三、阅读(共20 小题;满分35 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C 和D 项中,选出最佳选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

I My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live, when we saw an old
worn-out dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the road. We stopped, bent down, talked gently to the dog
and patted it. I checked and there was a collar with a phone number. I called but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to
encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short
work of the food. Eventually we got her home.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch of
flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. She was very old and got lost that
morning. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is the truth of the story:
Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to
come back, but I wasn’t hearing anything that made that sound likely.
I was about to turn and so when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly
we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right
before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family.
In the song “Love Is Not a Fight” Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings,
“And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door. “
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six
years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a
brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would
work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look
ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been
doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to
visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint
and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first
real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was
amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to
Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a
landscape (风景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was
impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long
and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two
books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood
very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided
then that he would be an artist.
32. What is the text mainly about?

For people, who are interested in sound, the field of sound technology is definitely making noise. In
the past, sound engineers worked in the back rooms of recording studios, but many of today’s sound
professionals are sharing their knowledge and experience with professionals in other fields to create new
products based on the phenomenon (现象) we call sound.
Sound can be used as a weapon (武器). Imagine that a police officer is chasing a thief. The thief tries
to escape. And the officer can’t let him get away. He pulls out a special device, points it at the suspect (嫌
疑犯), and switches it on. The thief drops to the ground. This new weapon is called a Long Range
Acoustic Device (LRAD, 远程定向声波发射器). It produces a deafening sound so painful that it
temporarily disables a person. The noise from the LRAD is directed like a ray of light and travels only
into the ears of that person, but it is not deadly.
For those who hunger for some peace and quiet, sound can now create silence. Let’s say you are at
the airport, and the little boy on the seat next to you is humming (哼唱) a short commercial song. He
hums it over and over again, and you are about to go crazy. Thanks to the Silence Machine, a British
invention, you can get rid of the sound without upsetting the boy or his parents. One may wonder how the
Silence Machine works. Well, it functions by analyzing the waves of the incoming sound and creating a
second set of outgoing waves. The two sets of waves cancel each other out. Simply turn the machine or
point it at the target, and your peace and quiet comes back.
Directed sound is a new technology that allows companies to use sound in much the same way
spotlights (聚光灯) are used in the theater. A spotlight lights up only one section of a stage; similarly,

“spotsound” creates a circle of sound in on targeted area. This can be useful for businesses such as
restaurants and stores because it offers a new way to attract customers. Restaurants can offer a choice of
music along with the various food choices on the menu, allowing customers more control over the
atmosphere in which they are dining. Directed sound is also beginning to appear in shopping centers and
even at homes.
36. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the effect of the LRAD?
A. It causes temporary hearing loss.
B. It slows down a running man.
C. It makes it easy to identify a suspect.
D. It keeps the suspect from hurting others.
37. The Silence Machine is a device specially designed to _________.
A. silence the people around you
B. remove the sound of commercials
C. block the incoming sound waves
D. stop unwanted sound from affecting you
38. What feature do spotsounds and spotlights share?
A. They travel in circles.
B. They clear the atmosphere.
C. They can be transformed into energy.
D. They can be directed onto a specific area.
39. Directed sound can be used for _________.
A. creative designs of restaurant menus
B. ideal sound effects on the theater stage
C. different choices of music for businesses
D. strict control over any suspicious customer
40. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How professionals invented sound products.
B. Inventions in the field of sound technology.
C. The growing interest in the study of sound.
D. How sound engineers work in their studios.

____43____ This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn’t a lot of food served.
There are usually no planned activities like games at a housewarming party. The host or hostess of the

help unpack boxes. ____44____
Housewarming parties get their name from the fact that a long time ago people would actually bring
