“I was frightened at the start, it was -14℃ and even lower on the mountain
pass.” These were the words of Gill Punt, who had more reason to worry than other
runners in the PolarNight Marathon in Norway, since she was about to run it dressed
as a polar bear.
But the PE teacher from the UK not only finished in under five hours, she also
broke the world record for the fastest ice marathon dressed as a mammal (哺乳动
物), despite temperatures dropping to -23

With that determination, it is no wonder she has raised nearly two million
pounds for Cancer Research UK with her brave act.
Ms Punt travelled to Tromso, Norway for the challenge and completed the 26.2
miles in four hours and 58 minutes, describing the experience as “amazing”. “I could
hear Arctic wolves howling (嚎叫), pushing me to keep running, but the vision from
the head of the costume was really difficult, so I could only focus on a couple of
meters ahead,” she said.
Ms Punt has been raising funds through running events since 1999. Even by her
standards, the race was “a tricky one”, with dark, icy conditions making her realize
why others rarely attempt it wearing a costume. She said she decided to wear the
polar bear suit as it is the symbol for the cancer charity — Cancer Research UK.
She gained great fame for her costume, becoming the race’s official
representative and drawing Norwegian media attention.
“When we came out of the wilderness into small villages, there were children
holding drawings of polar bears to support me — it was mind-blowing,” she said.
She raised another £21,000 in Norway, and says she will continue until she
reaches her lifetime goal of £2,000,000. “I think there’s still one more adventure to
have,” she added.

Hidden in the Mianhua Sinkhole (天坑) of Luocheng, Hechi City, Guangxi, lies
a remarkable cliff-side (崖边) bookstore. This 326-meter-deep sinkhole, once only a
natural wonder, has now transformed into a site combining natural beauty with
cultural charm, attracting visitors from both home and abroad.
The inspiration for this bookstore came to founder He Zhijian two years ago
during a visit to a bookstore in Japan, and his ideas were later further enriched by
visiting Hangzhou’s Tsutaya Books. The result is an open-air cliff-side space filled
with over 10,000 books, creating a 10-meter-high, 150-meter-long “canyon (峡谷)
of knowledge”.
One of the bookstore’s unique features is its natural protection from the
elements: no matter how strong the wind or heavy the rain, the space never gets wet,
as the sinkhole acts as a natural shelter perfectly protecting the books and reading
area.
The construction of the bookstore is in perfect harmony with the natural
landscape, with environmental protection as a top focus. Original rock formations
have been carefully preserved. At the sinkhole bottom, except for a raised walkway
winding through wild banana plants, the area remains completely untouched,
showing great respect for nature and efforts to maintain ecological balance.
Mianhua Village, where the bookstore is located, was once cut off by mountains. A
significant change took place when this project was started. “We thought it was a
great pity that the county’s fascinating natural landscapes were hidden deep in the

decided to build a scenic spot that combines nature with culture, aiming to attract

You’re in a quiet room, trying to concentrate on your homework or a report. But
in spite of your efforts to focus, a little part of a song keeps playing in your head,
over and over again. Why does this happen?
Scientists suggest that this phenomenon, known as an ear worm, may result
from the brain’s response to the lack of music. When we desire music but can’t hear
it, our brains may generate their own melodies (旋律), resulting in an ear worm.
Studies show that songs you hear often or recently are more likely to become ear
worms. In one experiment, scientists played a new song for people either two or six

times. Over the next three days, they asked these people if the song was stuck in their
heads. The result? About one-third of them said yes. Also, people who heard the song
6 times were more likely to get ear-worms, especially the day right after they heard
it.
Once an ear-worm is in your head, it does more than just annoy—it enters a part
of our cognitive ( 认知的) architecture known as working memory. Researchers
found that if a song is stuck in people’s head, when they perform tasks designed to
test their working memory, they perform less correctly at memorizing information.
This is because the presence of an ear worm crowds out other information in
working memory. The more familiar the song is, the more it gets in the way of your
focus.
But there’s a simple way to fight ear worms: chewing gum. Why? Because ear
worms use your “inner voice”—which means using the throat to say words silently.
By using the same throat muscles while chewing gum, we may break the repeating
ear worms just enough to make them fade away. So next time a song won’t leave
