Today, natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, landslides, typhoons,
hurricanes, tornadoes and tsunamis, often strike towns and villages, causing
human deaths or great damage to people’s property. The most dangerous of them is
the volcanic eruption. An active volcano can erupt at any time. Its great power
can ruin crops, destroy houses and even bury villages. When a tsunami comes,
the waves can crash buildings and sweep away crops. Experts say people should
remain calm in the face of an emergency. Experts also give a summary of the effect of
some natural disasters. Although they affect people's lives, the effect is not as serious
as people imagine.

A great earthquake struck the city and everyone was shocked. Ninety percent of
the buildings lay in ruins, metal pipes and taps cracked, and bricks covered the
ground. There were ruins everywhere. Many people were trapped at home
and suffered a great deal. There was neither electricity nor water. It seemed as if the
world were at an end. The government immediately organised rescue teams
to evacuate people and take the trapped survivors to shelters in the open air. Some
doctors ran over with first aid kits on hand. The helicopters delivered all kinds
of supplies and the ambulances whistled by. The PLA also came to their rescue.
Thanks to their unified efforts and wisdom, the city began to breathe and revive.

A holiday in Penang is an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in
Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we would drive
up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite food haunts (常去的地方).
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. It took us six
hours to reach our destination. We always stayed at one of the hotels in Batu
Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had
a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After
dinner, we returned to our rooms to play games. My parents had a rule for our
holidays which was that we were to spend time doing things together. There was to
be no TV and no Internet.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera and then spent the rest of the
afternoon in town visiting our favorite hawker stalls (小贩摊位). As we were having
tea at a coffee shop, we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatera,
an island in Indonesia. We headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We
took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Looking up, I saw
the sun shining brighter than I ever knew before. I saw a tree trembling in the distance
as it reflected the sun’s rays. It never occurred to us that something awful would take
place. Suddenly, I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be leaving from the
shore. I called my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look
and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It
seemed to grow taller by the second.

My father shouted at us to run back to the hotel. My heart was overwhelmed
with an indescribably panic at the very emergent moment. We made every endeavor
to charge towards the hotel. Although it was just a short walk between the beach
and the hotel entrance, it seemed like miles away. Hardly had we approached the
hotel when the massive wave caught up with us. In a state of shock, we rushed back
to our rooms upstairs and slammed the door. My dad warned us not to go downstairs
in a trembling voice. At the sight of the rising water and the collapsing trees, I was

centuries, everything calmed down.
We waited a long time before going downstairs.Going down the damaged stairs
carefully and cautiously, we were in tremendous astonishment when seeing that all
the things in the hotel were in such a mess. It was so fortunate that my family were
safe and sound throughout the disaster. However, some visitors in the hotel had got
badly injured and were in urgent need of timely help. Therefore, we were
determined to stay there to serve as volunteers instead of going home in spite of our
desire to keep away from the earthquake-stricken area (地震灾区). With joint
efforts, Penang eventually came to life again. Every time my family went to Penang
again, we would recall this unforgettable holiday.

we were seized by a sense of horror, rushing as fast as I could to the hotel.
Fortunately, we reached our room before the angry sea swallowed us. Then we
realized that the abnormal tsunami was the following catastrophe after the earthquake
near Sumatera. Seeing the moving waves and hearing the bitter winds, we hoped
that the disaster wouldn't destroy the hotel near the show. So scared was I that I was
on the edge of tears. Helpless, we had no alternative but to stay upstairs, hoping that
the sea would calm down soon and feeling how small we were in the face of the
nature.
We waited a long time before going downstairs. The gray line had gone and the
sky cleared up. Hardly had we gone downstairs when we saw the dreadful 糟糕透
顶的 mess caused by the sea.The trees were pulled up and all the hawker stores
collapsed. At that moment, my parents decided to join volunteer group to cope with
the mess. On the third day of our holiday, we spared no efforts to collect the trash
and rebuild the town with the aim to revive the beautiful beach. And we were
rewarded with delicious picnic food from the locals. Never will I forget this special
and meaningful holiday in Penang.
