Part2

Describe a festival from another country that you like

-I’d like to talk about Halloween, which falls on October 31st.

It originated from old Celtic traditions. Nowadays, it is more like a fun celebration rather than a serious ritual. People carve pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns and kids put on creative costumes to go trick-or-treating.

-I like it because it is a good chance for people to relax and be creative. It also helps me understand western culture better. However, I think every culture has its unique festivals, and we should respect cultural differences.

Part3 拓展问答

1. Do you think Halloween is popular in your country?

Halloween is getting more and more popular here, especially among young people like college students. It's not an official holiday— shops and malls just use it for promotion, and young people treat it as a fun social event, like costume parties or themed get-togethers. Personally, I'd say it's more of a commercial and entertainment thing than a real cultural celebration.

2. Why do people celebrate traditional festivals?

I think there are several reasons. First, festivals keep traditions alive— they carry stories, customs and values that have been passed down for generations. Second, they strengthen family bonds, because people get together, share meals and catch up with relatives they rarely see. And on a deeper level, festivals give people a sense of identity and belonging, reminding us where we come from.

3. Do you agree that western festivals take attention away from our own festivals?

Not really. I believe we can enjoy foreign festivals without neglecting our own culture. In fact, most people celebrate Halloween or Christmas just for fun— it doesn't mean they care less about Spring Festival or Mid-Autumn Day. If anything, it's a form of cross-cultural communication: we get to learn about other cultures, and at the same time, our own traditions spread overseas as well, like how Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world now.
