Text 1
W: Steve, how can you watch football? It is so boring. Plus, the matches last forever. For me, I
like basketball better.
M: Come on, football is the most popular sport in Scotland. Anyway, I prefer to play tennis for
fitness.
Text 2
W: Are you free for lunch on Saturday? We’re trying to get our friends together.
M: No. I work on Saturdays … But please don’t change your plans for me. It’s impossible to
pick a time that works for everyone!
W: OK. Well, we’ll miss you.
Text 3
M: You were an excellent runner, winning medals in the 200 meters. What made you switch to
the high jump?
W: I really wanted to step out of the comfort zone, and I’d also like to try the 1000 meters.

M: Miss Jayne, for your teeth whitening, it will cost you $150. Are you happy with that?
W: I’m at work in the company now. Let me check with my family first.
M: All right. Then I will call you later.
W: No problem.
Text 5
M: What time does the museum open?
W: During the week it opens at half past nine in the morning. It opens half an hour later on
Saturdays and closes on Sundays.

M: Good evening, ma’am.
W: Hi! I’m looking for a gift for my daddy’s birthday.
M: Well, you’ve come to the right place. We have the latest men’s fashions. How about this sweater?
It’s a good deal.

picture of him …
M: Oh, yes. I see that he wears athletic clothing. Perhaps you would like to buy him a pair of
sports shoes?
W: Maybe you are right. But you don’t have many shoes here. I should probably go to a shoe
store …

M: I’ve been trying out AI to help write words for my songs. It’s been surprisingly helpful.
W: Really? How does it help?
M: I give it a theme, like heartbreak or adventure, and it generates lines for me to use.
W: That’s fascinating. Do the tunes always match your style?
M: Not always. Sometimes they don’t quite work, but I adjust them to fit my voice.
W: Has it helped you finish a song yet?
M: Not completely, but it gave me some ideas for a pop song. I’m going to complete it after
work.
W: That’s amazing! Will you keep using it?
M: Yes, but only as a tool! Anyway, I do want my songs to stay personal. Oh, it’s getting
late. We’d better move back to work.
W: Okay, catch you later!

M: Jane, do you think you could stop playing the violin? I’m trying to revise for my English
exam tomorrow and I can’t remember a single word.
W: But I have a music exam tomorrow. That’s why I’m playing it.
M: I just can’t think with all that noise going on.
W: It’s not noise. It’s music, and my exam is just as important as yours.
M: OK, here’s an idea. You play the violin for the next hour. Then the following hour I get to
study in peace. How does that sound?
W: OK, that’s fine. What are you going to do while I’m playing?
M: I’m feeling quite hungry, so I’m now going to the kitchen to make myself some lunch.
W: Oh, I’m hungry as well. Will you make my lunch? I can eat it when I finish playing.
M: OK. I’m just going to have a sandwich. Is that OK for you?
W: Yes, thanks.

W: Congratulations on getting your own apartment, James!
M: Thanks! Now, I just need to get some furniture so I can have people over for dinner.
W: What do you need? My parents have some extra furniture that I might be able to give you …
M: Well, I have a sofa and a bed. That’s it. If I invited more than two people over, there
wouldn’t be enough places for them to sit down.
W: My parents have some chairs you might want. And I remember they have two tables.
They have one for the dining room. I assume you can have the other one and put your TV
on it.
M: Wow, thanks. I’d appreciate that.
W: No problem. What else do you need?
M: Well, I need a shelf for my books. You know, I’ve got tons of books.
W: Yeah. But I don’t think my parents have any extra bookshelves. Maybe we could go to
some yard sales this Saturday. We might be able to get a nice one.
M: Sounds great! Do you want to meet here or at your place?
W: Let’s meet here. We should find a yard sale nearby. That way, if we buy something, we
don’t have to carry it very far.
M: Good point.
W: Maybe I’ll invite my brother to come, just in case. He’s strong and can help us carry
things … You know what? It’s going to look great in here once you get a few nice things.
M: Yeah. Thanks.
