“I spent my whole life doing one thing,” Gu Fangzhou once said. Known as “the father of
sugar pills (糖丸)”, Gu died at age 92 on January 2, 2019. He was also “the People’s Scientist”
for his polio (脊髓灰质炎) research.
Gu Fangzhou, a famous medical scientist, was born in June, 1926. Gu’s family faced a
difficult time with the sudden death of his father. He studied hard and finally entered Peking
University as a medical student in 1944. After graduating from university, Gu made the decision to
work to help improve public health.
In 1955, polio broke out in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. It made 1,680 people disable, mostly
children aged below seven. It spread to neighboring areas and made 466 people die. Gu was asked
to lead polio research in 1957. “At that time the only way to prevent polio was to invent a vaccine(疫苗),” said Gu.
In 1959 Gu succeeded in developing the first polio live vaccine. Later, he developed the
“sugar pill” vaccine in the early 1960s. It not only tasted better but was more affordable (买得起
的) and easier to keep. In order to test the vaccine, Gu himself tried the vaccine and later his one-
month-old son was vaccinated (接种疫苗). This encouraged his team to try the vaccine on their
kids. They became the first group of people in China to try a polio vaccine. “If we don’t believe in
what we produce, how can others believe in it?” said Gu.
Gradually, the sugar polio vaccine was made available in China. It saved millions of people,
especially kids, from being disabled. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced
that China was already a polio-free (无脊髓灰质炎) country. “We feel satisfied. I can tell people
that I tried my best, and your kids will no longer get polio,” said Gu. “That’s all we hoped for.”
48.The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.

D.what difficulties Gu Fangzhou faced while doing his research

Students will be given lessons on how to sleep in Scotland for the first time. Schools will get
materials to teach students how to get enough sleep. The teaching created by the charity Sleep
Scotland is used to be part of the school course. Its aim is to help people realize the importance of
sleep for young people’s bodies and minds. The charity said watching TV and using computers and mobile phones at night can prevent
children getting the nine hours of sleep they need. Sleep Scotland, which also offers a sleep
advising service, said getting enough sleep can improve grades and physical health. However, less
sleep can lead to be heavy and have a greater risk of feeling hopeless.
Jane Ansell, leader of Sleep Scotland, said, “I don’t think any parent would send out their child
without enough food in the morning, or beautiful clothing, and they know how important exercise
is, so why should you send your child out without enough sleep?”
The charity hopes to tell young people why they need a full night’s sleep and how to develop
good sleeping habits. Kate Pearce, a teacher of guidance, said, “We’ve studied it for more than
three years. Students often find it very difficult to get up in the morning and pay attention to their
study. Sleep is surely a problem for them.”
Research shows that sleep time for children around the world has decreased over the past
10 to 20 years. A report said young people often believed they could make up for (弥补) sleep
time by sleeping late at weekends. However, by going to bed later at weekends they were actually
forcing a change in their body clocks, and it may influence their study on Monday mornings.
52.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs in Scotland?
A.All children have nine hours of sleep.
B.Children can’t sleep well at night.
C.Schools used to have no lessons on sleep.
D.Many people feel hopeless.
53.Which of the following is true according to the charity Sleep Scotland?
A.Few children go to school with breakfast.
B.Parents think sleep is less important.
C.It’s helpful to sleep more at weekends.
D.Less sleep may make children heavy.
54.What does the underlined words “ decreased” probably mean?
A.Gone down. B.Been wasted. C.Come up. D.Been used up.
55.Which part can the passage be usually read in a newspaper?
A.Culture. B.Health. C.Sports. D.Business.
EIn order to push students to study at home as efficiently as they do in the classroom, one
school in Shijiazhuang has demanded that students should attend their online courses in their
school uniforms and that teachers should also, at the same time, give their lessons while wearing
formal clothing. As soon as this regulation was released, it caused a heated debate.
In my opinion, whether to launch this regulation or not has arguments for and against it,
depending upon one’s standpoint.
On the one hand, the practice of wearing appropriate clothing can help improve students’
sense of formality(仪式感) in their online classes, thereby making them more attentive. If all of
the students were dressed in their pyjamas(睡衣) or clothes that would not be suitable for their
classes at their schools, the quality of the lessons will perhaps decline as teenagers might easily
become absent-minded and even feel sleepy. Therefore, the act of putting on one’s uniform while
attending online classes can perhaps be quite effective as an aid and subconscious(潜意识的)
reminder that they are students.
The other viewpoint is that students’ learning is their own business. Sooner or later they
should be tasked with the responsibility of their own self-control. Therefore, taking online courses
at home is the best opportunity for them to develop their ability of independent learning and good
learning habits. The effect that online classes may have on students depends entirely on their own
self-discipline(自律), so the argument about what kind of clothes they are dressed in shouldn't
really be relevant.
To sum up, when we are studying from home on computers, it is both our sense of self-
control and our sense of formality that can improve our studies. So it’s a matter of personal
preference: You can wear a school uniform if it is of use to your own sense of learning and
discipline, otherwise you shouldn't be required to show a fake or unwilling respect for your
teachers and school by being forced to wear a uniform.
56.Why are students required to wear school uniforms while attending online classes at home?
A.To show respect for teachers. B.To push students to study efficiently.
C.To ensure students’ learning progress. D.To show the formality of school.
57.Which of the following is the reason why people support wearing school uniforms?
A.Students don’t have appropriate clothing besides pyjamas. B.If students wear casual
clothes in class, teachers can’t ensure the quality of lessons.C.School uniforms can subconsciously remind students to study effectively. D.Online classes
will make students absent-minded and even feel sleepy.
58.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of self-discipline. B.The comparison between school uniforms
and casual clothes.
C.The argument about what kind of clothes students should wear. D.The reason why
students don’t have to wear school uniforms at home.
59.What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A.The author supports students to wear school uniforms while attending online courses.
B.The author thinks it unnecessary for students to wear school uniforms at home.
C.The author thinks it up to students whether to wear school uniforms at home.
D.The author insists on forcing students to wear uniforms.

On December 26th, 2020, China passed a new law to protect the Yangtze River, the “mother
river” of China. It is Yangtze River Protection Law. It took effect(生效)on March 1st, 2021. It's
the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The 6,397-kilometer Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia. It covers an area of about 1.8
million square kilometers, about one fifth of the national total. The Yangtze River provides one
third of the country's freshwater resources(淡水资源), but it has met lots of environmental
problems in recent years, such as heavy pollution and overfishing. Especially, the river's Chinese
paddlefish(白鲟)has died out. So the “mother river” is in great need of protection. To solve
these problems, China put a 10-year fishing ban(禁令)at the beginning of this year to protect
fish resources.
According to a report of the government, the fishermen said they would give up fishing along
the Yangtze River to protect the “mother river”. Chinese officer Han Zheng said that more support
should be given to the fishermen to help them find new jobs and places to live.
Yangtze River Protection Law includes resource protection and green development. The
government says the purpose of the new law is to strengthen(加强)environmental protection,
use resources well and make the development sustainable(可持续的).

entertainment (娱乐), but not the first choice for education. In fact, music education is necessary
and important for all the __76__.
Music reflects people's thoughts and values as well as the social environment. For example,
just as Mozart music represents a lifestyle, rock music represents a lifestyle, too. The jazz
influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is American
because it __77__ from American musical traditions.
Music provides a kind of ability to know the world in a different __78__. Science explains
__79__ the sun rises and sets. Music explores the emotive (情感的) meanings. We need every
possible way to discover and response (回应) to our world because no one way can get it all.
It is a way that we human beings “talk” to each other. Through the language, we express
__80__ feelings, discoveries, ideas, imaginations and hopes so that they can be shared with others.
When we do not let our children receive good music education, we take them away from the

So music education is __81__ necessary than people generally realize. So it is important for
