Stressed. Anxious. Tired. This is how many employees feel at work because of stressors like longer work
hours and the need to do more with fewer resources. Such work stress has been shown to bring about anxiety and
anger, and damage personal performance. Typically, there are two ways people try to deal with this stress. One is to
simply power through — to focus on getting the stressful work done. The other common strategy is to back down —
to temporarily (暂时地) disconnect from work and get away from the stressful environment.
Unfortunately, both “pushing through” and “getting away” have potential (潜在的) risk. Researches have long
believed that we humans have limits in dealing with heavy workloads, which restrict our ability to always go all out.
Continuing to make great efforts while stressed will simply tax us and lead to tiredness and damaged performance.
While putting off the work can provide temporary relief, it does not address the real problems that cause stress in the
first place. When we return from a break, we are not only faced with the same problems, but we may also experience
additional guilt and anxiety.
So what else can employees do to weaken the ill effects of stress? Researchers suggest a third option: focusing
on learning. It means gathering new information, picking up a new skill, or seeking out mental challenges.
Researchers found learning equips us with new abilities to address or even prevent future stressors. Additionally,
taking time to reflect on what we know and learn new things helps us develop a sense of achievement. Plus, learning
also helps connect us to a purpose of growth and development.
What specifically can you do to increase learning when faced with stress at work? First, start from the inner
heart. Practice viewing stressful work as challenges in your mind. It shifts your mindset and better prepares you to
approach the task. Second, work and learn with others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and co-
workers might have a deeper understanding. Third, shape learning activities as a new form of “work break” from
your routine tasks at work.

Math is everywhere in our life, from working out the bill after dinner to your personal costs. While some
people enjoy solving math problems, many others are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers
and feel really anxious. It might seem discouraging, but this “math anxiety” is quite common, and you’re far from
being the only one who feels this way. Besides, our worries and fears don’t always show how able we are.
The reason for this problem often begins to appear in our childhood at school. Studies have shown that math
teachers who feel nervous about teaching the subject can pass their anxiety to their students, and girls might be more
affected by this anxiety. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, around 31% of 15 and 16-
year-olds in 34 countries said that they felt very nervous when solving math problems, 33% said they got nervous
doing math homework, and nearly60% worried that math classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston
University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC that providing students, especially girls, with good role
models “is important, especially at a young age.” She believes the key is to have people, especially women who love
teaching math, educate younger kids.
David Robson, writing for BBC Future, mentioned, “It’s unclear why math causes so much fear compared to
other subjects like geography. But knowing there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more anxious about not
doing well.”
And if we believe that we’re not “math people”, we may question about ourselves and avoid solving problems
that we could deal with.
Researchers have been trying to work out why mental math can make us nervous. This fear might come from
all kinds of sources, but some suggest that openly expressing your fears can weaken their control on you and
encourage children to see math tests as challenges rather than threat (威胁). We need to have a positive view on math
and give it another try.

At St. Francis High School, there’s something to be said about math teacher Jim Connor.
Truth is, Connor can be a bit boring. But the 70-year-old Vietnam vet says he’s not here to entertain his
students. “It drives me crazy when people say school should be fun,” he says. “I mean, it’s nice if it could be, but
you can’t make school fun.”
And for years, the kids thought that’s all there was to him - until last November, when senior Pat McGoldrick
learned they didn’t know the half of him.
Pat was in charge of a student blood drive and had just come to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for a
meeting. And he says it was strange: whenever he told someone he went to St. Francis High School, they all said,
“Oh, you must know Jim Connor. Isn’t he wonderful?”
“It was disbelief, really,” Pat says. “It was almost kind of finding this alter ego (另一面) that he has.” Inside
the blood donor center, Pat found a board listing all the top blood donors, including the record holder, Jim Connor.
Then he learned something even more unbelievable: whenever Connor isn’t torturing kids with Calculus (微积分),
he’s taking care of sick babies. Three days a week for the past 20 years, Jim has volunteered to hold, feed and
comfort children.
“They tend to calm for him,” Nurse Erin says. “They tend to relax with him. They fall asleep with him.”
Connor has never been married; he has no kids of his own. But he has fallen hard for these babies.

Some researchers think there might be a connection between UFOs and angel sightings. They say the angels
and heavenly figures might actually have been extraterrestrials(外星人)。
After his experience in the 1980s with "the most beautiful thing" he ever saw, Lewis might agree with that
assessment.
It was a Saturday morning in Mariposa, California, and Lewis had to work that day. The air was fresh from a
cool rain the night before, and the morning sky was bright with a few scattered clouds.
"I was heading out to my car in the back parking lot of the apartment complex where I lived when I noticed
someone kneeling next to my car," Lewis says. "This person saw me and quickly stood up holding a crowbar(撬棍),"
The young man was quite obviously astonished by Lewis's interruption, and although Lewis sensed the boy
was up to no good, it hadn't yet hit him what he was doing. Then Lewis looked through the passenger window of his
car and saw that the steering wheel column had been stripped(脱去)of its cover. He realized that the young man was
trying to steal his car.
"I asked him what he was doing," Lewis recalls, "He gave me a lame story about his friend's car being stolen
last night and that my car looked like his friend's and so on. I didn't want to hear it. I told him I was going to call the
police, which I did on my cell phone."
Lewis dialed 911 and gave the dispatcher(调度员)the address. He told the would-be thief that the police were
