A couple of university students created the Plufl. It is the world’s first dog bed for humans.
If you are thinking that the Plufl is just an oversized dog bed, you are right. However, according to its creators,
the University of British Columbia students Noah Silverman and Yuki Kinoshita, it is much more than that. The Plufl
can provide the most comfortable sleeping experience and a feeling of safety. It is helpful to people who have sleeping
problems. The price of the Plufl is $400. Although it is not the cheapest dog bed in the world, the Plufl seems to have
a lot of fans.
Noah Silverman and Yuki Kinoshita thought of the idea of a dog bed for humans while they were hanging out
at a coffee shop. They made friends with both a lady and her pet dog called Coco. They saw Coco sleeping in its
custom-made bed. This made Noah ask himself, “Why can’t people have this?” So he put his idea into practice with
Yuki.
Unlike an actual dog bed, the Plufl is much more comfortable. The foam cushion (泡沫垫) allows users to rest
their heads on it when they want. Also, each bed has a bag so that it can be easily kept.
The shape of the bed is as cute as the fetal position (胎儿睡姿). It is the most common and comfortable sleep
form according to research. And the thick pillow allows users to curl (卷) up their hands and feet, so they have a
feeling of safety. Noah thinks it will be popular with people.

Do you know the numbers 0-9 well? They are numbers in Arabic numerals. People use them to mark numbers
now. But it’s not the only number system that people use.
About 2,500 years ago, people in Rome used their bands to count. In Roman numerals, one finger means 1, two
fingers means 2, three fingers means 3, four fingers means 4. If you want to say five, you can keep your four fingers
close on one side and your thumb on the other side. Make each of your hands be five, then you’ll have then. So in
Rome, the numbers are “I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII,IX, X”. Also, “L” means fifty, “C” means one hundred, “D”
means five hundred and “M” means one thousand. But there is no zero in Rome numerals. Today, few people use
them because they are difficult to write and count. But we can still see them on some watches and clocks.
Today, most people use the Arabic numerals. They are easy to remember and write. They help people to count
things every day. In fact, Indians first created and used the Arabic numerals. In the late 8th century, people in Arabic
countries learned about them. Then the Arabic people took them into Europe. So people in Europe called them Arabic
numerals. Today, people around the world use Arabic numerals and they help a lot.

A survey on weekly smartphone use
Recently, we did a survey on weekly smartphone use of 1400 eighth graders in Guangzhou Middle School.
Here is the result.
According to the survey, 55% of the students use smartphones to search for information and study English.
On the other hand, 45% of the students use smartphones to play games and watch short videos. Using smartphones
has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, smartphones can be very helpful for learning. They
provide easy access to a vast amount of information and educational resources. However, there are also some
drawbacks. Excessive use of smartphones can waste a lot of time and money. Moreover, it can lead to addiction
and distract students from their studies.
In my opinion, students should use smartphones wisely. They should set a time limit for non-educational
activities and focus more on using smartphones as a tool for learning.
