Life as I know it

Creating time and space
It’s not only Al that can be revolutionary: people can be too, remembers Harriet Minter
Last week I was in France, taking 600 consultants through a change programme to help them adjust to a world dominated by AI. This wasn’t about teaching them how to use AI tools — although we had people who did that. Or helping them understand the impact that AI would have on their industry — although we did that too.
What this was really about was helping them understand how they could look after themselves, their teams and their business as so much change unfolded around them.
The irony here is that I am no AI evangelist. Even when I use it myself it brings up so many questions for me. Am I doing the right thing? What is the impact of this? What will it do for creatives and the way we express ourselves?
The reality of AI in our world right now is that it’s forcing us to sit in uncertainty, to accept that we really have no idea what the future will hold because it could change at any minute. And that’s terrifying.
But the biggest question of the whole week was: Could participants put aside their personal views and preferences to make space for others
to explore theirs? We had some people in the room who were AI evangelists, and some people who’d never touched it: we wanted both to be able to learn from each other, rather than just pushing their own viewpoint. No small ask when you have 600 people who all think their opinion is the right one!
In moments of change, it’s easy to resort to command and control leadership, to issue orders and be done with it. Instead, what we set out to do was to create a feeling of slowing down, of it being okay to be vulnerable. We wanted everyone to remember their own humanity first, before diving into the tech of it all. Most of all, we wanted them to listen to each other.
But sitting and hearing views that don’t match your own — and holding that they still have merit and deserve to be heard — is hard.
It brings up our fear that we might lose, or be ignored. We knew it would be a challenge to hold that space for so many people, and yet, we achieved it! I saw people come together and really take the time to listen and understand each other’s viewpoint. I saw the trust that was built and the connections that were created. Making space for this is hard, but the payoff was so worth it. If only we could do that every day.
