Two little boys Carl and Philip were playing one day when a Fairy (仙女)appeared and handed each of them

A year passed and the Fairy came again to the boys.
The Fairy: I have brought you new books and will take the old ones back to Father Time.
Philip: May I keep my book a little longer? I haven’t read it lately.
The Fairy: No, I must take it back.
Carl: I wish that I could look through my book just one more time. I can only read one page at a time, because
when I turn the page it sticks and I can never open the book again that day.
The Fairy: Maybe you should check your books. She lit two little candles for them. To their great surprise, on
one page there were ugly, black spots (黑点)while the very next page showed a lovely little picture. Even on the
most beautiful pages there were ugly spots too.
Carl and Philip: Who did this? Every page was as white as snow when we first opened it, but now they are full
of spots!
The Fairy: See, Philip, the roses appeared on this page when you shared your toys with the baby; and this
pretty bird would never be on here if you were not kind the other day.
Philip: But what makes these spots?
The Fairy: That came when you told a lie one day, and this when you did not listen to Mom. All these spots
that look so ugly in your books were made when you were naughty (淘气的).Each pretty thing in your books
came on its page when you were good.
Carl and Philip: Oh, I wish we could have the books again!
The Fairy: That cannot happen. They must now go back into Father Time’s bookcase, but I have brought you
each a new one. Perhaps you can make these more beautiful than the others. With these words, she disappeared, and
the boys were left alone, but each held in his hand a new book open. And on the cover of this book was written in
letters of gold, "FOR THE NEW YEAR".

Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them
good luck.
In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the
number sounds similar to.
For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune”. So, people
consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or
on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 pm
on Aug 8, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine
dragons on emperors’ robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also
stands for “long lasting”. That’s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.
So what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number
because it sounds similar to the character for “death”.
Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong,
some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also
skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in the West. As a result, a building whose highest floor
is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.
52.What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?
A.The shape of the number. B.The sound of the number.
C.The history of the number. D.The spelling of the number.
53.A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have ________ physical floors if it skips all the
unlucky numbers.
12A.35 B.44 C.50 D.60
54.If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is best?
(①=Paragraph 1 ②=Para. 2 ③=Para. 3 ④=Para. 4 ⑤=Para. 5 ⑥=Para. 6)
A.①; ②③④; ⑤⑥ B.①②; ③④⑤; ⑥
C.①②; ③④; ⑤⑥ D.①; ②③④; ⑤⑥
55.What is the story mainly about?
A.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Western culture. B.Meanings of different lucky numbers.
C.Meanings of different unlucky numbers. D.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture.
【答案】
52.B

13If you know a place really well, you might say that you know it “like the back of your hand”. How well do
you know the back of your hand, though? New research shows that we don’t know as much about our hands as we
think we do.
Wider and shorter
Professor Matthew Longo, at the University of London, tried an experiment. His team of researchers covered
the left hands of 100 people. They then asked the people to point to where they thought their fingertips and
knuckles (指关节) were. They found this very difficult.
“People think their hand is wider than it actually is,” said Longo. Fingers also seem shorter.
Sense of position
“It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo. This is our ability to tell where different parts of
our bodies are, even when we can’t see them. “It tells us whether a joint (关节) is straight or not,” he said. It also
tells us whether we are going up or down in an elevator. All this information comes from our nerves (神经). It’s like
our brains have maps for the size and shape of our bodies. “This experiment tried to find those maps,” said Longo.
Strength (强度) of feeling
____▲____ “Our brains ‘see’ areas as larger where the skin feels touch strongly,” said Longo. Body parts
don’t appear as their true size, but appear bigger or smaller depending on how strongly they feel touch. Our lips (嘴
唇), for example, have more nerves than our noses, so our “maps” show lips as being bigger than our noses.
56.What do we know about Longo’s experiment?
A.It examined left-handed people. B.People thought their hands were smaller than they actually
were.
C.People could find their knuckles. D.People thought their fingers were shorter than they actually
were.
57.What does the underlined “it” refer to?
A.The new experiment. B.The misbelief people had.
C.The size of the hand. D.The location information.
58.____▲____of the following sentences is put best into the text.
A.People draw the proper maps. B.These maps make mistakes.
C.Researchers describe the brains. D.Man touches parts of the bodies.
59.We can infer from the article that________.
A.there are more nerves in the fingers than in the toes
B.our lips have a weaker sense of touch than our nose
C.the hand feels touch more strongly than fingers do
14D.our brains can see the world better than other mammals

释我们所认为的“地图”通常是错误的,B选项“这些地图会出错”符合语境,故选B。
59.
推理判断题。根据“Body parts don’t appear as their true size, but appear bigger or smaller depending on how
strongly they feel touch”,可知,手要比手指上的神经多,因此会比手指的触感更好,故选C。

Most people think martial arts (武术) are all about kicking, punching (用拳打) and fighting. But tai chi is the
other way around. It is slow, calm (镇静的), and peaceful.
UNESCO recently added tai chi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录). Although tai
chi is an ancient martial art, it is still quite popular today. It has over 100 million fans in more than 150 countries.
People do tai chi as a way to stay fit. Unlike other exercises, it is “soft” – the muscles are not tensed (紧的),
the joints (关节) are not fully bent (弯曲的), and you don’t need to stretch (拉伸) too much. This means many can
do it. You can practice it almost anytime and anywhere, as no equipment is needed. It is believed that practicing tai
chi can help us have better control of our bodies so that we can stand, walk, and run better.
But tai chi’s advantages go to the physical. Marleni Calcina, a Peruvian (秘鲁的) woman who has practiced tai
chi for more than 10 years, says it’s not only a sport, but also a way of life. Tai chi has taught her the value of living
more slowly.
Life and work used to stress her out. But she began to feel a change, thanks to tai chi,
