The modern Father’s Day first appeared in the United States. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd attended a church service for Mother’s Day. She was deeply moved and thought of her father William Jackson Smart, a veteran of the American Civil War. After his wife passed away, he worked hard to bring up their six children all by himself. Dodd hoped there would be a special day to show respect and gratitude to all devoted fathers.

现代父亲节起源于美国。1909年，索诺拉·斯马特·多德参加了一场母亲节礼拜。她深受触动，想起了自己的父亲威廉·杰克逊·斯马特——一位美国南北战争老兵。妻子离世后，他独自辛劳地抚养六个孩子长大。多德希望设立一个特别的节日，向所有默默付出的父亲表达敬意与感恩。

Thanks to her continuous efforts, the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane was held on June 19, 1910. It took more than sixty years for the festival to gain national recognition. In 1972, US President Richard Nixon signed an official act, making the third Sunday in June the national Father’s Day. Gradually, this tradition spread across the globe and is now widely celebrated in dozens of countries.

在她的不断努力下，斯波坎当地的第一场父亲节庆祝活动于1910年6月19日举办。历经六十余年，这个节日才获得全国认可。1972年，美国总统理查德·尼克松签署正式法案，将每年六月的第三个星期日定为美国全国父亲节。这一传统随后逐渐走向世界，如今已有数十个国家广泛庆祝。
