The snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening. On the way home from work, I filled up my car with gas
and picked up two pizzas because my kids, aged 10 and 15, wanted their mom to get some for dinner.
Then the snow started, and came down so fast that it screamed. It was terrifying! I didn’t know where I was. It
was now about 6 pm and dark. What would my black car look like in such a heavy snowstorm at night? Would it be
invisible? Was I on someone’s farm? Or worse, was I on the wrong side of the road? I searched my location online
and figured out that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane. It was now 6:30 pm. I posted this new information to my
Facebook community group, asking anyone who knew someone nearby to rescue me.
At 8 pm, my phone rang. It was the daughter of the farmer who owned the land beside the road where my car
was stranded. She told me that her dad was coming to get me! About 45 minutes later, I saw a tall figure in a
yellow raincoat walking toward me in the dark, carrying a flashlight (手电筒). It was André Bouvier, 80 years old,
who’d walked half a mile through the snowstorm to find me, fighting the wind and snow each step of the way.
When we reached his house a few minutes later, I got out of the car and burst into tears. All my fears disappeared
and I was grateful.
The experience let me approach challenges and surprises with a sense of calm. It reminded me to always reach
out and help others — both friends and strangers. But best of all, it brought André into my life. We’re still in touch,
and I know we'll be friends forever.
4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. Her car was out of gas. B. Her car was on someone's farm.
C. She couldn't see the road. D. She didn't expect the snowstorm.

A. Driven. B. Fixed. C. Broken. D. Stuck.
第 4页/共 12页6. How did André know the author needed help?
A. Through his community. B. Through his daughter.
C. By walking in the snow. D. By surfing the Internet.
7. What can be a suitable title for this text?
A. A Snowstorm Night Rescue B. The Most Familiar Strangers
C. The Life-saving Facebook Post D. An Encounter in the Snowstorm

On an early winter morning, a small group of students and tourists were taking pictures of the horses with their
phones. These horses, known locally as takhi and globally as Przewalski’s horse, are unique. They are the only type
that has never been trained and they are the fruits of one of the most successful ever wildlife reintroduction plans of
Hustai National Park.
“Horses are key to our culture. Everyone is glad to have them back,” says Dashpurev with a smile, who is in
charge of Hustai National Park. Once hunted to extinction in the wild in the 1960s, Przewalski’s horses now
number nearly 1,000, at three sites across Mongolia, as well as in China and Kazakhstan. The largest population —
numbering 423 — is in central Mongolia’s Hustai National Park. These horses are descendants (后代) of 84
animals that were airlifted from European zoos in the 1990s.
“Before the reintroduction, no one believed we could save this species,” recalls Dashpurev. Now, the
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has downgraded Przewalski’s horse from “critically
endangered” to “endangered”, marking a significant milestone in their recovery.
However, despite this success story, Mongolia faces numerous challenges in protecting its other species.
Besides hunting, the climate emergency is putting more pressure. Temperatures are rising three times faster than the
global average, bringing more extreme weather events that wipe out large numbers of animals.
Faced with this crisis, the government has taken actions to protect wild areas. In 1998, Mongolia promised to
protect 30% of its territory by 2030 — a goal adopted by 100 other countries in 2021. So far it is on 21%. Last
year, the president launched a drive to plant 1 billion trees by 2030 and tough fines have had success in stopping
illegal hunting.
Yet these efforts are hamstrung (妨碍) by a lack of funding. “The government wants to grow the economy.
That’s the key thing for them, so they are putting a lot of effort into agriculture and mining,” says Buuveibaatar, a
scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, “Wildlife is ignored. As a result, some of its conservation areas are
paper parks. The Przewalski’s horse reintroduction plan is an example of how to save wildlife. Now, the challenge
第 5页/共 12页lies in introducing this success to the rest of the country’s other wildlife.”
8. Why are these horses unique according to the passage?
A. They are airlifted from European zoos.
B. They are successfully introduced species.
C. They are the only true wild horse species.
D. They can only be photographed in Mongolia.
9. What was the public’s attitude towards saving these horses before the reintroduction?
A. Relieved. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Doubtful.
10. Why is the climate emergency mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the reasons for wildlife extinction.
B. To explain its influence on wildlife in Mongolia.
C. To stress the challenges facing wildlife protection.
D. To express the author’s feelings about the extinction.
11. What does Buuveibaatar imply in the last paragraph?
A. Hustai National Park provides a positive model.
B. The government’s focus should be the economy.
C. Other countries can help by following the footsteps.
D. The Przewalski’s horse is the only one worth saving.

Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in
surgery (外科手术)?
Scientists have designed this small “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body
shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams
and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was
designed by the same team.
“Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four
important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on
high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment.
“In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and
第 6页/共 12页performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving
closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by.
The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and
side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节),
which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be
lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces.
As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the
surgeries. “We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots,”
Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market
by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment.”
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Possible application fields of the robot. B. Different types of the robot.
C. Several important features of the robot. D. Working process of the robot.
13. Which of the following can best describe mCLARI?
A. Valuable but uncontrollable. B. Modern but high-cost.
C. Heavy and time-consuming. D. Advanced and effective.
14. What is Jayaram’s attitude towards the robot?
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence
B. mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market
C. CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects
D. A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries

Going back to school in September is always cool. Seeing old friends and making new friends are really
exciting.
Rebecca was an old friend of Sheila, her classmate. Sheila liked playing football, and Rebecca had the same
hobby.
There was a new girl in the classroom. Her name was Mary Brown. Unlike the others in the class, Mary was
very quiet. She always sat by herself during lunch. At playtime, she didn't ask anyone to play with her, and no one
asked her to play with them either. Rebecca was thinking about going over to talk to her, but that was when they
would be able to join a football team in the youth league. Rebecca was so busy that Mary was soon forgotten.
The teacher gave out some homework. It was a composition. Rebecca decided to write a piece about Fiona,
which is a cat, a Christmas gift from her dad. As a result, everyone liked Rebecca's composition.
At lunchtime of the third day, Rebecca was about to talk to Mary when Sheila stopped her with an angry look
towards the table where the new girl was sitting by herself. Rebecca walked away feeling so embarrassed.
She told her parents what had happened at school. Rebecca said, "I want to talk to a new friend, but I don't
want to lose my old ones." Her father thought for a moment and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage
means?" Rebecca replied, "Isn't that when our soldiers go to war to fight for us?" Her dad said, "Well, yes. That is
one kind of courage. But to do something that you are afraid to do is a different kind of courage."
Rebecca's mum reached over, holding her daughter's hand, and said, "If Sheila is really your friend, she will
understand and still be your friend. Just do what you want to do."
