English Version

The story of bike-sharing begins with Dutch activists who devised the Witte Fietsenplan in 1965 to counter the perceivedthreats of air pollution and consumerism. They distributed white bikes and leaflets, but the police quickly removed them. Years later, engineer Luud Schimmelpennink proposed a more elaborate plan to the municipality, but the council unanimously rejected it. Undeterred, he helped Copenhagen set up a deposit-based system. When he returned to Amsterdam, people had grown more environmentally conscious, so a new plan launched with conspicuous, sturdy bikes. Yet the system was prone tovandalism and theft, and the bank decided to abolish the payment card, which was pivotal. Characteristically, Schimmelpennink bounced back, helping Paris launch its hugely successful scheme. He never filed for a patent, so he earned little money. But he remains optimistic, believing that cities will no longer be dominated by cars.
