time
to spend with their children. So it’s vital for parents to spare more time for their children to build up close relationships.
In short, to solve the problems, love, and communication are of great significance.
