As AI use grows rapidly, the internet is full of opinions and reports saying that many software development jobs will be cut. These include rumours of large tech companies making big job cuts, as well as real stories from software workers who have lost their jobs.
These stories make software workers feel worried. However, the reality may be different. According to online graduate job statistics published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in September, between September last year and August this year, software development roles rose by 23.3%. Positions in business analysis, architecture and design increased sharply by 53.7%. By comparison, basic data analysis jobs grew by only 6.4%. Among the 13 job roles in the study, accounting-related roles were the only ones to fall, dropping by 13.4%.
One interesting point from the report’s explanation: the study counts online job advertisements, not unique job vacancies. This means the same role advertised by one organisation can be counted more than once. A rise in these numbers does not guarantee an absolute increase in real jobs. Still, if employers post the same job on many platforms, it may show that these workers are hard to find.
Although the data does not directly show the real growth in the number of jobs, it shows the software job market is not what many people fear: it is not true that all software workers will lose their jobs.
If we look at hiring trends for all software-related roles, the industry is starting to use AI coding tools for basic programming work. Humans keep the higher-level tasks, such as system design and business analysis. From this, we can see the near future of the software industry: it needs more people who understand business, see the big picture and know system design.
This statistical report only shows part of the industry situation, but it certainly gives some hope to people planning to enter the field and software professionals with many years of experience.
