The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an
overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This
anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concern over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a
celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the regional Red Cross Youth Council.
As the vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my
passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I
broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured
out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began.
“Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with
deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be
less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that is
wrapped around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.
Though my routine remains the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective has been
forever changed. The fear of failure loses its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid, for I
know that if I missed, I would land right in my mother’s arms.
24. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 2 mean?

C. The relief of the author’s stress. D. The author’s devotion to schoolwork.
26. What does the use of the “rubber band” try to illustrate?
A. A conflict with her father about goals.
B. A bond between the author and her mother.
C. A link to the author’s academic performance.
D. A shift in the author’s perspective on pressure.
27. What does the author mean by saying “reaching for the moon”?
A. She will be unbeatable. B. She has achieved all her goals.
C. She will continue to aim high. D. She has a passion for astronomy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied to help save the UK’s endangered red squirrels (松鼠). The
groundbreaking technology, known as Squirrel Agent, has been trained to spot the difference between red and grey
squirrels in order to manage feeders meant for red squirrels and ultimately, control populations.
The UK’s only native squirrel species, reds have been under threat since the introduction of greys from North
America in the late 19th century. Today, greys are thought to number some 2.7 million versus only a few hundred
thousand reds. This is largely because greys are bigger, outcompeting reds for food and territory, and carry
squirrelpox, a disease deadly to reds. Collectively, these pressures have pushed red squirrels to the edge of
extinction.
Squirrel Agent, which claims a 97 per cent accuracy rate, recognises reds by their size, shape and weight, and
features such as tails, faces and ears. Feeders are then remotely opened for reds or, for greys, kept closed, instead
opening traps or encouraging them to consume pills aimed at birth control.
“It’s a real showcase of what AI can do — it’s working in real time to do a task that we don’t have enough
human volunteers for,” says Emma McClenaghan, co-founder of Genysys Engine, which developed the system.
Project Red Haven, as the programme is known, is being tested by five wildlife charities, including the
Scottish Wildlife Trust and Ulster Wildlife. But this is just the beginning. It’s hoped that the tool’s tech will evolve
(逐步发展) sufficiently to not only identify different species, but also individuals.
“Whiskers (须) are like human fingerprints,” says McClenaghan. By distinguishing squirrels through their
whiskers, AI will build data over time to help conservationists track family lines.
28. What is the function of the second paragraph?A. To give a specific example. B. To tell of red squirrels’ extinction.
C. To provide background context. D. To clarify the species of squirrels.
29. How does Squirrel Agent respond to a grey squirrel approaching a feeder?
A. It releases birth control medicine first.
B. It shuts the feeder and may activate a trap.
C. It keeps the grey away from the feeder.
D. It sends an alarm to the human volunteers.
30. What do we know about Project Red Haven?
A. It has been fully applied by wildlife charities.
B. It was created by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
C. It can accurately identify individual animals.
D. It is likely to have a more promising future.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Tech “Squirrel Agent” Can Target Greys at Feeders
B. AI Controls Grey Squirrels by Spreading Squirrelpox
C. Wildlife Charities Test New Feeder Designs for Squirrels
D. How Grey Squirrels Outcompete Red Squirrels
D
“Red tourism”, a new form of travel where people visit important historical sites and monuments (纪念碑). It
has improved the development of the tourism industry in summer. And red tourism becomes more popular during
the National Day Golden Week holiday.
Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism
sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo,
a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform, increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.
Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and enjoying the wonderful sights. It is also
about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the
founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 and worked for the happiness of the Chinese people. By rediscovering
history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution (革命) and its heroes to the next generations, people
can lift their spirits.
Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural areas because most of the red tourism sites arein the countryside. It can raise the incomes of local people. Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase
farmers’ incomes, it contributes to local economic development.
Data show that this year, there are about 2 billion tourists visiting red tourism sites, and its market size nearly
reaches 1 trillion. Yet red tourism faces some developmental problems, mainly because some local government
officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.
32. What can we know about red tourism?
A. It is not popular with the young. B. It is a traditional form of tourism.
C. It has brought life to tourism. D. It is about visiting beautiful scenery.
33. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To prove his idea. B. To explain the story.
C. To raise concern. D. To introduce a platform.
34. What is the advantage of red tourism for rural areas?
A. It can help improve farming equipment.
B. Local people can make more money.
C. It can offer job opportunities to visitors.
D. Local people can receive much help from society.
35. What will be mentioned in the following paragraphs?
A. More and more people will choose red tourism.
B. Many travel companies will benefit from red tourism.
C. More red tourism sites should be open to the public.
D. Some measures should be taken to solve problems.

THE WORLD OF SPEED EATING
Competitive eating — or speed eating — is exactly what its name suggests. Contestants eat as much as they
can, usually within a time limit. Eating competitions can involve various foods — pizza, pies, ice cream, chili
peppers. 36
The biggest competition
37 The event is held every Fourth of July in Brooklyn, New York. According to legend, this tradition
began over a hundred years ago. Four immigrants3 were arguing about who loved their new country the most. Finally, they worked out a way to decide. They would see who could eat the most of a famous American food —
the hot dog. James Mullen, an Irish immigrant, won by eating 13 hot dogs in 12 minutes. Nathan’s Fourth of July
tradition was born.
Eating champions
The current champion of the contest is Joey Chestnut. Chestnut, an American, also holds the world record for
hot dog eating — 74 in less than 10 minutes. 38 For many years, the Nathan’s Contest champion was
Takeru Kobayashi from Japan. He is smaller and lighter than Chestnut, and doesn’t look like an eating champion.
However, he holds many world records for eating different types of food.
39
Not everybody thinks competitive eating is a good thing. 40 Kobayashi first won the event in 2001
when he was 23 years old. So are eating competitions in bad taste? For competitive eaters, it’s a sport like any other.
As Kobayashi says, “Food fighters ... think of themselves as athletes.”
A. They also advise against any type of home training.
B. Contests are typically eight to ten minutes long.
C. The world’s largest competitive eating event is Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
D. It can be unhealthy for the contestants, and many people in the world are going hungry.
E. Bad taste or just sport?
F. They can also offer large prizes to the winners.
G. That’s just over eight seconds per hot dog.

Benjamin lost his sight during his service in the army, so he had seldom gone out. To encourage him, his
friends bought him a guide dog named Cooper. Benjamin admitted the dog made all the difference. He regained
some independence such as walking through the park.
Benjamin’s friend, Natalie, was singing in a performance at the local concert hall, which was an excellent
opportunity for her. Benjamin hadn’t expected to go, but Natalie wanted him there and mentioned some of their
friends would be present too. So he put on his nice suit, grabbed Cooper, and set out.
Benjamin reached the hall a bit late. He decided to go to his friends later and sit with his dog in the closest row
he could sense. He knew at least two people were sitting in the same row. “Oh! Who brings a dog to the nice
concert hall?” Benjamin heard a woman complain. Maybe she didn’t notice his really black glasses and didn’t
understand why he needed a dog. “Ada, he’s blind. It’s his service dog,” her husband replied.
Natalie took the stage. Although Benjamin couldn’t see her, he knew she looked beautiful. Meanwhile, the
woman named Ada continued complaining about Cooper. Benjamin was about to be angry. She had known he was
blind. Worst of all, she was interrupting his friend’s concert. Benjamin decided he would leave as soon as Nataliefinished her song. However, as the song ended, Natalie began to address the audience.
“Thank you, everyone. The next song is for one special friend in particular, Benjamin, “Natalie said, looking
in Benjamin’s direction and Benjamin could hear the emotions in her voice.” You sacrificed (牺牲) so much for our
country, and you are our hero. I do hope the next song brings you happiness and shows you the wonderful world.”
Benjamin felt tears falling from his eyes. Cooper rested its head on his knee, comforting him as Natalie belted out a
beautiful song.
